dcnovice -> Wine With Lamb? (4/18/2011 8:03:32 PM)

I'm on wine detail for Easter Sunday dinner, which will be lamb (probably butterflied and cooked on the grill). Any wine suggestions?

Something yummy spicy and fruity. How about a nice Barolo, a Barbera, a Valpolicella? Here in Canada we can get a really great Cabernet Franc, this is a truly yummy grape. Malbec would be tasty. Some Primativo's are so juicy but I have had at least oen I loathed.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. Lamb and red wine, you will be fine!

Have fun dcnovice!

personally i can't stand lamb as it makes me ill, but i agree with the fruity and spicey reds. shiraz, merlot or the australian shiraz cabernet sauvignon is ideal. it's fruit, oak and vanilla so wonderful with rich meats. i'm affraid that being in the uk i'm not that up on US wines.

have a good weekend though whatever you choose.

No suggestion here as I can't stand lamb and barely drink wine either...

How will the lamb be seasoned?   I'm not sure that you'll find anything to go with a BBQ sauce, but there's plenty of good red choices for other seasonings.

since you did not mention the seasoning of the lamb, I am going to assume it is the typical salt/pepper/garlic seasoning. If so, you can't go wrong with a good Zinfandel, as it tempers garlic very well.

I was going to say something similar, but go with a Merlot or a Cabernet if you the OP prefers less tanin.   Zinfendal is overpowered by salty flavors imho.

If it is going to be strongly seasoned you would be well served with a Cabernet for a milder lamb I'd go for a younger red like a Merlot or Shiraz.

Lamb. [:)]. *yummy*

I like the traditional Cab recommendation, also a full Australian Malbec, or even a varietal Syrah/Shiraz would be nice.

Oh and Rancho Zabaco "dancing bull" Zinfandel is delicious with grilled meat, peppery and raspberry notes, it's a great low priced wine.   Love it with grilled steak or ribs.

As it is lamb I would actually suggest ouzo liquor not wine. I think it agrees with lamb better, but that is just my opinion.

holly! salt and pepper? for heaven's sake, hope you're plunging a knife deep into the meat, slivering some garlic and poking it in, then thrusting a nice thick sprig of rosemary in as well! i hope it's an Aus or NZ lamb, they're some of the best in the world! sam's club sold them way back when i lived in the states.

as for wine:
"With a classic roast leg of lamb, bristling with garlic and rosemary, go for a traditional, full-bodied, European style. Lamb has a natural affinity with two grapes – cabernet sauvignon (as in Bordeaux, and beyond), and tempranillo (Rioja, and beyond). Cabernet’s minty, cassis hints work well here, but, then again, so do Rioja’s more mellow strawberry and vanilla. Take your pick.

But with a roast of tender, almost sweet spring lamb, pick a lighter, juicier red. Pinot noir, then, and preferably one of those delectable, perfumed, modern labels from New Zealand or Chile. It’s a little pricey, both food and wine, but Easter is surely a time for a treat."

[sm=jaw.gif] WOW! quite the wealth of knowledge you are Angel...

I liked pairing bold, vibrant red wines with Lamb when I was a chef.

Try MollyDooker Blue eyed Boy Shiraz if you are doing chops.
It's a deep, complex wine with lots of tannins, really brings out the lamb flavor.
Better, it's reasonably priced and should be easy to find.
Just remember to shake the bottle before serving.

lol, gothik, i pasted the link i found - wasn't knowledge. i know which wines i like with lamb, and heaven knows i've cooked a lot of lamb roasts in my time, but the wines i have access to don't seem to be available in the states at least. (i have a fondness for some of the south aus wines from the mclaren vale area)

VideoAdminAlpha -> RE: Wine With Lamb? (4/22/2011 11:31:02 AM)

I would say a retsina if you could get it-it is greek white wine made locally. It is not heavy nor anise flavored like Ouzo( I save ouzo for getting "toasted" :) )

This would be my vote, I love a quality Malbec

mcbride -> RE: Wine With Lamb? (4/22/2011 12:01:03 PM)

oh, man, I gotta get out of religion and politics more often.

What a great thread, and great ideas.   Barbera, Barolo...whew.  A couple of my absolute favourites. And any of the bigger Cabs. And there are a couple of Cotes du Rhones...

I love Retsina, too, as a cooking wine.
