The Obama doctrine, and its implications. - 5/2/2011 6:15:57 PM

Bush introduced the Bush Doctrine years back.  Basically it said that if the US considers another nation to be an imminent threat, it will attack militarily.  Subsequently, this was put into practice in Iraq - a nation which posed no direct threat, but which we invaded based on (take your pick) - poor intelligence, or ignored good intelligence.

Obama has not officially declared it, but based on the recent assassination and the Somali pirate operation, his style is becoming evident.

1. Make damn sure that you have a clear target, preferably an unsuspecting one.
2. Send a small, crack team to do a surgical, precision operation.

Notice how he just nominated an intelligence head to head up DoD.  The message is clear - intelligence is a vital part of warfare, possibly more important than numerical superiority.

The implications:
Hardware manufacturers must be scared.  Elite tactical units need small weaponry.  Tanks especially will not be needed much.
Data crunchers and number analysts will be in demand.  Foot soldiers, not so much.
The Pentagon budget could be reduced.  Small forces are cheaper than massive operations.

Sounds pretty much like the same style terrorists use. Except that terrorists use human bombers, but other than that...

Fire fighting fire?

I think that Obama was a little naive right off the bat. He is not the first president to be in that spot. After a while reality sets in and presidents do what they have to do for the good of the country. As I said in another thread, he has high marks in my book where the security of our country is concerned.

As much as I've criticized Obama for his poor leadership lately, I have to give him a lot of credit for this. I'm very impressed with the way this went. Sounds like it was letter-perfect, right from Square One.

I very much admire the way he's handling this stuff. Exactly the way it ought to be done, in my opinion. Identify your target, make absolutely sure you're right - then shoot him in the head, have a snack, and go to bed early. Get up tomorrow and go on about your business. Nicely done, and it's damned gratifying to finally see a president who's got the balls to do things that way. Maybe I've been underestimating him.

Keeping this thing quiet was the hard part. The Seals doing their job was the easy part.

I would much rather have my country be respected for it's ideals...but we know that there are those who do not do so....in those cases my hope would be that we are ,as a nation ,respected for our sense of purpose when called on to defend ourselves and those ideals.....The operation that was just so successfully run will go a lot further towards that eventuality than any half baked invasion...even one using overwhelming force and all of the technological wizardry the U.S. military can bring to bear.
This President has much to be proud of.....these intelligence analysts have much to proud of,the Seals that executed the mission have much to proud of.
We all have much to proud of when we think of those who serve us....in uniform and out.

I think that this country has only one ideal. FREEDOM..I also think that most of us think that the rest of the world should also be free. I'll never see it in my life, but you never know.

Perhaps that is your problem Servant.....you have somehow missed the message ...we have many ideas...and more than a few ideals.
It must suck to be you....missing out on so much that your country stands for....all because you closed the book after the one idea was broached

I'll be very curious to learn at exactly what point the Pakistani government was "consulted" about this. I'm guessing - and hoping - that it was something along the lines of, "Hello, Mr. Zardari? Barry here. Salaam a a'laykum... say, you know those helicopters you hear? That's us finding bin Laden all by ourselves. I'm sure you'll understand why he didn't have time to thank you on the way out. Bye now; and fuck off, by the way."

This,to me will be very interesting....how hard will we go about in finding the truth to the "what did Pakistan know and when did they know it ?" question.
And how much will our gov't allow us to know about these findings?
Knowing the public outcry should it become clear that Osama was being protected by one of our erstwhile allies....will arms get bent and accommodations reached without us,the public, being given a clear and full accounting of the investigatio n?

This is one of my concerns....do we soft toss the questions that need to be asked out of concern for their nuclear arsenal....and suppose we find out that his presence was known ,tolerated and even aided all the way by the highest seats of power in Pakistan....how do we react to double dealing like that from such an erstwhile ally?

Nope.  The Pakistanis were notified after it was all over.  Obviously, Obama was concerned that one of them might have tipped off OBL.

He's been trying, except those shitheads you so dearly want to meet in airport bathrooms, like Paul Ryan, and John Boehner, and Rick Santorum, keep wanting to fuck seniors and make the rich and corporations pay zero taxes.

Ryan: "Oh Noes! Budget crisis! Give Defense more money, and cut taxes on the rich! And, Oh yeah, let's make poor seniors pay an extra $500 a month for insurance!"
