Just something running around my mind. Many remember writing a book report in school, well this is about the same thing. The difference here is to not give the name of the book. Actually it can be a movie as well.

The idea is to express the plot accurately enough so that someone else can determine what book or movie it is. The more obscure the better. I would like to impose a size limit on posts, but if I even could and did, someone would find me and shoot me after seeing the length of some of my posts.

I have one in mind. Honestly I don't remember the title of it, but that's OK. And it's OK if others don't either, maybe someone knows. Don't reveal the title right away, let someone else guess. And if you don't know the title and someone guesses right, all the better.

I will give a review, but I am not going to kick it off in the OP here and now. The idea is to not go for the latest and greatest movies or the best seller list. Find things that are little known. We might all find some good reading as a result.

If a movie, avoid revealing the actors' names. Character names are fine, but might not be a good idea. Like if you say James Bond, it gives it away too easily. And fiction is best to maintain the mystery. Real stories of history and things like that will not present a sufficient challenge.

Revealing the title is up to you, just don't do it right away. If someone guesses correctly though, I guess you have to tell them.

Unless this thread hits the dirt, I'll be back with my own entry. I just don't want to kick it off right now.

Let's see what you got........

I'm game.

This is science fiction - a book, and it has won awards.

It is set (of course) in the future. The earth has been attacked by insect-type creatures that have a "hive" mind, but the queen is not of that ilk. She is more open to individuality.

The main character is a young boy who goes to military school - he is the greatest military mind in the world. While at school, he learns how to lead his troops, learns about weaponry, etc. He also learns about human nature and becomes hardened. He "blows off steam" by going to a computer game room to practice his strategy.

He realizes that the school has pitted other students against him, gives him unfair games to play, and cheats him. He and his especially selected troop of young soldiers become brilliant strategists and create their own crew, going on to win and win and win.

His sister and brother are also in the book - the sister is brilliant and writes letters as if she is an adult, speaking of the system, dealing with politics. The brother is also brilliant. However, the brother is a sociopath.

This book is one of several in a series.

What book is it?

best,
sunshine

This book is about a man who was lost at sea and stranded on an island for many years with one other person. Eventually he gets off the island and starts to make his way home. He meets with all kinds of problems along the way, but he's very clever and he always finds a way out of whatever predicament he's in. He finally makes it home to find that his son is all grown up and his wife is flirting with all these other men, which the man puts an end to pretty quickly, but still it's very sad that he had to spend the best years of his life away from his wife and family.

I would classify this novel as British romantic mystery.

The protagonist is a young adult male orphan who becomes entangled in a plot to defraud a very nice British family, because he is the double of a long lost (presumed suicide) boy. This long lost boy just so happens to have been a twin, and when our protagonist arrives on the scene to reclaim his inheritance (as the older of the twins), he effectively disinherits the younger, who is less than pleased.

Although the rest of the family welcome the protagnoist back with open arms, the younger twin seems to know he is not really who he claims to be.

To further complicate matters, the protagonist falls in love with the twin's sister, but since he is pretending to be her brother, he most obviously cannot act on his feelings.

The plot builds on the protagonist's guilt over defrauding this nice family, his antagonism with the younger twin who refuses to accept him, and his growing feelings for the sister that he can never reveal.

The author manages to resolve all these plot threads to the reader's satisfaction, and the boy even ends up with the girl.

What novel is this?

This is a short story about a girl who goes to visit one of her relatives. Upon arriving she meets a very unsavory character who intends to kill her, except at the last minute a stranger saves her.

Would this story be Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier?

Think shorter story and directed at a younger audience. Also, the girl carries with her a piece of clothing she's particularly proud of.

I wish I could take credit for this, but I can't. I believe the Man nailed it: Little Red Riding Hood.

I should be beaten for not getting *that* one.

This is an advice book that treats many different subjects. This book was written so long ago that nobody knows who wrote it, and the question of it's authorship is controversial. In fact, the book was probably written by many people over time. Some of the book's authors appear to have written their contribution to the book in terms of a fanciful story or metaphor. Others wrote in deadly earnest. This book has been translated into many different languages, and people sometimes become very emotional or even violent when discussing this book and what it means. This book has had a profound affect on Western civilization.
