LanceHughes -> Denver City Council Election -What a MESS! (4/15/2011 11:32:36 PM)

I live in Denver.  Last election, a woman by the name of Carla Madison won the City Council seat for my district by a small margin.  She did a great job for the last four years.  "Great" to the point she had no opponents come forward for this year's election.  The ballots were printed and mailed (in an all-mail election) about a week before she died.  OOPS!

The Denver Election Commission scrambled to find the appropriate rulings and laws.  Write-in candidates must be at least 25 years old and a resident of District 8 for at least 2 years.  No signatures must be gathered, only a small $10 filing fee by April 18th. (Three days from now.)  As of yesterday, the 14th, there were officially 24 candidates as listed in The Denver Post.  At a political meeting earlier tonite, 4 more were announced.  Monday?  Who knows?

The Post called it a "dog-pile" and suggested that a VERY popular ex-Mayor declare as a candidate with the understanding that immediately after being sworn-in, he resign so that there would be need for a "proper" special election.

All looks good, right?  Just one small fly in that ointment.  Said ex-Mayor refuses and has endorsed one of the (now) 28 candidates.

::: SIGH :::

What say you?

I doubt I would endorse any of the 28 candidates.

Which one will start pulling corporate charters?

Quickly change your legal name to None of the Above, and submit your $10 filing fee on Monday... taking care to be the very last filer of the day.

With at least 29 candidates on the ballot, you have an excellent chance of winning... [;)]

FR

Why shouldn't there be 28 candidates, in every election ?

T^T

Yeah... 'cept he doesn't live in this run-down district.

Not this time.... they are "all over the board."

And, to tell the truth, some are "overboard."

I tend to agree.

Problem is that we (residents of District 8) haven't had - and won't have - ANY time to get to research them.

Some folks are trying to get a "forum" together.

Some are recommending holding your mail-in ballot until said forum.

MANY, I'm sure have sent in their ballots marked for Ms. Madison. AND that's the worst thing - if you did so, you have lost any chance to vote for part of the dog-pile.

Not really.... top two enter run-off. <Unless one person gets 50% + one vote.>

I would not want the job.  Frankly- I dont even bother with city meetings anymore.  Every issue is "pre-decided" and they just need back ground people for a photo op.

It pisses me off.  I was the lone comment on over 100 surveys on the river from project.... and my points were ignored!    It was explained to me- that... 99% of the people  "agreed"....  by failing to register their complaints.

Tho- if this boon doggle is what people actually WANT - that will bring up property values-  then maybe I can sell and get off the busy street.

The point is-  what residents, and home owners wants- ...  is not what the top brass want...

LanceHughes -> RE: Denver City Council Election -What a MESS! (4/20/2011 10:35:17 PM)

How 'bout 39 candidates?

Would've been 40, but one withdrew before deadline.

MUST be a record.  Anybody know of any contenders?

LanceHughes -> RE: Denver City Council Election -What a MESS! (4/23/2011 10:24:07 PM)

At this point..... 7 robocalls, 3 flyers in the mail, one under the windshield wipers of my truck, and 3 personal visits - each of those 14 contacts from different candidates. I decided to write-in Carla Madison's husband - who is registered as a write-in. He was not one of those 14. My guess for top two vote getters and the candidates for a run-off are 2 of the 3 that sent mail pieces.  All three were VERY well done.  If the voters had no info other than contacts, they would probably "go" with one of those three.

Didn't a ficus tree win an election once?
