The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution to bar all federal funding to Planned Parenthood on Thursday, but the Senate rejected the proposal a few hours later by a vote of 58 to 42. Five Republican senators -- Massachussetts' Scott Brown, Alaska's Lisa Murkowski, Illinois' Mark Kirk, and Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both from Maine -- voted against the resolution, which was a “technical correction” to the budget bill that passed last week without the Planned Parenthood rider. Ten House Democrats voted in favor of the resolution, which passed the House by a vote of 241 to 185. “It’s clear that Republicans do not support family planning. It’s hard to understand, but it’s clear that they don’t, and have used debate on this bill to spread misinformation about the critical work that Planned Parenthood does on behalf of America’s women every day,” Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.) said on the House floor. “Today’s legislation, which has no chance of passing the Senate and becoming law, thank God, is just part of the Republican agenda that is the most comprehensive and radical assault on women’s health and reproductive freedom in our lifetime, and that’s saying something.” Watch full video of Pelosi’s speech here:

Edited to add, apowerful vote for allwomen in the US< congrats

My doctorate supervisor did her PhD on abortion. She told me that, for Catholics, abortion wasn't pronounced a sin until the beginning of the 19th century. Even then it was only considered a sin for the person performing the abortion, not the woman.

She also told me that women who had abortions were added to the sinners' lists about 50 years later. But this was so widely ignored that it had to be re-stated by the Church many times before the message got through. I really don't know if other Christian denominations share the Catholic Church's history on abortion or not.

The Church's position on abortion is that it's contrary to (the Church's version of so-called) 'Natural Law'. It's odd to me that it took 19 centuries to discover a bit of theology that was (supposedly) there all along. That doesn't suggest 'natural' to me.

It's also interesting to reflect that the deep emotion and anger that many Catholics feel about abortion is a relatively new phenomenon. 200 years ago, their attitude could well have been: 'So what? It's not forbidden. It's not a sin'. I'm not suggesting that their feelings are insincere. However, looking at it from a historical perspective, it's impossible for me not to wonder whether their feelings on this issue are being manipulated, whether the anger is confected to a significant extent.

Lucy, why are they declaring this anti-abortion, war on women at this time?

It's crazy, this nation is falling apart, and they want to declare war
on a womans right to decide what she wants to do with her own body?

We don't even want to provide assistance or medical care to the people that are already here!

tazzygirl -> RE: Planned Parenthood not getting cut (4/14/2011 9:57:54 PM)

That settles it. We can reopen the back street abortion clinics. See, they have it all worked out! [8|]

Lucylastic -> RE: Planned Parenthood not getting cut (4/14/2011 10:15:04 PM)

I can only answer that as an outside Mari, it is just my opinion and how I see it. I am heavy believer in womens rights over their own bodies,
given that, I believe the religious right for many reasons have become more organized politically.
I know its been political since RvW but I think they believe that altho they know they cant  get abortion made illegal ,  they are trying and almost succeeding in making it as difficult as possible for anyone to get abortions or even advice.
Many want to go back to victorian morals, and regain some control over people, and reduce womens rights way back to when men and the church ruled (because they had it pretty cushy the way things were).
Because women are freeer now to do basically whatever they choose, there is a lot of jealousy and anger towards "uppity women" actually uppity people in general :)
Ive had more than a few  cmails telling me much the same, some in very ignorant nasty threatening detail, which of course only makes me more determined to be an anti right wing. I will never be a female supremacist, or anti men, but I will always be against taking womens rights over their own bodies away from them.
Also I think its to do with the fact that they dont like civil rights in general.
Just my two cents

Great post!
I hope you haven't received hate mail from peeps on CM.
That would be just sad.
Here it is 2011, with everything that is facing the United States AND the entire world, why do the anti-abortion zealots feel now is the time they can attempt to pull stunts like this?
At the end of the day, they may score a few small victories, but they will not prevail nor win!!!
We have come a long way, baby!
We ain't going backwards!

Why the heck, can't they put that time, energy and money into feeding all the um's that are here and are hungry, homeless, or in dire straits?

Lucylastic -> RE: Planned Parenthood not getting cut (4/14/2011 10:47:08 PM)

Amen to that my friend

Because fetuses are innocent and in need of protection but babies and children aren't, apparently. Must have something to do with all that sin they pick up going down the birth canal. [8|]

Yet another thing they blame women for
Sin

This is what happens when you invite the camel to put it's nose in the tent.Ronald Reagan invited the religious right to take a seat on the bus....and now they insist on driving that bus.Re-igniting long settled issues to be re-fought and leading the Republican Party to a fractious amalgamation of special interests(hello tea baggers, please take a seat to the right of the religious whacks) ...so much for a once Grand Old Party.

Well thank the goddess she told me that before I donated any more money to them. I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to be supporting that one.

yes, as a matter of fact I do. I guess this means I should go kick a dog or something. Maybe I will get a chance when I get to the park. First I will have to make sure dads stocked up on cat food and then I am off to walk in the woods. Have a great day.

slvemike4u -> RE: Planned Parenthood not getting cut (4/15/2011 8:53:08 AM)

Know what boi, you read an awful lot into one sentence. Instead of believing you know what I am thinking, try asking.

I have never accused anyone of kicking a dog or starving granny.

Try chilling out and relaxing. If I had wanted to attack you, I would have done it already.

Lucylastic -> RE: Planned Parenthood not getting cut (4/15/2011 12:39:01 PM)

As she was talking about the republican party in the house at the time, ill remove that stick from your ass slowly Boi, and rub in some lotion ok?

It was a joke. Take your own advice and chill a bit.

Boi, you are rarely one to take a joke, let alone make one.
