I must have a different definition of 'friend' that everybody else.

Most generally, I am not going to want to rape pillage and plunder, someone that is, just a friend....

Well... there are a small handful of people, but overall, yeah, friends only. ;)

C'mon.  Who in their right mind would attempt to own someone without knowing if the person is a meth addict, a kleptomaniac, a serial killer, or just a nasty person?

Either someone clueless or desperate.  Doesn't matter.  Block, hide, delete.
Steven, I didn't know this was a new translation for pushy. Of course, I agree with you, if this is what pushy usually means, though I thinking more along the lines of "forward."

if I am getting to know someone I am going to know rather quickly if I want to know them better or not at all.
This has usually been my experience as well. I've felt terrible on a few occasions, when I've emailed, and spoken on the phone for 2-4 months, than met, and I've felt no chemistry at all. For this reason, I like to meet, and get that initial "should we even try" out of the way.

I treat people online, like people I meet on the street, and am generally not afraid of people; I can usually feel if something is profoundly "off" fairly quickly, and usually back off as gently as I can. M
