Practicing Jews can take 'thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain' rather more stringently than Christians do. It's the opposite of a curse - they hold the full word as something too precious to be used in everyday conversation. Many names for God in Hebrew are eupemisms - they translate literally as The Word, The Name, etc.
