Termyn8or -> I need a hobby (4/14/2011 10:42:14 PM)

I think I have too much time on my hands. Too much internet, too much "lay around the shanty mama and put a good buzz on"*. Too much of whatever I'm doing.

I'd like to do something productive in some way. It would be nice to be able to sell something once in a while, but not a completely for profit hobby. That's called work. While I am only working a couple of days a week right now, it's not my idea to start a business or something like that. Even if I did that, I still need somethng else I WANT to do. IT can't cost alot of money but it doesn't necessarily have to make money.

I simply am not the artsy craftsy type. The only thing I can draw half decently is a mechanical or electrical diagram. Music no longer holds my interest enough. Electronics has lost it's luster for me, plus building anything I would want to build would be too expensive.

I like remodeling, but if I do it for myself I got time into it plus materials. If I do it for someone else I have to do it how they want it done - that means it is work. I mean something that is specifically not work. It can bring some money but that is not the goal.

Got any ideas ?

* if you haven't heard that one I can probably find it. This can occur when one is not born between the years of 1957 and 1970.

How about crocheting? You could then either sell the blankets or donate to aids babies. Yarn isn't much money and it keeps your hands busy.

Termyn8or -> RE: I need a hobby (4/14/2011 11:45:46 PM)

My sinister tried to show me how to do that. I just didn't get it. It would be cool though, make my own patterns on stuff, like pot leaves, burning statues of Liberties, dead people, any symbol like the triad or who the heck knows ?

But I was basically a waste of yarn. :-)

Underground cage fight network.

Hmmm, a network sounds expensive. Can I get some volunteers to dig ? You in ?

Oh that's too bad. Crocheting helps fill some of my empty time. Good luck in finding your "thing".

MissImmortalPain -> RE: I need a hobby (4/15/2011 3:17:04 AM)

Quilting is a fun way to work your own patterns into a creative hobby. Though personaly I have never found anything that allows me to express myself as well as working with stained glass.

Cherylmazana -> RE: I need a hobby (4/15/2011 3:34:36 AM)

Over the years I have tried many types of craft based hobbies, the two that come to mind that can be used for profit is glass painting and the donna dewberry one stroke type of folk art flower painting. Both require very little outlay cost wise and are easy to learn.

I turned my daughter’s bedroom into a fairy bower with swags of flowers trees and woodland creatures using this method, with more time on my hands I could have made money from doing similar things for others, or just decorated pots etc to sell.

Cross stitch or black work is another easy one though more good for personal use with the added benefit that it can be as big or small as you wish, and can be used to make cards to impress family, or cushions and pictures for your own home. Kits are readily available and small started kits are often on the front of cross stitch mags so you can see if you enjoy it.

Rag rugs made out of hessian and old tee shirts can again be both sold or kept for your own use.

Quilting and patchwork can be fun and doesn’t have to be huge bed coverings either, again start small with a cushion cover.

Making cards is hit and miss for profit though if you buy decoupage kits you need to have no sense of style or craft ability other than be able to cut out well. Again it fills hours and keeps your hands busy.

calamitysandra -> RE: I need a hobby (4/15/2011 5:37:30 AM)

I would go with gardening, too. You like to talk about healthy food, so how about growing your own produce?

Remember, even Jonathan Edwards found life outside of lazin' and buzzin'! [;)]

I'm going to echo the others who suggest gardening. Sounds to me like you would benefit from digging in the dirt and reconnecting with Mama Nature.

pahunkboy -> RE: I need a hobby (4/15/2011 6:28:21 AM)

Start your own brewery.

Uh oh-  maybe that is a bad idea.  LOL

ResidentSadist -> RE: I need a hobby (4/15/2011 9:48:26 AM)

Take up Jarts while jumping on a trampoline.  That should put the fear of god into the neighbor's dog.

Oh believe me, sometimes it changes....I was very impatient to knit in my teens and now am fine with it...so add knitting to crocheting [:)]

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: I need a hobby (4/15/2011 4:32:13 PM)

I concur with RS. That sounds like the most fun & productive hobby suggested so far!!

I can provide strippers.

They might be a little stupid but that's because they're Quebecois.

strangedesire -> RE: I need a hobby (4/15/2011 4:45:26 PM)

I'm teaching myself to plait nylon whips. It takes practice and patience, but isn't actually as hard as you might think.

Plus, paracord is pretty cheap.

Termyn8or -> RE: I need a hobby (4/16/2011 5:16:26 PM)

Whips ? Hmmmm, I have thought about making bondage equipment in the past.

You are a jack of all trades.

Open a pet first aid center.  You could do diagnostics holistic for cats and dogs.

Or- why not grow your own tobacco?    you could then barter it for bear.

...or-  scrap metal is big right now- up in price-  run an ad-  to help clean out your neighbors basements.

or teach yourself to do tattoos-  they sell the stuff on ebay....

Hobby:
Look at your life.
Find the thing you enjoy.
Do that.
