GB and FF, trust me, I've thrown out a few projects over the years. You have to experiment a bit. As far as affording stuff, that's one of the main reasons I started making my own. You'd be amazed what you can make out of 1" webbing strap, and it sells for $0.19 a foot at my local hardware store. The hammered rivets were around $5-6 for 100 pieces (50 sets) and the setting tool was about $4 (I use a 2lb ball peen hammer with it, use what you got). I saw something similar to that "cross clip" out of leather for around $85, that piece cost about $16, and I'm sure I could have got the clips online cheaper. Now, when I can afford a nice MIG/TIG welder and some classes, THEN we'll get into the truly diabolical stuff. I've always wanted to build a rotisserie rack......
