I learned programming on a monster who lived in its own climate controlled room. The disk drive was about the size of a bicycle tire & if you didn't do the proper shutdown procedure you could have a disc crash that would wipe everything out. It was kinda touchy! We used punch cards & collated them into the proper sequence, put them in a cardboard box & carried them to the monster to feed them through the card reader. I wrote one program whose cards, including data cards, numbered in the hundreds. I was walking carefully toward the monster with these cards all in their proper sequence when I tripped over the pattern on the linoleum & the cards went flying! I started laughing hysterically. My fellow students gave me a wide berth after that.

I couldn't think of a good reason to have a home computer until about 1995 or so. It was a 386 custom built for me by a geek friend. GAWD! I'm old!!!

Back in the day....when we had to run on a hamster wheel to boot the computer.....

The latest and greatest hard drives cost $189.00.  Didn't matter about the size, the first 10 Mb ones were $189.00.  Kinda like how a decent electric piano stays around $1100, but the features keep improving.

Remember when you had to "park" the hard drive before you turned the computer off?  8" floppy drives?

Fast Reply.....

Grad school 1986.....it was an Apple IIc 128K "portable" computer. The CPU had a handle that made it portable, but the little square monitor with the green on green screen sat on a metal stand and the two weighed about 15 lbs. The system came with Appleworks software and was a *bargain* from 47th Street Photo at $1200.

my favourite computer joke
what is the difference between a computer and a woman
a computer wont complain about a three and a half inch floppy
(they had just changed to the 3 1/2s)

Seriously, I didn't get immediately on the computer bandwagon. I do still have the big box monitor though, and am keeping it, until it kills over. M
