Got quite a few pissy friends who had fallen into it and didn't realise straight away that itw as the answering maschine instead of me...over here I dont speak on it and just use the standardised message as over here I receive more unwanted phonecalls than back home, because of which I prefer to just use the standardised text with a different voice.

I knew a couple that had the message:

"We are currently screening our calls right now, please say really loudly who you are, and if we want to talk to you we will pick up, if not that means we did not want to talk to you so leave a message"

There were people who actually cursed them on their answering machine.... some people have no sense of humor.

In the 80s, a contraband smuggler had close call with the feds on the coast. Although he got away, his true identity had been exposed.  For safety, to prevent unwanted conversations from being overheard, he got all new numbers, some pagers and stopped answering the old ones.

Before he could distribute the new contact numbers and initiate a call back code system for the pagers, a prominent Italian gangster friend that couldn’t raise him on the phone paid a visit.  Sure enough, the Italian came bearing a gift . . . a portable, battery powered digital answering machine.  Out of respect for his friend and the gift, you would get this message if you called him:

“You have reached an answering machine that does not record messages”

Unfortunately, because i occassionally have clients call me on my cell, i have to have the boring -- hi this is angel, please leave me your name and number and i will get back to you.

I don't have one of those music rings/holder while i answer things either because i am afraid if i did and when my gram calls it will confuse her.

OMG Greedy, my boss ACCIDENTLY did something like that on her phone.  She said hello then got distracted for a sec and a pause and came back and again said hello this is ....  i made her change it lol cause it drove me nuts.

angel

The last round of power failures wiped out our message, I haven't bothered to record a new one. People still insist on leaving messages.

Des, we have awesome Kowalski headcheese in the refrigerator right now! And some vinegary homemade fortissimo that a friend gave me!

Oh yuck, why on earth would you want to keep something like that in fridge? Ye Gods, that's worse than collecting toenails!

Ed to add: Actually, what is 'headcheese'?

My answering machine is me in one of my sarcastic moods:

"I'm not going to tell you what to do after the beep, you should already know. But in case you don't, leave your name, number and a brief message and I will get back to you as promptly as possible. Thanks and have a great day."

I was in rare form that day

The outgoing message I enjoyed using most went, "Tragically, there's no-one here to be delighted by your call at present. However, I'd be jubilant at hearing your message should you leave one after the tone"

- Used when I used to get a lot of debt-collectors' calls during my student days. But you need to do a very dry, smarmy British accent (which comes easily to me) to bring it off properly.

It's your voice Peon, I've heard it. They just don't care what you say as long as you say it. Seriously, you could read a phone book out loud and make me happy

You don't want to know, but I will give you a hint. When you bump it against something, it wiggles like jello. Kinda reminds me of something you might find in a bio lab

Right. Headcheese sounds slightly more palatable than the stuff I was thinking about. You almost certainly don't want to know what stuff I was thinking about.
