tweakabelle -> Did the US gave weapons grade uranium to Israel? (5/4/2011 8:17:11 PM)

It has long been known that Israel possesses a nuclear arsenal. Various reports estimate Israel has 2-400 nuclear bombs. This report by an official US Government agency, the Govt. Accounting Office (GAO) sheds light on how Israel acquired some of the weapons grade uranium.*

It appears that the transfer broke many US laws, and may have contravened the US's obligations under the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, but to date there hasn't been a single prosecution, nor is there any ongoing investigation into the scam. AFAIK this affair is not well known either in the US or overseas.

Israel is the only nuclear armed State in the Middle East. Has the US knowingly enabled this situation? Or is the US being taken for a ride by Israel, an erstwhile ally, again?

Is this clear evidence of double standards in relation to nuclear weapons proliferation? What does Washington's current trenchant opposition to Iran's alleged nuclear ambitions amount to in the light of this information?

* A complete copy of the report can be found here. Finally apologies for the shocking spelling error in the title.

The GAO says in the report that it has no information to prove a diversion... The DOE explained what happened to the material and the discrepancy... The GAO refused to believe them. The FBI did not find hard evidence of diversion either... the CIA provided what information it had and also did not find a diversion of material.

Now did it happen...could have... they do have some circumstantial evidence that there is a discrepancy in the amount of material but only if what the DOE said is wrong. If what the DOE says is true then there is no discrepancy in material.

Could Israel of covertly stolen some of this material? It is possible but I can’t see President Johnson giving support and our blessing for Israel to build nuclear weapons.

I thought that Isreal had never confirmed or denied having nuclear weapons.

I can't imagine Isreal, NOT having nuclear weapons.
I would be shocked to learn they didn't have nuclear weapons.

I'm not actually sure how to answer that.

I suggest for further reading:

THE THIRD TEMPLE'S HOLY OF HOLIES: ISRAEL'S NUCLEAR WEAPONS

It is a research paper into Israel's nuclear weapons research.

quote:

The joint venture with France gave Israel several ingredients for nuclear weapons construction: a production reactor, a factory to extract plutonium from the spent fuel, and the design. In 1962, the Dimona reactor went critical; the French resumed work on the underground plutonium reprocessing plant, and completed it in 1964 or 1965. The acquisition of this reactor and related technologies was clearly intended for military purposes from the outset (not “dual-use”), as the reactor has no other function. The security at Dimona (officially the Negev Nuclear Research Center) was particularly stringent. For straying into Dimona's airspace, the Israelis shot down one of their own Mirage fighters during the Six-Day War. The Israelis also shot down a Libyan airliner with 104 passengers, in 1973, which had strayed over the Sinai.[33] There is little doubt that some time in the late sixties Israel became the sixth nation to manufacture nuclear weapons. Other things they needed were extra uranium and extra heavy water to run the reactor at a higher rate. Norway, France, and the United States provided the heavy water and “Operation Plumbat” provided the uranium.

After the 1967 war, France stopped supplies of uranium to Israel. These supplies were from former French colonies of Gabon, Niger, and the Central Africa Republic.[34] Israel had small amounts of uranium from Negev phosphate mines and had bought some from Argentina and South Africa, but not in the large quantities supplied by the French. Through a complicated undercover operation, the Israelis obtained uranium oxide, known as yellow cake, held in a stockpile in Antwerp. Using a West German front company and a high seas transfer from one ship to another in the Mediterranean, they obtained 200 tons of yellow cake. The smugglers labeled the 560 sealed oil drums “Plumbat,” which means lead, hence “Operation Plumbat.”[35] The West German government may have been involved directly but remained undercover to avoid antagonizing the Soviets or Arabs.[36] Israeli intelligence information on the Nazi past of some West German officials may have provided the motivation.[37]

It is also rumored that Israel received weapons grade plutonium from South Africa.

Israel's nuclear arsenal was first exposed by the UK paper, The Sunday Times in 1985 here.

Israel certainly took the reports seriously - it kidnapped the source, an Israeli citizen called Mordechai Vanunu, sentenced him to a lengthy prison term (much of which was spent in solitary confinement) and still has travel restrictions and a ban on Vanunu talking to the media to this day, c25 years later.

While it is technically correct to point out that Israeli policy is to neither confirm nor deny possession of nuclear weapon, the existence of Israel's nuclear arsenal is not doubted by independent observers.

Wow... something hypocritical and illegal involved in our absurd relations with Israel?

Color me unsurprised.
