Actually I think he was referring to the fact that she didn't immediately quit because someone said they didn't like what she was doing.

I understand that,  but it is what it is.

It's an actress seeking self promotion.  Controversy? Even better self promotion and attention.

Those people are not posing nude for playboy in order to give men hard-ons, and getting paid for it.

I think death threats are always wrong, but at the same time, how many people pose nude proclaiming they are Christians?

She did not pose for Playboy....and I am sure there are many Christians that would find her behavior distasteful....

This Lady looks hot.Why do some Muslims cultures want to make such beautiful Women wear robes and headscarfs to cover their body?Thats what happens when religous nutjobs run the show.Just note, that is ANY religous extremist at that.

One of the most beautiful women I have ever seen was a Persian girl. She is just gorgeous, really. She is kinda an elitist little bitch, but beautiful nonetheless.

gothikbutterfly -> RE: Muslim Actress Reportedly Receives Threats for Playboy Pictorial (5/4/2011 8:51:44 AM)

Of course Christians would find anything beyond the ends of their own noses distasteful. That is why I am not one. I am a pagan and have my own set of religious and societal values.

juliaoceania -> RE: Muslim Actress Reportedly Receives Threats for Playboy Pictorial (5/4/2011 9:11:56 AM)

My point is that posing nude while publicly discussing your faith in a religion that frowns on such displays is a bit uncouth, and one cannot be surprised if they receive a backlash from such behaviors... now death threats are not excusable, but that doesn't make her right in what she did either, which is to use her faith as a controversy to gain her fame.... If I were a Muslim it might bother me.

No, but she did pose nude, and made a very public big deal about her faith.

AFAIK no Christian groups made death threats against her.

Then next time be more specific.

I don't think, btw, their purpose is creating hard-ons, but rather, the getting paid part.

But here you go--Christian posing nude for playboy:

I think the hijab is very becoming...but there are standards and then there are standards... If my daughter were to dress improperly for school she would be sent home. That is one standard... Some Muslim women are beaten with whips and doused with acid for showing an ankle... that is another standard.

There is a difference.

FR -
The place where I draw a line around cultural dress choice is around safety.

High heels - not safe ... difficulty to walk/run in, easy to twist an ankle, terrible foot problems down the line - somewhere on the same continuum as the foot binding in China.

Hijab - not safe... women in KSA do not get the vitamin D they need because they are not exposed to the sun.

Both of these - each can be worn for certain amounts of time, in certain instances without harmful effects. It is the long term that is questionable.

Yeah, about as becoming as a fumigation tent.

Aneirin -> RE: Muslim Actress Reportedly Receives Threats for Playboy Pictorial (5/4/2011 4:07:36 PM)

The lady in question is Turkish, why, that is half European at least, and more so when Turkey becomes a member of the EEC. But I do think it wise for any that seek to bare all, not to mention religion, be it past or practising, so as to leave the fuddy duddies to their pure thoughts.

But in this situation, as the OP said; reportedly

Now, why would something come to light to hit the US that is reportedly, could it be because of the US largely negative interest in Muslims, if so whoever let this story out, what is their interest ?

If it is the lady herself, maybe she seeks a possible better life in the west, where her obvious assets will be appreciated for a while until the next exhibit comes along to butt the lady into obscurity, for that has happened too many times, yet people don't learn, but then maybe it is worth the short burst of interest and all that it brings, perhaps a life lived than never lived at all.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Muslim Actress Reportedly Receives Threats for Playboy Pictorial (5/4/2011 4:26:51 PM)

Aneirin -
No, she's GERMAN of Turkish descent. Not really Turkish anymore. Kind of like... you know... American of Irish descent. Not really Irish anymore.

Aneirin -> RE: Muslim Actress Reportedly Receives Threats for Playboy Pictorial (5/4/2011 4:37:54 PM)

Then those who condemn her have no cause, unless they wish to police all of any decent, in which case it opens them to ridicule for people do have the right to move on from their ancestry. Now of those that emmigrate elsewhere, the question must be asked, why is it they run from their origin, perhaps a better life is that much of a draw, but life as everyone knows, is what we make it, it is down to us as an individual to make the best of ourselves as we think we can be.

Religion as I see it should be an institution that has no prisoners, that being people can come and go as suits their personal wish and what a person is outside of their religious belief is for them to decide and be of no interest to the religious police, as anything else just smacks of oppression, and perhaps the reason why many leave their religious origins.

But then as I am kind of negative towards religions, I uphold anyone's right to escape religious oppression.

If its a personal choice that the lady wants to wear the hijab,I see nothing wrong with that.I am talking about cultures that force women to wear the hijab against their will.As for the body is a temple, your right.I wasn't trying to imply that they should get naked like this 1 lady did for the enjoyment of men and some women. They should have that choice though,to wear or not wear what they want. Not to be forced to be treated as less than human. It didn't work good for America when women were treated unfairly here and it can't shouldn't work anywhere else.

What if a Muslim is "forced" to wear a hijab based on cultural standards? So what? We have our own cultural standards. Women are forced to wear certain clothes based on the standards wear you live. You don't seem to be denouncing those. Or hadn't you noticed?

How is wearing clothes being treated as less than human? How many animals do you see running around in clothes?

Do you really think that American women are not treated unfairly? And why should YOUR AMERICAN standard be the standard for other places? Perhaps really what should happen is that in the USA, people should adopt the standards of other places. It is no different than what you are saying. Who are you, to put YOUR norms / values / culture as the ONE that others ought to follow. Who is the USA to do that? This is one of the reasons the USA is SOOOOoooo reviled in the world. This kind of "our way is the ONLY way" arrogance ... the rest of the world hates us because of it.

What makes you think that just because something doesn't work in one place that it can't work in another? That is pretty narrow minded.

Finally, the woman in the article - the GERMAN woman that you are ogling is NOT required to wear a hijab. Even in TURKEY (that's her heritage, not her citizenship) women are not required to wear the hijab. I believe you are thinking of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In case you don't realize it, KSA is on a DIFFERENT CONTINENT.

Considering what the hijab is in Afghanistan and many other muslims countries I see wearing it in the west is no different from wearing a T-shit with the slogan "Support The Kuu Klux Clan" emblasoned on the front or any other form of support for a disgusting racial group. That would be perfectly legal in my country. I find any kind of support for oppression on racial, sexual or any other matter utterly disgusting.

Secondly, there is nothing "nutjob" about wearing the hijab. Many MANY women CHOOSE to do so because they want to be seen as people rather than women, as thoughtful, interesting, intelligent people instead of sex objects. Women in Western society are judged by their looks. One of the ways some women counter that narrow POV is to cover themselves, to celebrate some other part of themselves.

ETA: I've had long, in-depth conversations with the Muslim women I have lived with, worked with, and count as my friends. The narrow, Western POV does not take into a number of factors - a couple of which I note above. While there are people who do abuse their power and use this particular piece of clothing as a tool of their oppression, not everyone who wears the hijab is being oppressed. In fact, many many people feel it gives them greater freedom. I for one would not want to push my cultural / religious standards on someone from another culture / religion. To put your spin on an issue disregards a myriad of other points of view.

sunshine
