So that is now two women in America who do not dyethier hair! Woo-Hoo! The legions are growing!

I have not seen the inside of a brauty prlor in close to thirty years, after too many very bad haircuts, and quite frankly, a very hectic life that required I take every time short cut I could.
So for years, long hair, thrown up into a bun was an efficiency, and valuing naturalness above artificiality.
I still value naturalness, and am very proud to be female and love dressing very feminine.

Besides, Dominants love long hair, it's a great for control, direction, discipline.

Three. :D I don't have a hair fetish but I do have something akin to a bondage fetish and hair bondage rocks. I just cut off about 2 feet of hair and it still falls past my waist though I can no longer sit on it. There is plenty of hair left with which to work when Himself is in the mood though and that's all he requires. [:D]

This.

Very very few people actually look good with long hair, especially men.

i had long hair for years and it was well down my back but i recently hacked it off and it's barely chin length. While my reason for doing so was trend inspired (lolita) i can honestly admit there's a striking difference. i carry my age extremely well but the shearing was a dramatic change. my stylist was comfortable making the switch but the fringe gave her conniptions. She kept asking if i was certain i wanted to do it because i'd look very young. After quite a bit of hesitation she finally added the bang and oh my gosh what the hell was i thinking all these years? There's no way (save some dominant that insists on having Rapunzel) that i'm ever going back! i'll take the easy maintenance and loss of years any day. [;)]

when I see women over 40 ( and I am one ) with long hair that is unstyled and long but just hanging their for sake of being long, it does nothing but age  them, and look so dated. If you are going to keep your hair long it requires maintenance and styling or it will be worse than having short hair.

Not true.

I'm 40 and do not process my hair at all.  The most "styling" I do to it is put it up in a ponytail.  It's long, sleek, shiny and I never stop getting compliments on it.  I also rarely get taken for 40.  Most people guess me in the 27-32 range.

When people ask how I care for my hair, I tell them that I use high quality shampoo and conditioner, trim the split ends a couple of times a year and that's it.  I never blow dry, curl or perm it and seldom use dye.  If you want beautiful, healthy hair STOP styling it.  There's nothing worse for aging a woman than dried out, over-processed hair.

Don't forget to brush/comb obsessively.  Nothing will ruin your day more than having to deal with knots.

Just because a woman styles her hair doesn't mean it's over processed or she utilizes any chemicals. And i don't encounter many people that trim their hair twice per year either. i've been to some very high end stylists in my lifetime and spent years as a hair model for Vidal Sassoon. The condition of your hair is a reflection of maintenance, diet, and the quality of the products. The disparity in technique is what typically causes damage since most consumers cannot replicate what the stylist does at home nor are they using the same equipment or styling products in most instances. And in my not so humble opinion, what a woman of twenty years can pull off is vastly different from a woman that's forty plus. Being well coiffed goes well beyond ones attire. It's the entire package.

I worked as an adult entertainer and model in my 20s.  Part of my job was looking good.  I spent a lot of time blow-drying, curling and spraying my hair and treating it with a wide range of products.  My diet is terrible; I eat way too much fast food and always have.  My hair looks better at 40 than it did at 25 and I do less to it, although I do use better quality shampoo and conditioner now.  It's no secret that heat and chemicals damage hair.  I don't buy into the beauty myth that more styling = better looking.  So in my not so humble opinion, anyone who says that doing lots of "stuff" is a requirement for good hair is full of it.  Whether or not a 40-something can pull off the same look as a 20-something has as much to do with genetics and health habits beyond diet (e.g. smoking, drinking, tanning, etc.) as it does with the style.  The classics never die and anyone can wear them.

i don't know what you're implying by "stuff" since Sassoon's philosophy has never involved overdoing it. If anything they promote a less is more approach, particularly for those that are prone to damage from chemicals due to their hair type. And you're correct, the other things do matter and they factor into ones look. i was always taught that my hair is my crowning glory and its maintenance or lack of could add to or detract from ones appearance. And while anyone can put on a well tailored suit, it doesn't mean she'll step out looking like Coco. All the little bits make a profound difference, but ones adherence to these things is a matter of personal preference.

Rather than invade the shaved head thread, I thought I'd start one for the opposite view. I love long hair, on men, women, myself, my cats...

An otherwise plain looking person can become very interesting to me if they have long beautiful hair. It's a shame that many men my age lose theirs, although there are thankfully exceptions. I can't spend the rest of my life playing with toyboys after all.

For me it's a fetish. Who else likes long hair, or takes it further into a real fetish?

I do think long hair usually looks good one people. I probably should cut my own as many seem to disapprove of it on males past their twenties (I'm in my late 30's [8|]) but just can't do it lol. I have to admit I rarely find women with short hair attractive - sometimes it leads to a cherubic look.

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: Long Hair Fetish (4/18/2011 12:35:27 AM)

I have hair past my waist... I only use shampoo and conditioner... I get a hair cut twice a year. I never blow dry and have dyed only a select few times with a special dye to prevent drying.

My hair is the most healthiest many stylists have seen when i go for my half year trim. Im often there being touched and fondled because it looks so good...

Heat damages hair, styling products unless you have a few thousand dollars to spend a year on them alone, damages hair....

Also I usually just throw my hair up in a pony tail or braids and let it go. I really dont care what other think of my appearance unless someone close to me makes a comment...

Or worse, they cut it short and instantly look old. I'm 54, I see no reason to cut mine!

O often hear about how much trouble long hair is supposed to be, but having had it all my life, i just look at people quizzically as they say it.

I wash it, use conditioner, and I trim ever 3-4 years. That's it! Where is all thsi high maintenance? Surely not as troublesome a short styles that need constant blowdrying and re-cutting.

I get a lot of compliments on my hair so it can't be the look you're describing. The red streaks added a bit of trouble, but I'm working on making it less so by switching to a more permanent dye.

I've seen men over 40 look good with long hair, full and silky. I come across a lot of women who express an attraction for long hair, including some in this thread. yes there are the ones who don't like it as well, you can never please everyone. Tastes vary. But never cut it to please some general 'them'. It would take you right off the radar of others who share the appreciation of it.

It's not that troubling, to be honest.  The only troubling part is if you experience knots often which is easily fixed by using a wide-toothed comb while applying conditioner.

Now waiting for it to dry can be tiresome, especially if you have a date.  You almost have to get up two hours earlier to make sure you don't go out looking like you just took an emergency shower.

The less women with those horrible "granny" hairstyles, the better.

i have long hair, almost waist length and layered. it's black and i do put a blue black die through it occassionaly. other then that i wash it with polytar shampoo as any other strips the skin off my scalp, no matter who made it or what it costs. i condition it with vit e and aloe-vera, though to be perfectly honest it's like putting creams on your skin, anything will make dry skin look instantly better, but hair and skin come from the inside. therefore a good diet is the best thing for good hair. i use straighteners on it as it can't make its mind up whether it's straigght or curly, on a damp day i get ringlets.

my hair is of medium thickness but i have tons of it, it's glossy and soft and i'm always asked how i get such a fantastic shine on it. i freely admit to my hair being my biggest vanity, it's the one thing i've always liked and by my choice i always have it long. i refuse to cut it short just because some so called style expert says women over a certain age should cut it. you can either pull off long hair or you can't. i can and so it will stay how i want it untill i get fed up of it. now only that, but i love my playmate to wrap it around his fist and pull.

i do like long hair on guys, but again, it looks good on some and not others. i don't think thin whispy hair looks good long on anyone though. my playmate used to have his long years ago, when i met him he had it shaved short but this winter he grew it out so that he had a bit of a Mr Darcy thing going on. i loved it being able to get my hands in it, unfortunately he's had to cut it though.

i have no trouble with knots . when i wash my hair i use the shower. when rinsing off the conditioner i use a wide tooth comb at the same time and it just glides right through.
my hair is my main vanity. i will never be too old for long hair.

Cheers for the vote of support. I agree people shouldn't compromise on things like this. I find that some women seem to really like men with long hair and others act as if I have two heads lol. I get the impression most don't like it though! My hair is thick n' curly and half way down my back so its pretty long. Its more rocker than the tasteful artisty bohemian type of length found on some thirty something and middle aged men so perhaps it is seen as disreputable! [sm=shame.gif] lol

Lucylastic -> RE: Long Hair Fetish (4/18/2011 6:28:09 AM)

I just cut my hair and gave myself bangs, the bits I cut off were 18 inches long,
I also cut off six inches in the back and now its just below my waist
I only use conditioner and dye it every 3 months , I havent had a hair dryer or curlers/tongs in fifteen years

I don't often have problems with knots, mine is too silky to stay in braids even. But yes, wide tooth comb, start at bottom and work up carefully. Your hair is lovely BTW. Now if you were sub...;)

I carefully time washing my hair as I won't completely dry it with a hair dryer.

Having been on threads about this on other forums, I'd say it's at least evenly split. Love it or hate it, like Marmite.

ForeverFire -> RE: Long Hair Fetish (4/18/2011 10:42:33 AM)

I have to admit, I adore longer hair.  Playing with it, running my hands through it...having fall over our faces...yummy.

On women, it really depends on the facial shape, I find.  And their cheekbones.  If you've got the angles for shorter hair, do it!  Rock it!

On men, it's just the simple fact that I don't like crew cuts.  Oh, or those really silly turned-up-bang kind of thing.  Length gives you options.

As for mine...right now it's a little below my bra strap.  I wash it twice a week with a sulphite-free hair shampoo bar, rinse with cider vinegar.  I do a warm herb-infused oil treatment an hour before hand.  I get my hair thinned three times a year (or the headaches are deadly), and I trim the ends every 6 months.  I do dye my hair twice a year (once in the late spring, once in the winter), with no-ammonia products.  Just to give my hair a bit more dimension.

I do not heat style.

And I comb my hair twice a day:  morning to braid, and night to unwind.
