Those big hotel towels are so soft, so absorbent -- they're like Bounty on steroids. No wonder you're tempted to take one home when you check out.

Be forewarned that when you and your pilfered towel walk out the lobby door, an alarm may go off somewhere.

At least three U.S. hotels are using radio frequency identification chips sewn into the fabric to track their towels, bathrobes and sheets.

Don't you know ? Wrap them in tinfoil !

T^T

LOL... the article does say that some were taken even after the chips were planted... pool towel theft dropped from 4000 a month to 750.... someone figured out the tinfoil trick! [;)]

Lojack for linens......gotta love it!  [:)]

tazzygirl -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/21/2011 11:18:25 PM)

Wouldnt it have been cheaper to simply charge the missing linens to the bill? Most everyone pays with credit cards these days.

soul2share -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/21/2011 11:37:06 PM)

Yeah, tazzy, you'd think they would do that.  I once stayed at the Hilton in Orlando, and they put a hold on my credit card for "incidentals" of $100.  The only problem I had was getting the damn thing released!  It took three e-mails and one very irate phone call before they finally got it right!  And I only used the card to hold the reservation.....I paid cash for the room.

I can see how a hotel would want to stop theft.  I do think people take towels when they should not.

The hotel in this program- I doubt uses $4 towels.

They have long bolted TVs and set them to alarms....

If I thought an rfid was in something I owned- I would pop it in the microwave.

.....chipping pills is not far behind the towels.

tazzygirl -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/22/2011 7:07:01 AM)

And they work so well that 750 got through their security system in one hotel.

pahunkboy -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/22/2011 7:09:31 AM)

^  I am sure staff has other things to do then to keep a real time inventory of the towels.

How about if some members are not so juvenile as to make the title of a thread a "poke" against another member?

PyrotheClown -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/22/2011 11:25:56 AM)

But alota people are on this site just to get poked lol

VideoAdminAlpha -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/22/2011 11:27:49 AM)

I would suggest not doing it as the title of a thread, unless it is a friendly gesture. If you have further questions or comments about this pyro, feel free to write me privately. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have on this matter. :)

Nice to see you Alpha. At first I thought someone started another thread about this and this one got shut down with a direction to the other thread.

But then there is the topic.........

Maybe what they should do is buy towels in bulk, forget about washing them and add them to the bill. Just let people take them. Really, it might not just be that they are nice towels, but that they have the name and insignia of a resort or hotel.

Or, they could ask at the front desk when you check in - " Towels or no towels ? ".

Or, they could chain them up, like pens at a bank. Hmmmm, that sounds like a pretty good idea, then they could ask " D ring or no D ring ? ". Even rent small padlocks.

I stayed at an old motel in Lancaster (hey Heretic, it's the Antelope Valley Inn) and the iron was tethered to the ironing board.

Actually, VAA, it wasnt a mean gesture. The person who I wont name again that was in the title is someone I know has an interest in these chips. In a recent thread, he and I both agreed it was possibly the wave of the future.

No one was "poke"ing at anyone, VAA.

FR:

I did not interpret it as a mean gesture.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/23/2011 8:57:07 AM)

I have never found hotel towels so nice an soft an plush I wanna take one home , in fact quite the oposit. I find them scratchy an unpleasant.

tazzygirl -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/23/2011 8:58:56 AM)

Oh I have found some that are wonderful... and yeah... I took a few home. But never the bath mat.

pahunkboy -> RE: radio frequency chips in towels (4/23/2011 9:40:43 AM)

I used to work at a hotel.  Some people stole the couch in the back lobby.  We found it...at the grounds of the monster truck rally.  ...recovered it.
