I realize today that I have hit a milestone. I am now officially out of the latest technology loop. So my terminology may be wrong, but please bear with:

I've heard of ways people use webcams to watch a room remotely. I'd like to set it up so that my brand new, fresh and shiny sub (!!!) broadcasts over the internet or directly to me, a view from his bedroom and one from the living room. (He has computers in both rooms).

When he's at work it wouldn't be terribly interesting, but just something fun to try. (He's close enough to see IRL, but weekends only depending on both our schedules and for a service position rather than a relationship one).

I'm wondering how this would be done? I know you can webchat through msn, yahoo, skype. Does it let you stay logged on 24/7? Can you use multiple computers in the same home to do that, or only one per account? Having a conference call with one's self seems a bit. . .odd.

Is it better to find a site for 'live broadcasting' and have each computer on a separate account there, which I can watch by logging into their private urls? If so what are the best (free) sites for that?

open an msn window and connect to his bedroom cam. open a yahoo window and connect to his living room cam.
there are other ways to do it, but this would be the simplest and involve no expense or major computer savy.

It seems like this would work, but when one IM is using my cam, the other says it's busy and won't work.....

don't use your cam. just accept his offer of a cam on each im. and if that doesn't work try skype to one room, and im to the other. play with the various combinations, but don't send your cam to him, just accept his cam to you.

If you want a guaranteed uninterrupted connection you'd be better off streaming live via feed on a website. The problem with instant messenger is that they do disconnect on occasion and it won't reconnect your cam automatically without the request being sent. i'm aware that some parents use this technology to monitor their children through so-called nanny cams. You may want to google that for additional ideas.

There is also some programs you can find that would allow you to see there cams both parties have to download them, if you want I can send you links I will have to refind them but should not take me to long

While using a couple of IM programs might sort of work, it would be pretty kludgy for any continuous monitoring – as porcelaine already pointed out. A streaming webcam program or service would be much better suited for that purpose.

No personal experience with them, but a few free possibilities you could try:

Running two full computers just as webcams strikes me as a bit inefficient. If it's something you actually decide to do long-term, you might want to look into network cameras, like this, that don't require a separate computer to operate.

You've given some interesting suggestions. i never considered the network cam, but i haven't used one in eons! i appreciate the free options as well, though this may be a situation where you get what you pay for. i'll definitely do a little research. Thanks again.

Hi.

Thanx for posting this question. It's given me some great ideas to try with my slave. I agree that it'd be better to do it live from your own site so you've got more control over the program and it's operation. Good luck!! Now I'm going to go ask the HeadMistress about this idea to see if we can do this at the Academy.
