Status: offline 		Considering that during the first days the amount of people comming into contact with the newborn is not that huge to begin with, I never had a problem with friends an family holding them. Providing of course, that nobody was ill.

Status: offline 		I let Bo and Mom hold Lizard when she came down to Austin. 3 weeks later, I got on the bus and went up to Mom and Dad's to showed her off to more friends.  I was out of formula and had to breastfeed Lizard on the bus (she was doing both until the 5th week and successively switch to formula on week 6).

Status: offline 		I've been in groups where we regularly play pass the baby. As long as people know how to hold an infant, I think it tends to be a good idea.

Hypothesis: the immune system, like other human systems needs to be exercised to develop properly. Hence, expose the kid to more germs- it'll strengthen the immune system.

The idea of killing germs seems to be having the opposite effect- it may be making our immune systems weaker as witness the rise of illnesses such as asthma and severe allergic reactions. Since the only thing driving the idea was marketing, this may yet be another example of unintended consequences.

Status: offline 		i agree with samboct, though care should be taken because some illnesses can kill a tiny tot, rather than safely test and build up the immune system.

Status: offline 		I'm from an older generation that said you never take the newborn out and pass it around until it is at least 2 weeks old. Then basic precautions like hand washing and no sniffles still apply.

A breast fed baby will have its mother's immune system for about 6 months, then it develops its own.

I changed my mind.........."everyone" is not specific enough. Do you "everyone" that asks, including stranger? If so then my answer is "HELL NO"!  If family & close friends want to hold the baby then my above post applies.
Don't feel obligated just because an "acquaintance" wants to hol a newborn. WhomeverYOU are comfortable holding the baby should do so.

Status: offline 		Don't, but not because of germs.  Newborns need to be bundled close to mama for the first few weeks at least, preferably right against her skin in a baby carrier as much as possible.  It's good for their breathing, growth, eating and sleeping habits, and early neurological development.  And no baby younger than about a month should be taken to a high stress, high stimulation area like the mall.

Status: offline 		Folks do need to make sure that they don't have whooping cough.  Most adults can have it and it will not affect them, but if they have it, no toughing the baby because the shot for that disease is not given unless you ask the doctor to go ahead and give the baby the shot for protection.

My nephews lady had a baby the other day.   And already  various people all holding him- pics on facebook-   maybe it just seems like it is more - being that there are pictures.

The baby is less then a week old.

Status: offline 		I remember right after birth, Bo came over to see Lizard.  He brought what I requested...a dozen of rolls from Grandy's.  He caught me walking about 2 hours after I delivered Lizard.  Usually most women stay in bed...I was walking and see her in the nursery.

The next morning, Bo came back to pick her up.  My friend Sandy (just died, I loved her) came over and did asked for permission to pick her up.  I told her it was okay.

Personally, the baby will get shots on the 2nd week and 4th week, according to Texas law.

Its is mainly what the parents want to do.  Yes, there are families who don't want anyone touching their child and there will be some who want the familial touch.

Status: offline 		when mine was born everyone and their mother held her. I was a military wife and we had tons and tons of the military community around us....friends, family, their spouses and their kids, our families, etc...she was/is perfectly healthy.

Status: offline 		I recall when Butterhead was born and after we (finally) were able to bring her home, some friends came by. My friend was holding her and the larger of the labs kept looking at her and then into the bassinet. He had this look on his face of, "That little thing belongs in there!" It was rather amusing.

But no, I had no problem letting others hold her.

Status: offline 		My oldest couldn't handle much stimulation so almost nobody was allowed to hold her except her father and me.
Now my teen was always calm and he got passed around more than a football! Except for friends of his sister who had parents who didn't believe in immunizations. They weren't allowed near him, in the house, etc until he had had all his shots.
