WASHINGTON — Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, facing an ethics investigation over his affair with a former campaign aide, announced Thursday that he would resign his seat effective May 3.

This isnt the part that bothers me. I dont care who fucks who.

The following is what is blatantly wrong with this Senator and our whole political process.

quote:

The 52-year-old Republican announced in March that he would not pursue re-election. He acknowledged in June 2009 that he had an extramarital affair with Cynthia Hampton, a former member of his campaign staff, and that he had helped her husband, Doug Hampton, a member of his congressional staff, obtain lobbying work with a Nevada company.

The ethics investigation focuses in part on some $96,000 Ensign's parents gave to the Hamptons, which Ensign's attorney has characterized as a gift.

Ensign and Cindy Hampton began their affair in December 2007, according to accounts provided by Ensign's office and Doug Hampton. Doug Hampton discovered the affair through a text message and confronted Ensign on Christmas Eve, according to Hampton.

In April 2008, Ensign's parents, Mike and Sharon Ensign, gave the Hampton family $96,000. Ensign characterized the money as given "out of concern for the well-being of longtime family friends during a difficult time."

We have a US Senator who put himself into a position to be blackmailed.

WTF???

I used to work in defense.  At one point, I had a high level security clearance that involved going over my life for the past fifteen years.  Where I'd lived, where I'd worked, etc.  The idea was to verify that I had no past excessive use of drugs or alcohol, or excessive spending.  Anything to make sure that I wasn't susceptible to foreign agents who could bribe or blackmail me for info.  (Sadly, I was never approached by foreign agents.)

It has always amazed me that Senators and Congresspeople who have access to all kinds of government secrets are never vetted to make sure their lifestyles are as benign as mine is/  And that there have never been any reported incidents of them selling secrets.

Yeah, Ensign is a piece of work.  He broke the law and got himself two extra years of living on the taxpayers' dime before resigning.  Evidently the investigation is about to wrap up on May 4 or something.  I hope that he faces criminal charges once out of office.

Sounds like everyone involved in this story was a scumbag.

From your link:

Doug Hampton was indicted this March 24 by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., on charges he violated federal criminal conflict of interest laws.

Here's more on that:

Ex-Aide to Senator Ensign Indicted for Corruption

Douglas Hampton was indicted Thursday on seven counts of violations of congressional rules that prohibit Senate employees from lobbying a year after they leave public service.

It seems, according to this article, when Hampton became frustrated he was not getting the help he expected from Ensign's office in his lobbying efforts that was when he went to Fox News about the affair.

You do know it was Fox News that broke the Ensign story, right?

Or are they part of the liberal mainstream media now too?

Didnt have anything to do with a Republican, had everything to do with an elected official putting himself in this position.

Glad to hear that there was no media coverage of Chappaquiddick, Rangel, Waters, Lewinsky, etc., etc., etc.

Seriously, Sanity, the comment about how their side is worse than our side gets old.  Except I have to admit that it adds some piquancy when the party of championing family values gets caught with its pants down.

Senator? Didn't we have a president not too long ago who was in a similar situation?

Who the fuck is Rangel and Waters?

Oh yeah that was on CNN nonstop for months...

Not!

And are you finally going on record admitting that the Dems want to destroy traditional families?

Thank you for that much honesty at least, Steven.

Similar? Yes. And raked over the coals on these boards as well.

Your point? Should Ensign be afforded different treatment because he is a Republican?

Huh?

Waters got about as much coverage as Ensign, and Range much more.  I don't see why you're claiming that the media deliberately underreported them.  Especially when the Ensign investigation has gone on two years.

The Dems do not want to destroy traditional families, but they don't trumpet their intolerance for affairs either.  Like Gingrich, who went after Clinton for the Lewinsky affair while screwing around himself.  I hate hypocrisy.

Reality check taz, Ensign is resigning and no one is defending him.

Its you leftists who have the widely variable standards, note how Dark Steven bizarrely tries to justify it. Leftists assert because the GOP hasnt abandoned traditional familys altogether any Republican must be judged far more harshly if one has an affair...

Its that double standard (here and in the traditional leftist media) and the fact that so many of you stand behind it that people love to mock so much.

TAZ you devil, I believe the sentence I built for you offers considerable less euphonic damage left over, in fair and balanced manner it simply rolls off the tongue.

You're putting words in my mouth.

If someone goes to lengths to tell everyone what a good Christian he or she is, I judge them more harshly when they sin.

If someone wraps themself in the flag, I judge them more when they betray the nation.  Like outing a CIA agent, for example.

At no point did I state that the Dems have abandoned the family.  As a matter of fact, Obama has been using family photo ops more than any other President since JFK.

Thats bullshit Steven, and you know it.

At least you should, they barely touched those guys. Rangel was easily reelected, and everyones heard all about this, right - from, how did Pelosi word her promises. "The most transparent Congress ever" or the cleanest, most ethical, whatever her hollow, empty, meaningless promises were:

quote:

Congress Ethics Mess: What’s the Hold Up on the Maxine Waters Investigation?

Last year Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) landed on Judicial Watch’s “Washington’s Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians,” and for good reason. Waters (and her partner in crime, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA)) helped secure a TARP grant for the failing Massachusetts bank OneUnited — a bank in which her husband had a significant investment. (Michelle Malkin reports that Waters’ husband, Sidney Williams held a $350,000 stake in OneUnited as recently as June 2008.)

Could the conflict of interest be any more egregious?

We didn’t think so. And for a while it appeared the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct (a.k.a. The House Ethics Committee) agreed. The Committee announced last fall there would be a speedy trial to consider the charges against Waters. And, on the heels of the massive investigation and very public trial of Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), there was reason to be somewhat optimistic that Waters would be held accountable.

That is until House Ethics Committee Chairman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) started meddling in the process. Not only did Lofgren fail to issue subpoenas for records related to the scandal, but she also delayed the ethics committee hearing after doing everything in her power to undermine the professional committee staff leading the investigation. And, as if that were not enough, Lofgren then improperly fired two attorneys working on the investigation.

Now the Waters investigation is stuck in the mud.

A spokesman for House Ethics Committee Chairman Rep. Joe Bonner (R-AL), who has slammed Lofgren on more than one occasion for mishandling the investigation, declined to comment on when a hearing would be rescheduled. (It looks to me as if Lofgren was trying to help Waters co-conspirator Barney Frank as much as Waters.)

Meanwhile, The Washington Post recently highlighted documents from the FDIC that provide new details on something Judicial Watch reported last year — OneUnited Bank was in deplorable financial shape at the time of the TARP grant (partially because of a questionable $50 million investment in the sinking ship that was Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), and would never have received government assistance without the intervention of Waters and Frank:

A decision in late 2008 by top officials of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to help a politically connected bank in Boston left federal bank examiners there angry enough that some called it a “travesty of justice,” according to internal e-mails obtained by The Washington Post.

The chairman of OneUnited Bank, a friend of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), had rendered it insolvent through lavish spending and bad investments, according to the examiners’ written accounts. But by the end of that year, after Waters arranged a key Treasury Department meeting for the bank, it had won a bailout loan and a unique exemption from the FDIC’s accounting rules.

“There are some really good people expressing very strong opinions regarding what they view as a travesty of justice regarding the special treatment this institution is receiving,” acting regional director John M. Lane warned in a March 2009 e-mail to Christopher J. Spoth, a senior FDIC consumer protection official.

(As reported in the January 22, 2009, edition of the Wall Street Journal, the Treasury Department indicated it would only provide bailout funds to healthy banks to jump-start lending.)

A travesty of justice. That’s a perfect description not only for the OneUnited cash infusion, but also the manner in which the Waters House ethics “investigation” has “proceeded.”

I never claimed anyone was defending him. I said his actions were deplorable. Blackmail is an ugly thing. And Ensign is resigning so the Ethics Committee wont be able to prosecute him.

Note what I said in the OP about who he fucks, Sanity. I could care less. Thats between him and his wife. MY concern is the 96,000 dollars that was paid after the hubby confronted Ensign. The hubby that got the lobbying job based upon the affair.

The affair started December 2007... the Hubby confronted Ensign that Christmas eve... 4 years ago. The supposed "gift" was in April, 2008. The affair didnt end until August 2008.

That piece of ass was extremely expensive, but Ensign didnt mind. He continued the affair even after she left his staff.

To say this was only about "family values" is disingenuous.
