Umm, Soylent Green was based on a Harry Harrison novel- Make Room, Make Room last time I checked.

Heinlein's brilliant allegory of Stranger in a Strange Land is a retelling of the myth of Jesus- which of course brings up the question of if synthetic human flesh is available- wouldn't the Catholics like it instead of crackers? Why bother with transubstantiation if you can have something a lot closer?

Sam,

The cannibalism also comes up in The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, in the form of the "Walker Evans Society." The time corps actually changes that part of history in order to recruit Col. Campbell.

Would I try vat grown long pork? Sure, with the help of something aged in a charred oak barrel. Couldn't be worse than steamed snail. I just can't imagine that anything from the Frankenfood meat counter would be something I'd want to put on my grill. I don't even like farm-raised salmon.

I agree that the "ethics" and "morality" are rationalizations of an instinctive squick.

Hi Aylee

I either forgot that one or never knew it. I'm not sure I ever finished that one of Heinlein's- I think Friday was his last good book.

In terms of movies- wasn't the line from Eating Raoul Try the cock (said in a proper British accent)

Rocky Horror- Probably my favorite line....Ahh, Meatloaf AGAIN.......

If you have to have a limb amputated for gangrene I would advise against eating it post-op.

However, if it's been amputated due to trauma, well, bon appetit!!

I'm hoping it'd be trauma related, it seems more likely. Or if I get a bit disabled and a limb becomes useless I'll have it voluntarily lopped off.

I cannot imagine eating the brain of ANYTHING. I do not eat ANY offal.

Just the muscles, veins, flab, skin, hair follicles, ligaments, tendons, glands, connective tissues, and blood - collectively referred to as the animals' "meat" - which you were raised to eat. Anything else, to you at least, is "disgusting". But certainly not the parts your parents fed you as a kid. Those are normal and tasty! ;)

On April 21, 2008, PETA announced a $1 million X-Prize style reward for the first group to successfully produce synthetic meat that is comparable to and commercially viable against naturally sourced meat products.

First .. PETA prove once again what cheap cocksuckers (Yes, I have a bias in no uncertain terms not because of their alleged fondness for animals, but because of the cruelty they've visited upon them in certain instances like in 1986 when they didn't understand the dynamics of releasing primates into the the new england winter in mid january).

But a million bucks to develop a food technology? Buncha public relations bullshit and nothing more.

As far as eating human flesh though, two things come to mind. I was in a high school in R.I. that was absolutely gaga about soccer and I think because they were speaking to Brown University students, our Athletics department were able to get one of the guys who survived that Uruguayan flight that went down in the early 70s. I remember this guy who had a rep for weird shit asking them what eating people was like and if "it tasted like pork". And I remember him saying "not like any pork I'd ever want to eat again". And he went on to comment that it tasted kind of gross.
Now besides that, there's one thing to think about (and i suppose a solution could be reached... but then again WHY?) but because of the identical dna/rna shit going on in the "meat" by mere virtue of it's "source" the floodgates of a whole new world of food-born pathogens opens up. Shit that cowflesh or chickenflesh could never introduce to our system would be rather perfectly encapsulated and ready to infect  the first unlucky person to either purposefully or accidentally prepare "Dude  Tar tar".
Food for thought[:D]

I think we are missing one moral point. How many people here have already eaten human? You know a little baby battery mixed with some fingernails or something.... [:D][8D]

Oh, the whole idea is distasteful to me... I just figured the ethics piece was pretty much a point that was out the window since the argument presented is sort of  "what if it came from a petri dish?".
Personally, if I want something to hit my table out of a petri dish I want it to be based on Kobe Beef

Oryx and Crake covers this territory; one of the labs makes this weird looking chicken-like life form that generates nothing but nubs that are good for chicken nuggets.

I have no doubt they could get in vivo stuff to taste right, given the state of artificial flavors nowadays, but unless they work the muscle, I don't see how the texture will work properly.

Geez people, I know the economy is bad, and I must admit I joke about eating the politicians and bankers first when food shortages arrive, but this is a pretty morbid subject don't you think?

At least now I have a long list of people not to invite over for a sleep over party, and who not to let into my house in the case of a real economic collapse. Thanks for the fair warning. Maybe you should all put a ,H after your names...for Hannibal.

dovie -> RE: Let's Talk About ... Eating "Long Pig" ... (9/14/2011 6:57:25 PM)

Excellent topic Firm and my response is this: It is inevitable as is transhumanism. Man's strongest instinct is survival or so it is said. We could go down the rabbit hole on that one. If long pig is what is needed for that survival, it's a done deal.  Disclaimer: This is my opinion only and I don't claim it to be the opinion of others.

We are steamrolling forward in cutailing some of the diseases that would have thinned the human herd. Over population is such that goverments have had to intervene. We will need more that one more La Grippe to even out the balance between people and resources.  Anyhoo, this is too much deep doo-doo for me this evening. lol.  Going back to my corner.

So how about poop burgers? I know this is Technically off topic, since this meat was originally part of a human being, but here you go. Steak out of sewage, how science fiction is that? http://www.digitaltrends.com/international/japanese-scientists-creates-meat-out-of-feces/

Actually, I do not eat much meat at all. No glands (that is offal). And yes, most of that stuff is disgusting. It is not an ethics issue. It just tastes horrible.

Except that 'offal,' as a word, has been around since the 14th century.

For those who insist that eating anything human is a revolting idea (particularly the males dominants here), please remember that the next time you pout and wonder why your sub gags when swallowing.  [;)]
