"This is one major strength of the buy/eat local campaigns, but that's only a small start."

_____________________________

Thank you for that input.

But just to relate to you some recent experience we've had here lately about the value of small starts ...

When I lived in Charlotte and went to the local farmer's market to shop among the several organic growers there, they started telling me about this company called Monsanto that were trying to push through this legislation that would outlaw what they (organic growers) were doing. I initially thought it was just paranoia on their part.

Lo and behold, 5 years later our congress were attempting to impose this very thing. But for the efforts of a few congresspeople to take that part of the new 'food safety' law out of the deal we would not have anything but genetically altered vegetables on our table right now.

I looked all this up as it was going on, and the huge pile of letters from the Carolina Farm Stewardship seems to have had something to do with the last-call turn of events in congress. These people whose hands I put my money into every Saturday in exchange for heirloom tomatoes and about 7 different varieties of deep dark lettuce (none of them iceberg, thank you so much) used some of this same money to fight the battle.

A rare event, I'm certain, but that absolutely got the 'buy local' thing into my head even more solidly than before.

I have no idea what small things I am doing will ever make it to anything of significance, but then I just went shopping at the farmer's market and look what happened.

In many places the elderly and other vulnerable people are much safer in private vehicles

They don't have public transport around here. If you live in Detroit, they have a bus system, but it doesn't help the suburbs at all and according to the people who use the city bus, it really sucks.

Not trying(this time) to be snarky...but are you suggesting that we simply concede that fact.To acquiesce to that fact.Surely it is the requirement of any society that holds itself to be advanced that everything in that societies power to make them safe is done so?

Edwynn -> RE: Gas prices have spiked! May soon past record highs! $4-$5 gas coming (4/16/2011 10:29:02 AM)

Here is what 'could' (maybe, might  ... etc.) happen from higher gas prices Marini.

Keep in mind, the local price certainly differs, but the world price per barrel is set by worldwide demand. China and India and other less populated emerging economies are going to be with is for awhile yet.

But what else might happen?

As we say, the price goes up or down for everybody, whatever the local price. China is dealing with their own growth, which is currently affecting them as regards commodity prices of all sorts, not just oil. They are also trying to deal with local inflation and some bit of really super hot property prices. Guess how long that yuan pegging to the US dollar is going to last? There is no way that they can keep that up for much longer.

What else happens?

The cost of transportation goes up, which would affect the import/export situation. We know that the US is the largest importer, but we are the third largest exporter too, so that could bite us both ways. But look at our partners in this, Marini, and you'll see that the US and Canada are each others' largest trading partner, even above China, and Mexico we buy a bunch and sell a bunch to also. (yes folks, other countries buy US made goods and services by ship loads, look at that "third largest exporter" thing again).

What is the cost of shipping imports from Canada Or Mexico vs. shipping from China? just to narrow it to imports for the moment. China is the one jumping out of their pants on this one, Marini. Join me in a glass of tea and let's watch the show.

Another thing that will happen eventually is that energy reduction efforts will become more economically relevant.

That's right. "Energy reduction," "efficiency," things like that. Notice that the "we need more!" response is about the stupidest response to a price increase of something that one is hooked on.

In the short term, people are not going to change things overnight, the higher gas prices will attract even more engineers away from other tasks, and people will try to get more money to buy the same stupid way-overweight vehicles or they will blame it on the president if they can't.

But eventually ... at least some of those engineers will find better jobs with solar or wind turbine or battery companies, or better process engineering for a bunch of things, reducing energy costs, etc.

So then, Chinese imports will be more expensive, which will make both US and Malaysian goods more competitive (yes, that's right folks; eliminate Chinese imports and welcome the next cheaper one).

And then there's that less pollution from less usage thing too.

I wish that all these good things could just 'Boom!' into our presence in lock step with the rising gas prices, but there might actually be some bit of lag there.

There have been a a lot of things affecting our economy quite badly lately, but none of them have the 'good excuse' that gas price does, nor such promise for future rewards.

Many, if not most, have no access to private vehicles. Public transportation is their only option.

I've seen reports where that's getting a lot more expensive, since a lot of fast food joints are able to get good money for their grease instead of giving it away.

It's beyond that. The gangsters who run that business got the state assembly to pass a law that requires all food vendors who purchase cooking oil to account for how they dispose of it...there are only two "authorized" corporations in california who are "certified" by the state to "collect, transport and dispose" of wvo (waste vegitable oil). So in this state,at least, restaurants are not a legal source for wvo... one must be inovative and go farther afield to find untapped sources ...yes I am and yes I have.

Vegetable oil??? I'd accuse you of making a joke, but somehow that's too crazy not to be true.

WTF? What's their putative rationale?

There are ways to convert cars to run on vegetable oil.

Perhaps monopolizing the supply?

tazzygirl -> RE: Gas prices have spiked! May soon past record highs! $4-$5 gas coming (4/16/2011 11:09:15 PM)

More like ensuring their supply, and cutting out any attempts at achieving a supply thats cheaper.

Marini -> RE: Gas prices have spiked! May soon past record highs! $4-$5 gas coming (4/16/2011 11:58:40 PM)

I bought groceries and gas this evening.

I am not sure how many people are going to make it.

You will need a second job soon, to buy groceries and gas.

Thanks for posting, HippieKinster, I thought most Europeans didn't have to drive or depend on their cars in general, as much as we do in the states.

But what exists in Europe is a far cry from what exists in the UK in the more outlying areas. My city for example, where I have been without personal transport for three years and have now in despair gone back to personal transport and it's costs as public transport actually hinders freedom in some places, timetables that are not adhered to, services which are haphazard and the rising cost of fayre which is quite often, simply not fair for many. I purchased my own vehicle because I need to go to work, to a place not covered by public transport, well, I tell a lie, one bus a day and three buses to get to that bus, which amounts to a significant cost and about three hours to get to work less than ten miles away. I would have cycled the distance, but that road claimed it's fourth cyclist this year recently, death due to cars drivers that don't care on a fast major road through the countryside.

As to travelling long distance, my record time for commuting was two and a half hours by car each morning and the same in the evening, basically almost from one side of the country to the other through the nature of the job.

But myself these past three years as unemployed, I have realised reliance on public transport is actually a hindrance to finding work, as even prospective employers are now asking if an applicant has their own motorised transport, and around here with what qualifies as public transport, I don't blame them, for employers need employees to be reliable.

But that is what the politicians in this country just do not get regards the unemployed, the status of public transport anywhere other than the capital, for in their misguided policies, they are pushing a lot of people up against a wall, as what jobs lie in outlying areas simply cannot be got to on a regular basis due to the shite excuse for public transport, which is not so much of a service since the deregulation ideas to create a better market, for all that has done is create monopolies where the modus operandi is profit, certainly not service by a long way.

But gas is expensive here despite the blood that is being spilled for it, but most of our cost is taxation by government, they increase it all the time, and we just accept it, for I believe the fight has gone out of Britain, we are too divided to stand together in a common aim, so that being, the government, any government for they are all the same have won, they own us, we are their cash cows.

Oh, and I drive an economy engined Renault 1.4 litre and even with that, I use a vacuum gauge to make sure I am burning the fuel wisely, the needle must stay in the green as much as possible.

Does that show you you are burning fuel efficiently??

Marini -> RE: Gas prices have spiked! May soon past record highs! $4-$5 gas coming (4/18/2011 10:00:18 PM)

A few isolated gas stations now selling gas for $5 a gallon.

It is now a reality.

$5 a gallon gas hits CA!

Real0ne -> RE: Gas prices have spiked! May soon past record highs! $4-$5 gas coming (4/18/2011 11:58:18 PM)

so another 30% inflation is cast in concrete and here to stay LOL

sounds like the value of a dollar is now well under 1 cent.

go go america!

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Gas prices have spiked! May soon past record highs! $4-$5 gas coming (4/19/2011 3:55:15 AM)

From the little travel I have done in the UK, Aneirin's right. Service is rural areas is sparse or non-existent. On the continent, however, particulary Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Spain, the public trans infracture is well-developed and very easy to use.

One benefit that is rarely mentioned is the ability to interact with others. I often take advantage of this when I travle, particularly in foreign countries.
