Outlier2 -> American Original, Aerospace Designer Burt Rutan Has Retired (5/3/2011 8:49:45 PM)

Some people build things that work well but they are uninspired or, worse yet, ugly.
Lots of people build things that are beautiful, but don't work.

Burt Rutan designed beautiful planes that work very well.

"Five of his planes now hang in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, including the Voyager, which in 1986 became the first airplane to fly around the world without refueling, and SpaceShipOne, which in 2004 became the first private rocket plane ever to put a man into space."

"In 1974, he moved to Mojave "because it was cheap enough" and opened Rutan Aircraft Factory on a $15,000 loan from his father to develop do-it-yourself kits for hobbyists to build small planes.

He set up shop at Mojave airport. At the time, the airport was a remnant from the days when it was a World War II Marine Corps air station.

In 1975, Rutan found success with his VariEze (pronounced "very easy") aircraft design, which looks like a rocket ship from the "Jetsons" cartoon series. Four years later, he developed the Long EZ, an aircraft that had an endurance of 2,010 miles — more than twice the distance of the VariEze.

Both aircraft, made of composite fiberglass material, are simple to assemble and safe to fly, and have a top speed of about 200 mph, said Tom Poberezny, president of the Experimental Aircraft Assn. "He's the Pied Piper of aviation," he said. "The Rutan brand is one of efficiency and innovation. When you land a Rutan-designed plane, everybody looks."

In 1982, he formed Scaled Composites to design research aircraft for the government and commercial customers. Rutan maintains that the company has been profitable from the start.

His work drew headlines in 1986 when his brother, Dick, and co-pilot Jeana Yeager flew the Rutan-designed Voyager on a nine-day epic flight around the world."

"In 2004, a team led by Rutan won a $10-million purse called the X Prize to send someone into space twice in a week without government money."

They had dancing sideburns to escort him at the party a couple months ago.

Truly an amazing mind and vision. His legacy will last a very long time, but we'll see how he does at staying retired.

Thanks for the mental image of the dancing sideburns.  I also agree
with you that this is not the type of man to be content going into
veggie mode for long.  Even if his future projects are not public I
would bet he will be up to something.

Using a canard like that can get you some extreme maneuverability and an enhanced flight envelope, but it is dangerous. If it were good for even semisonic speed he would have been heralded as one of the greatest, but it just doesn't work at high speeds.

Now if the world wasn't so anal, and people had these things they could be a boon to transportation. Build one that can take people fifty miles to the jobsite, away from traffic and everything, using that third dimension (altitude), you would have something. But the governmant would fuck it all up because in a plane you need a flight plan in triplicate, your Grandmother's maiden name, sign over your first born son and submit a flight plan in triplacate accurate to the inch to go from Ohio to Ohio. But if you happen to be terrorists you can do whatever you want and the FAA won't notice.

Sorry, I'm just in one of those moods. And to prove it I'll let that stand.

It's hard to argue with Rutan as a brilliant designer- and btw, he's another model builder as was Dick. His airplanes often had some quirks though....

That shot of Voyager- wasn't on its around the world flight. On takeoff the wings drooped so much from being filled with fuel that the winglets got sandpapered off on the runway so they flew without them. Burt didn't let Jeanna fly the airplane much- it was just too twitchy. That flight speaks volumes about their endurance- it's bad enough to be airborne for a week, but there wasn't any room to stretch and no showers. I don't wanna think what that airplane smelled like when they landed.

Another airplane not mentioned was the Quickie- where never has anyone gone so fast on 18 hp- but if you got the airplane in a rainstorm, the water beading on the front canard decreased its lift enough so that the nose got very, very heavy.

I think Rutan also had something to do with the design of the Saab Viggen- a mean looking and performing airplane in its own right- and the first composite homebuilt he designed was the Vari Viggen IIRC. I kind of remember one showing up in a lousy Lee Majors movie....
