High inflation?

A 1.6% average inflation rate in 2010?

Now there is a topic worthy of a thread all by itself. So much money printed and dumped into the economy, such low official numbers, and such a change in what a trip to the grocery store is going to cost.

NEW YORK –

[image]http://www.tdbimg.com/files/2011/04/30/img-bs-bottom---ferguson-inflation_161145211912.jpg[/image]

The Fed may deny it, but Americans know that prices are rising. In this week’s Newsweek, Niall Ferguson takes a look at the Great Inflation of the 2010s.

“I can’t eat an iPad.” This could go down in history as the line that launched the great inflation of the 2010s.

Back in March, the president of the New York Federal Reserve, William Dudley, was trying to explain to the citizens of Queens, N.Y., why they had no cause to worry about inflation. Dudley, a former chief economist at Goldman Sachs, put it this way: “Today you can buy an iPad 2 that costs the same as an iPad 1 that is twice as powerful. You have to look at the prices of all things.” Quick as a flash came a voice from the audience: “I can’t eat an iPad.”

Dudley’s boss, Ben Bernanke, was more tactful in his first-ever press conference on Wednesday of last week. But he didn’t succeed in narrowing the gap between the Fed’s view of inflation and the public’s. I respect Bernanke. As an expert on the financial history of the 1930s, he was one of the very few people in power back in 2008 who grasped how close we were to another Great Depression. But if we’ve avoided rerunning the 1930s only to end up with a repeat of the 1970s, the public will judge him to have failed.

To ordinary Americans, however, it’s not the online price of an iPad that matters; it’s prices of food on the shelf and gasoline at the pump.

To this, the Fed has a stock response. It points to the all-urban consumer price index (CPI-U) and notes that it was up only 2.7 percent in March relative to the same month a year earlier. Strip out the costs of food and energy, and “core CPI”—the Fed’s preferred measure—is just 1.2 percent. When Google unveils its new index of online prices, it’s likely to tell a similar story.

To ordinary Americans, however, it’s not the online price of an iPad that matters; it’s prices of food on the shelf and gasoline at the pump. These, after all, are the costs they encounter most frequently. And with average gas prices hitting $3.88 a gallon last week, filling up is now twice as painful as when President Obama took office.

Sensing a threat to his hopes of reelection, the president last week called on Congress to eliminate “unwarranted” tax breaks for oil companies and set up a Justice Department task force to investigate price gouging and fraud in the oil markets. Give me a break. The spike in gas prices is the result of Fed policy, which has increased the monetary base threefold in as many years, and a geopolitical crisis in the Middle East that the president and his advisers still haven’t gotten a handle on.

I agree, the speculation in oil and foodstuffs needs to be curtailed.

Record profits for both oil multinationals and foodstuffs multinationals.

But right wingers are loathe to rein in corporations, so we are stuck with it.  See, the argument goes that Bush and righwingers were really was behind anything that could be called good in what Obama did, but he and his administration is absolutely and wholly responsible for these anti-business practices.

"Strip out the costs of food and energy." That must be nice. Is there a way working folks can do that in their budgets, too?

Its not so much speculation, mnot - thats always been there.

This is an old debate, who ever is not in the White House, seems to scream about this issue.

According to the last Fed Chairman, the reason food, gas and medical costs are not included is because it would cause to much instability with the interest rates because of how these prices tend to change on a whim.

It seems the current Fed Chairman agrees with the last one because he just gave a speech about this about 2 weeks ago, basically saying the same thing

Real0ne -> RE: The Real Rate Of Inflation - Daily Beast (5/4/2011 7:35:58 AM)

Everything is about money!  Them taking it from us because they are smarter than us.

Their little group called "legislature" decides how to fuck us and then we the dumb fuck people are too damn dumb to understand what they did, with the requirement for us as a whole fucking nation or state to have solidarity to have the capacity to change anything those fuckwads do.

The deck is stacked.  Its not like 400 of us can get together vote and change what those assholes did.

Its a stacked deck and its we the corporate guv versus we the people as a controlled group and we are not a group and they keep the records FOR US we have none of our own that shows what was sent to them.   The whole game is rigged or has become rigged take your pick

No such thing. In fact and I cited the bill, the Dems are saying Drill baby Drill on the land under lease, or lose it and we will give it to someone who will.

You have paranoid conjecture, I have cited the bill. (although it is from a hispanic democrat, so we should check his birth certificate, eh?) Try again.

"the government has changed the formula it uses to calculate inflation 24 times since 1978 "

I wonder how many times that happened to the way they calculate unemployment. Where's Ken ?

I seem to remember a moment in history, well reported to me anyway. Something about "Let them eat cake". Well this is 2011 and now it is "Let them eat ipads". Perhaps it is time for history to repeat itself.

How about median income. How about GNP, now GDP. Hell that's alot of math with which to fiddle. I remember being taught something about someone fiddling, but I guess that's been debunked. That's what we need this time, a fiddler ! Or maybe a saxophonist.

Tell whoever replaces Bin Laden to please get it right this time, target the whitehouse and pentagon only. Don't waste your time on buildings in NYC that they were probably going to tear down in a few years anyway.

Core inflation has very limited use, and is a long term statistical planning tool that has proven more accurate in predicting future inflation than measures that include food and energy. It is not used for determining increases in entitlement programs or Social Security. The only reason its discussed at all is internet bloggers know people dont know what its used for, so they use it as something to rant about.

all the 2while they nail everyones asses to the cross with monetary inflation

mnottertail -> RE: The Real Rate Of Inflation - Daily Beast (5/4/2011 2:45:40 PM)

Why would you argue that now?  You have post after post of valueless scrip and bankruptcy since 1933 and now you say we are being assaulted by some half-assed paper mechanics?

FR

As pointed out above, gas and food prices are not included in the CPI that the fed uses as determination of what monetary policy to follow for making adjustments. If you like the interest rate to be jacked up or knocked down by the same percentage as oil price fluctuations 3-5 times a month, you're welcome to it. The price of oil/gas works its way into most everything else within 2 months or so, so to account for that separately would constitute "double counting," and if you are coming back from the grocery store but still need the fed (actually the BLS) to tell you what food prices are, you might possibly be lacking in other areas too, none of which the fed or anyone else could help you with.

" the president last week called on Congress to eliminate “unwarranted” tax breaks for oil companies and set up a Justice Department task force to investigate price gouging and fraud in the oil markets. "

Oh Ho! So NOW we see why these fuckwads are coming out of the woodwork here. And pushing the spin to 'the usual suspects' of mice brain experiment rejects such as the OP. Questioning the tax payer's  gift of multi-millions per year in oil company tax breaks? and this pres. still walks around with his skull intact? If it were me, I'd have every freakin' phone call and every internet blurb that Rex Tillerson and every other oil company CEO pukes out monitored 24/7.

BTW, we just shot bin Laden. As long as we are eliminating those doing the most harm to our society, let's just keep going. Look out, Rex, and don't overlook the Navy colors on that seal before you start to pet it.

Brain -> RE: The Real Rate Of Inflation - Daily Beast (5/4/2011 9:40:41 PM)

I think inflation unfortunately is going to be much worse in the future and it will show up in the statistics. I think there's an old saying about being careful what you ask for because you might get it.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: The Real Rate Of Inflation - Daily Beast (5/5/2011 4:44:32 AM)

~FR~

Since a lot of the data on inflation has to do with actual price, in many grocery items there is hidden inflation. Cutting the size of the container down, yet selling it for the same price. An example is the old 5lb bags of sugar that are now 4lb bags. The size of canned vegatables, condiments, etc.

I read that the increase in meat prices is fueled by the increase in corn grain, that went from 2.74 a bushel to over 7.00 a bushel now. The increase comes from a high demand for corn (you can do the research into that to find out why corn is in higher demand now).

I do not look at any data other than money coming into my home, and money going out, on the necessities.
