She was farting up a storm at work and was afraid of getting fired; she worked in a small store and some of the customers would walk into the area where she had just cut loose...and they would bolt out of the store. Using those chloraphyll (sp?) pills that reduce stink from urine and bm didn't do anything for the stench from gas, nor did the volume get reduced by OTC gas meds.
So I had her make a food and snack (drinks included) diary, and through eliminating one thing from her diet for four days and then letting her have it on the fifth found out that she had a bowel intolerance...for coffee. I had her switch to a coffee substitute and she stopped with the Tic Tacs.
She was doing the Tic Tac thing daily for about a year before I found out, and experienced no side effects. I never asked her if it burned or how badly. From what I can remember, mom used to put one spearmint Tic Tac up her arse about an hour before going to work and it would "clean her out" AND her farts that day were indeed "a clean, fresh explosion of mint."
We would go into gales of laughter while singing that jingle in the car. [:D] See, after work, sometimes she would want me to drive her to the mall so...she would insert a second one for the trip. Every time she farted, my little boy would start singing...
