Hello.. Happy Monday

Hope this is not to vanilla.. I never know if I should post on certain subject on this forum.

I am a college student [8|n]and I recently was given an assignment of doing the Target Market segmentation of Google.

I'm gathering up the information that I am going to need which is quite a lot., the last questions is:
What would I tell Google to improve it ?
I personally think that Google is doing fine all these years and cant really think of improvements.

Would You care to share yours, if any?

sorry, I won't site where I've received the information: names and sites will be left out.[:D]

Thank you
SBG

"sorry, I won't site.... "

Cite.

Anyway, improving Google is a pretty tall order. I would say that their newsgroup access (Usenet) sucks. They call it Google groups when these things were around before they were in diapers. Usenet has been around for a long time, if you're familiar with it you can see Google's failings in that area. I really can't think of anything else though.

Don't CITE information in your paper about what SITES you found things on.

Google Scholar should allow us to actually read the research and not limit us to abstracts only or a 2 sentence description.

Google doesn't allow me to choose a language - instead it automatically uses the main language of the IP address. People who travel are seriously screwed. Google's blog - same problem. I can't even read commands on my blog (and other services) because I can't read the language. Give us the language option and stick with it (SAME issue with Facebook by the way)

Can we please have an easy link (in English) that tells us what the cool pix are on different days? Also, can we have access to the pix from other areas of the world?

Please please please better translations in the translator - they do have a wonderful listing of languages, though!

Where can I find an address to lodge a complaint?

Also, have you seen this article? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/02/google-ftc--probe_n_856286.html

Good luck with your work,
sunshine

Some of these may actually be at least partially rectifiable:

Yes, see Google Doodles.

You should be able to set an interface language on the Google Preferences page.

There are product-specific support pages, each with a forum. Some products also have other feedback mechanisms, e.g. Chrome's feedback page, Gmail's suggestions page, etc.

Google Scholar does link to full articles where possible, but the underlying issue is that many academic publications are not free. Providing a centralized index of multiple databases is one thing, but violating copyright (Google Books debates aside) or shelling out for everyone in the world to have full access to sources behind paywalls aren't particularly realistic options for Google.

On the original topic: What Google could do better is a pretty broad topic, and there are many different segments and perspectives to answer that question from. Are end users the only view you're interested in? Advertisers, public policy makers, privacy advocates, content rights owners, company shareholders, internet service providers, web developers, Android device manufacturers, various governments – all of them are going to have different ideas, sometimes opposed, about how Google could "improve" things. Also, Google is involved in a fairly wide range of different areas, each with some of their own issues. Are you focusing on any particular aspect of their business? If not, it might make sense to think about narrowing it down some.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing more improvements with stuff like this from them: What we're driving at. Probably not one of their core competencies, and not one with an immediate market… but still more interesting than another evolutionary improvement to search, at least to me.

This doesn't tell me what is on TODAY's google - only for special days. Also, when I put my cursor on the doodle, it comes up in Korean. I don't even know what to look for, what to search for on google because they won't let me read it. It's all in Korea even though my preference is in English and even though I'm on Google.com (not google.co.kr).

Yeah, I have English set up as my preference. It doesn't work. It still comes up as Korean any time I re-start my computer. Everyone I know who is an expat has the same problem - and it is the same problem all over the world.

That's helpful, thanks... I didn't see where I could actually lodge a complaint, and my questions aren't on their list. But I'll keep looking. (This is not the first time I've put these questions up somewhere).

Fair enough. I wonder if there is a way to link through my university, though. I can use my school's library system, but it's in Korean! If I could link via google (in English), it would make life much easier. I do use the ERIC system, but it often doesn't have what I need in other languages (like Spanish/Russian, etc.). This one is no big deal, but I figured I could ask!

Thanks for the info!

Ishtarr -> RE: Google: (5/4/2011 5:18:16 AM)

I would love, like sunshine, if it was easier to switch languages.
I've never had the problem she has of being stuck with a language I can't read, but on a regular basis, I use both the .com .be .nl .co.uk and the .de version of Google, because they all give different search results.
I would love it if Google had an easy way of flipping between them, without having to retype the URL and the search parameter.
Something like Wikipedia has when it comes to looking up articles in the different languages (which I use a lot too and works awesome) would be great.

Ishtarr -> RE: Google: (5/4/2011 5:25:34 AM)

Oh, and I would also enjoy having easier filter option when it comes to the type of website I'm looking for.
Like for instance the ability to only search for newspapers, or only for blogs, or to leave forums where that topic is discussed out of the searches, or to include or exclude shopping sites and so on.
The way you set the parameter searches now to accomplish that could be streamlined and made more intuitive.
