Dude, that was all over the net, not just Fox news.  I first heard it on that den of iniquity, NPR.

I swear, lately you've really, really jumped the shark.

While I may have a lot to feel guilty about, with regards to my "carbon footprint", this isn't one of them. The energy effecient (though apparently not efficient enough) refrigerator I use does not contain an ice maker. More to the point, I can't remember the last time I even used ice. My primary beverage is water.

Okay, that's probably more information than anyone cares to know. :D

To the OP: I imagine the energy requirements to cool a typical server room is considerable. Perhaps they should be housed in basements, where there would be at least a modicum of cooler temps. I assume you are being sarcastic about the first part of your post, so I will not address that portion.

Doesnt matter where you house them, server units generate a lot of heat and the energy needed to keep them functional is considerable.

Piddly little ice makers are nothing in comparison.

There are at least 2 less server rooms than there are refrigerators with ice makers, and I have that on good authority.  The air conditioners that serve those server nests are highly efficient since they also serve buildings in most cases as well. Efficiency in air conditioners is climbing, not so with ice makers.

So I really don't see any connection.

You obviously dont know shit about server rooms mnot, and you appear outlandish when you try to lecture about things you are ignorant of.

Tom,

if((sockfd = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, 0)) == -1)

explain to me what this line means.....

I can explain it, I developed an application that used 5,000 servers for Nynex.

This line is some trivial shit.

So you know I been around, and this ain't a cheapshot, check it out:

And then tell me what shit you know about servers and server nests.

That has squat to do with server room AC units mnot [:D]

mnottertail -> RE: How the Ice in Your Drink is Imperiling the Planet!!! (4/22/2011 7:35:57 AM)

I know a great deal about those as well, Tom.
http://www.wbengineering.com/projects-mcritical-verizonbh.html

This is where the server BUILDING for Nynex (now verizon) housed my servers, and there were several floors of servers, mine weren't the only ones.

That is just a little room with a little HVAC project.

Air conditioners are increasing in efficiency.  Ice makers are not.  There are millions of ice makers and not millions of server rooms.

Again, most server rooms are fed with the buildings air conditioners, and while there are entire server buildings most are mom and pop size.  And it aint just servers there are many computers that aren't servers in these buildings across our country, and they don't collectively waste energy like the ice makers in refrigerators do.

An entire building...

How many refrigerators do you suppose that is equivalent to. [;)]

mnottertail -> RE: How the Ice in Your Drink is Imperiling the Planet!!! (4/22/2011 7:46:39 AM)

I dunno, it is alot of refrigerators, it is alot of icemakers.  The air conditioners are far more efficient than an ice maker, seems like a few little tricks to make ice makers more efficient are not out of line then, if they can do it for server room air conditioners.

I know you like to dismiss everything that is environmentally wrong with a picture of a coke can on a baseball field, but it isn't a real picture.

And the point is, this is an easy and inexpensive fix.   And it saves money, materiel, and machinations.

No reason for a tempest in a teapot here.  Fix the fuckers.  End of joke. Earn those million dollar bonuses.

Theyre still putting old technology AC units in a lot of server rooms, even new ones you seem to think are the norm aren absolutely unnecessary. Theyre a luxury in most cases, really.

Seems like to me that if leftists were really serious about pleasing their Earth Goddess Gaia they would log off the Internet pronto and never show their miserable screen names around these parts again...
