I'm looking for one that's not 9 hundred 99 bucks or some outragious price lol.

I need to be wirrelessnetwork able to take it out of town and ocasionally out of state. I need to im, email check maybe surf. And I need to be able to put my photosmart 375 software on it.

Can you do that?  put camera software on it and upload pics?

Try to find one you can buy without an operating system that supports linux which is virtually free, will save you a bundle.

Actually a PIII laptop would work just fine for basic stuff like pictures web browsing etc... I'm sure you could pick one up on Ebay fairly cheaply with windows xp or 98. If you looking for new well, dell is probably your best bet. I don't like Dells, but they are good for low to mid-range stuff at good prices. Just as long as you know how to install a OS, or someone that does.

and what's wiifi and stuff?

The only way you're most likely going to find a powerful, nice laptop for less than a thousand bucks is to buy it used.  There are lots of reliable sites that sell used laptops.  I'll ask my husband, he's a computer geek.  (I love sexy nerds.)  [:D]

I got my Laptop at Overstock.com
great price- wireless network. Don't know about the Photosmart software though.

I'd look for a used IBM Thinkpad in good shape. Like this:

Then get more RAM and try to get the original installation disks from IBM in case you need to reinstall. I mean, who knows what's on a used machine after all...

swtnsparkling -> RE: Lap tops (5/10/2006 6:55:24 AM)

That is what I got a IBM Thinkpad and installations disks as well.  Had it for over a yr with no problems what so ever Cost if I remember correctly was around 550.00

Look at Acer products.  They are very decent products for under $800 CAD, which should be about $700 USD.  I hate those Dells.  They are bulky, ugly, heavy pieces of crap.  A client yesterday had one and I would not take it if it was free.  My Acer has a bigger screen, just as many features if not more, comes with Windows XP yet is half the size and weight.  They also have a really good warranty.

is wiifi a typo? wifi is just wireless access. But it's not a hundred percent necessary the laptop come with the card as you can pick one up later for nearly nothing. I just looked and they have them for about 11.00 dollars w shipping on ebay. I buy all this common stuff on ebay used. You'll also need a wireless router connected to your internet connection if you don't already have one, and the the router and card will need to use the same wireless protocol. Never had a problem, just make sure the person you buy it from if you do has over 99.5 percent feedback and over a hundred positive feedback. That's really all you have to do to not get ripped on Ebay.

If I were you I'd buy a PIIIl(pentium 3 processor) or older P4 with at least a 1 ghz processor 512 ram, 40 GB hard drive, a guarantee on the condition of the battery, and make sure they are sending the original disk like windows, drivers disks etc.... If they are selling without the disks most likely it's going to come with a hacked copy of windows on it. The wifi card can be bought seperately as they are readily available used for almost nothing.

Naked on my Chain. Dell has a very nice looking one for 480 after rebate 628 before. lap tops don't have to be a thoughsand bucks or more to be Nice just depends on what you want it for.

SK I have a dell pc fpr table top and I like it just fine. I don't have any problem with dell, except no local in store tech support.

SirKenin -> RE: Lap tops (5/10/2006 12:22:27 PM)

The desktops are fine.  I have a Dell desktop here too.  Tech support from India is a little much, but other than that.

However, laptops, that you are interested in, are a whole different animal.  Dell does not build their own laptops.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Lap tops (5/10/2006 2:03:45 PM)

Unfortunately, I believe that new laptops are one of those things where you get what you pay for.  Like you said, though, it does depend on what you use it for.  If you found one for $480, why'd you ask, though?  Just curious.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Lap tops (5/11/2006 7:25:44 PM)

Naked on my chain I found it after someone posted the dells website  in this post actually..

I don't know anything about what they can do though.  however you're right you won't get the best premo yum yum top of the line for 480. It don't have to be top of the line though lol. It just has to be able to websurf run ims and maybe be able to handle a photo software.
