A billion web searches from all over the world reveal that what used to be considered perverse or kinky is really not so unusual after all, and that sexual deviance may be more about puritanical societal perceptions than reality.

A new book, "A Billion Wicked Thoughts: What the World’s Largest Experiment Reveals About Human Desire," unveils what lies behind the screen, and its surprising findings may set a lot of vanilla thinkers into more adventurous territory, or could at least help some be more open-minded. Or it may reinforce those who think the world is going to hell. Who knows.

The article continues here.

An excerpt I particularly like: We now know, for example, that men seek out penises almost as often as they seek out vaginas. We know that women virtually never pay for online porn. We know that men search for overweight women three times as often as they search for underweight women. We know that women around the world enjoy romantic and erotic stories about two men. We know that virtually all of clinical psychology's ideas about the prevalence of various fetishes (paraphilias in the literature) are completely and embarrassingly wrong.

I can't imagine having to look at all the sites they investigated. It would be enough to turn anyone celibate.

I question each of these conclusions....

"We now know, for example, that men seek out penises almost as often as they seek out vaginas."

This is just silly.   I have never heard of any research to suggest that 50% of the male population is gay/bisexual.    It may be true to say that vagina is used a search term as frequently as penis by men, but I'm pretty perverted and I couldn't tell you the last time I used either as a search term.

"We know that women virtually never pay for online porn."

Interesting.   What is the percentage of women who access free porn on-line? What about women who purchase/rent porn from non-online sources?   Does this tidbit have any meaning outside of marketing?

"We know that men search for overweight women three times as often as they search for underweight women."

Again, how was this determined?   Underweight women are a norm and don't really have a category unto themselves while BBW is often a category.   If they were given the same advertising results might differ.

"We know that women around the world enjoy romantic and erotic stories about two men. We know that virtually all of clinical psychology's ideas about the prevalence of various fetishes (paraphilias in the literature) are completely and embarrassingly wrong.
"

WOW......These folks "know" a lot.   Too bad they seem to have slept through the classes that discussed researcher bias.

If I were to lose my Google Images privileges tomorrow, that would have to be amended to read "twice as often."

Since they probably used mining techniques and data gathering software, it would be highly doubtful (and not humanly possible) to have *looked* at all those sites.

I don't know if the study can be applied to the general population, given the number of people without computers still, and what the percentage not captured is, if a dude isn't seeking anything pervier than virgins.

I do know, that in my experience, since learning about kink, a greater percent of "bisexual" men, approach me. Most of them, with particular exhuberance about the potential of being made to suck cock, as an act of submission. Something I've never had as a kink of mine, on my profile, at any point. M

Y'all ain't seen my "special directories" some of which aren't even plugged in to a computer. But I assure you I have absolutely no attraction to other males. Hard to avoid them though, porn is a bit difficult to find without it. Lotsa guys strapped up or down, shit like this. But in those cases it is not that I want to do that to them, or have them to me. Now a Woman on the other hand.....

How this would work out in a LTR is a different story. I would put up with it because she has to have her day because I am simply a real SOB to live with.

And like chastity belts, I used to have a huge fetish for them. I never wanted a guy to put me in one and tease me, he ain't got the right equipment.

Really what I search for on the internet is not all that indicative of my interests. It's possible that this is true of others, which would slew the data. Go figure, if data were accurate and interpreted correctly we wouldn't have half the fucking problems we have on this planet.

I means if I look for Gay shit sometimes, that doesn't mean I'm Gay. I look for Lesbian shit, and I certainly am not a Lesbian. But for about fifty grand or so............

Who said anything about gay/bisexual? You made that assumption. If you'll click the link, you'll find that straight men check out other men. You may find the answers to your other assumptions as well.

I have not as yet read the book, though I am excited about doing so, thank you for the link,  Cali.

The writers are well known and well respected researchers (yes, I checked) so I wouldn't toss their statistics out the window quite so easily. When I do read the book, I will be extremely interested in learning their research methodology for this study.

I can tell you as a straight female I have never searched for the term "penis", but I have searched the term "vagina" because I own one. the word penis is the term a doctor would use for the male appendage. It would be more revealing if they said men searched for the word "cock" more than they searched the word "pussy"...

One of the things that struck me about this article is about one of the authors being with the Department of Homeland Security.

Fair enough... Your point that is. That is why I only wrote of my experience, because I didn't want to generalise too much, though I ain't free of the humal affliction myself. M

People do not google words specifically to get their rocks off. People do searches to see if something they have experienced is normal, to have a chuckle (omg have you seen this?) or out of outright curiosity. I'm not sure any of those equate kinky.

Just to address some of the highlighted above, I don't think it's so much that 50% are either gay or bisexual.  However, we're talking about things that folks check out on the net, so you have to include those folks who are curious or hetero-flexible as well.

Personally, I happen to think folks are fooling themselves if they really believe the percentages of females interested in same sex interactions are really so much higher than that of males.  The only way that could be true would be if it were tied somehow to the X chromosome where women have two and males only have one.

Rather, it's just that females have the advantage to males in this area because female bisexuality has become socially accepted quicker than that of males.  If the acceptance was the same, you'd probably see those numbers even out a bit.

As to women who enjoy watching two males, I've been saying that for years.  Why would what women want to watch for their erotica be any different than that of men unless it was because of the societal influence?  The porn industry is making a killing by including scenes of two women together to appeal to men.  What's the logical explanation of women not wanting to see two men together for the same purpose?

OK, I am an expert in dicks.  Ask me how I know.

If men are looking at men on the net it is because they wanna see how they stack up in the leviathan schlong department.

Women don't spend alot for porn, they don't need to.  But to say they don't buy porn is to say that they are androgynous asexual beings.

I am the keeper of my family secrets, and aint going to tell most of them to you.  Why me?  I just got that fuckin cosmic sign hanging around my fucking neck  Tell me everything you never tell anyone.  I actually hate it, but am artfully silent on the subject.

However this is innocuous so I will say it.

My mother and father used to lay abed and peruse playboy magazines and some 'german' magazines and whatnot. My father bought, but my mother looked.

Why ?

Kinsey said and pretty much proved, we are on a sliding scale of absolute heterosexual to homosexual beings.

I believe my mother was bisexual in velleity only.  In the strict sense of velleity (look it the fuck up).
Her major goals, I believe were:
See what was turning my dad on, and what she could imitate.
See what the competition was doing, and how she stacked up.
Giving my father license to be guilt free about his desires and fantasies.
Gleaning some ideas of her own.

And probably in that order.

I mean, we all look at this as kinky and vanilla. what is kinky, what is vanilla?   thats a sliding scale too, and I doubt very many are piled up on the absolute vanilla point of the scale.
