Heh, once in a while I luck out. Meanwhile, here's Neil Young doing
Living With War

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Best Protest Songs (4/26/2011 10:11:21 AM)

One of my favorite bands, The Grateful Dead, doing "Morning Dew" at Winterland 1974.

This song is basically about the aftermath of nuclear war. The author, Bonnie Dobson, wrote it after she had just watched "On The Beach". It's open to a lot of interpretation. I think of the "Morning Dew" as nuclear fallout.

I knew someone would come up with some Dead sooner or later.

How about some JJ:

I've met kids at the open mics I go to that have no idea who JJ or Grace Slick are. I'm trying to put a band together, and the first song, first set is gonna be "Combination of the Two" by Big Brother & the Holding Compay (Janis' first band). It's a rocker. It's not a protest song, though. Maybe I'll link to it anyway.

Laughs
I'm an old school deadhead, but they weren't much for protest songs. They intentionally tried to be apolitical.
Rage Against The Machine though....
Here they are covering Bruce

Leonard Cohen, doing his Everybody Knows:

Well then here's a live version of Janis doing "Combination of the Two" at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967. They were pretty crude onstage.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LALqJzmjnaA&feature=related

I much prefer the studio version. It's one of my favorite tunes ever. It was playing when I went to my very first "hippie" party back in 1969, wow what a groove that was, so it's got some nostalgic meaning for me. Plus it's just a kick ass rocker.

Fantastic pick....I lived in Ohio at the time, not that far from Kent State.

This one is definitely bringing some memories back.

I graduated from Kent 20 years after this happened but it was, and still is, a contentious issue on campus with protests and counter-protests every May 4th.

When I was there the big issue was over the memorial, which finally did get built.

And to this day you have many who will defend the actions of the National Guard troops firing live rounds at unarmed students.

I love the baseline on "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier". Serpentine, sinuous, seductive, sexy sound.
