DomKen -> I guess the "oppressive" federal government is looking a lot better (4/18/2011 3:00:46 PM)

Seems Perry likes the rest of us a lot better when he needs our money to prop up his libertarian paradise.

I'd tell him to go contract with industry.

As an aside, I'd also tell him to give up the military bases within Texas.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry sought additional federal help in battling wildfires across his drought-parched state...

He hates federal intrusion... except when he's facing a natural disaster.

Purely in the interest of countering your tendency to reach for ever new depths of dishonest partisan spin, see if you can figure out the difference between an unwanted intrusion and a request for help.

And you don't see the hypocrisy in that?

Perry is allowed to use the federal government and his claims that Texas doesn't need them in order to pander to his political base, but it is perfectly alright for him to pick and choose when he wants to use the federal government?

Perry repeated his running theme that Texas' economy is in relatively good shape compared with other states and with the "federal budget mess." Many in the crowd held signs deriding President Barack Obama and the $786 billion federal economic stimulus package.

Later, answering news reporters' questions, Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.

"There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

Since when does criticising the government dis-entitle one to their assistance that would be afforded any other taxpaying people ?

This is one of the worst loads of shit I've heard in some time.

Well in this case I think it's when the one criticizing it a republican.

jlf1961 -> RE: I guess the "oppressive" federal government is looking a lot better (4/19/2011 12:21:54 PM)

Republicans are quick to criticize government, government agencies and programs, but even faster to stick their hands out for money from the same government, agency or program.

It is called being a hypocrite.

Where do you find this bizzare claim that he says, "that Texas doesn't need them<the Feds>".

Why do you have to make up stuff to make a point?

Kinda fuckin a lunatic if on one hand you say Gov't is WAAYYYYYYYYY too big then on the other cry about Gov't not helping "you". Think perry needs his big boy pants on and suck it up. Made it , sleep in it.

When you are bleating about the "size" of gov't and how we can't afford anything and need to cut things...yeah, that makes you unable to get assistance.

Threatening to secede from the union is not what I consider 'criticizing the government'.

His words in the past went farther than 'criticism'.

luckydawg -> RE: I guess the "oppressive" federal government is looking a lot better (4/20/2011 2:21:53 PM)

Why don't you post those words? Or admit you were incorrect.

Here is what he said (hint, it has been posted a few times already and is in the article).

"Later, answering news reporters' questions, Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.

"There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. Why do so many folks on here have to make up stuff to validate thier opinions.

If your opinions don't fit the facts, why make stuff up, why not modify your opinions?

Think for yourself not what the spinners at HUffpo and washington monthly tell you to think.

Sanity -> RE: I guess the "oppressive" federal government is looking a lot better (4/20/2011 2:47:56 PM)

Except Gov. Perry never threatened to succeed from the union, you must have misread his words. Either that or someone is feeding you a line...

No, but it sounds like he wouldn't slow-roll it.

"Later, answering news reporters' questions, Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.

FR

So freedom of speech costs you any benefits you might get from paying taxes all your life, while they can give it away to illegal aliens who never paid a dime, but know how to shut the fuck up. Gotcha.

I'm glad to be a non taxpayer, and in the near future I might be faced with the decision to volunteer again and pay due to business circumstances but you know what ? Maybe I just won't engage in that enterprise, creating a few jobs and keeping some of the dollars here in this country. Maybe I'll just give up on that idea. I'll just steal back what my family and I paid in and fade away. How's that ?

Yes I could do just a teeny little bit of good in the world, but now I wonder if it's worth it. Do I have to toe the party line to get what everyone else can get ? Do I have to shut the fuck up ? Not voice my opinion ? If that is so I'll take my loot and this country can go fuck itself. I'll burn everything and take that insurance money to Austrailia.

Is that the idea ? Pay and if you want any of it back you have to be a slave, without voice priveledges ? If so I'm out. I'll tell you this, you want to win at poker ? Don't be afraid to fold. Fuck this.

T^T

You miss the point Term.

It's not about freedom of speech, it's about Perry's stance toward the federal government.

He has said repeatedly that Texas is able to stand on its own without any federal government interference.

How's that stance working out for him now?

And I guarantee you after the federal government steps in to bail him out he will return to his same rhetoric as if it never happened.

As others have noted above, you fail to see the difference between government intrusion....e.g., the Federal Government coericng the Colorado government to lower their legal limit for drivers who've been drinking through the threat of with-holding federal funding ...= intrusion into a state's business....vs. the government being asked to step in and help in times of natural disaster....= fulfilling one of the roles of the federal government = lend assistance and support that the state does not have available due to much more limited resources than the federal government (promotion of the general welfare)

Despite what many....progressive and conservative alike...think, the idea behind the Federal Government is not to continue to grow it. And states' rights to govern themselves...as long as they do not pose a threat to the UNION.... with the Feds available as requested when necessary, should remain paramount.
