kalikshama -> Moving company recommendations? (4/25/2011 9:16:05 AM)

A lot of people have mentioned moving. I'm having second thoughts about the moving company I was going to use. Did anyone have a good experience with a moving company recently? I am looking for US interstate.

I'm also debating between having a friend drive my car (1,600 miles) or using a service. Car transport service companies sound kind of shady - any good or bad experiences with them?

Interestingly, getting a U Haul truck with a tow dolly was only $300 less than using a moving company and car service, and that's before gas, so does not make sense from a purely financial point of view.

Thanks!

KK

Your best bet is to check locally. A lot of moving companies hire a local contractor to do the work so, for instance, allied im peoria might be awesome but in tallahassee, they would suck. Check also into independent contractors. a lot of the time, they will do just as good a job for less because they dont have the expense of national advertising.

Make sure they are insured too.

I wish I could help you on this one, but the way it works is that our packers/movers do so through sub-contract.  We didn't exactly choose them.  They did do a very good job and the guys who loaded our truck this time were a couple of the same ones who moved us in here.

I did happen to notice that U-Haul now advertises "unloading help" for when you arrive.  It's one of those directory by internet kind of things.  It's a little pricey, but if you've got heavy furniture, and you're on your own when you get there, it's an option.

I"ve always moved myself, several times across the country.  The trip itself wasn't bad, but I would have loved help on both ends.  Should I do it again, I'll hire help on both ends to move the heavy stuff.

One thing that might be worth looking into is ABF.  It's a trucking company that will transport your household goods for you.  You pack everything in wooden crates, they load them in to a big truck and off they go.  I don't know anything more specific than that, but you can check their website.  That way, all you have to do is drive your car from point A to point B.

Ironically, I"m moving from my apartment at the end of the month, but it'll be a very short move....just across the hall!  The landlord's giving me the 2 br for the 1br rate, it doesn't have the breand new appliances that this one has. or the hardwood floors, but I'll have just as much space, the washer and dryer, and I'm on the side of the building that gets the breezes and shade.  At least I don't have to haul that king sized mattress down that narrow stairway!
