Just noticed that another new member of Collarme is requesting tribute before she will speak or meet. While the subjext of being a prodom on here has created much banter, the question I put out here is one of educating the small business owner in many of us?
What do you do to start a prodom business from your home? What are some of the basics for a staert up and how did some of the pros here get started in their endeavors? Thank you all for your consideration

From what I understand, the first thing you want to do is check your zoning. If you are truly looking to run the business in your home, you need to know whether or not that's allowed. Then, it's a matter of running it as you would another small business...advertise to your target audience, make sure that you have thing worked out to handle the client flow (I.E. parking in a residential neighborhood!), expand the business to include employees when you can. But, before you do all this, I recommend talking to the NCSF and get some advice about how to handle law enforcement and such. A little pre-emptive work with the law BEFORE opening your doors can be a good thing. Sometimes, it best that they know who you are and what you're doing upfront. A lot of police depts just have more important things to do than mess in people's kink. This isn't true for ALL though...those who live in small towns, for example, may have more problems than those in a big city.

I  prefer professional to pro, the last makes me think of what I am so far away from, its not funny.
I guess its a matter of attitude..commercial or private.
Being a private Domina I have always seen visitors in my home, special rooms just for play, but even when the Dungeon was a big CBD commercial space, I lived in it.

Attitude again, I never saw myself as a business, just enjoying an extention of myself and wonderful folk who enjoyed what I enjoyed doing.
*Wonders* paying before chat ?? mm silly, I am always amazed at where some find opportunity to get the button pushed.

With no disrespect to any of the other posters advice, I would skip the zoning issue. In probably 99% of the US its not going to be approved anyway.
Your first concern should be about physical safety. Consider all the implications of running ads, having people know where your home is, do you have children living there (if so, forget it, very very bad idea), noise factor, neighbors and so forth. You need a security plan, someone that checks in and up on you before, during and after every client.
I won't go into a room/dungeon as thats fairly obvious.
Depending on where you live check with the city about business permits. If one is required for all home business's (authors, Amway, web design etc) get a permit and state that you do something like web design. Something that would not involve any actual traffic, no chemicals, no need for parking, no need for a fire dept. inspection, etc.
This is important, PAY YOUR TAXES! The majority of people that get into trouble with home business's is tax evasion. If you ever had a problem as regards obscenity, vice, zoning etc, usually those court cases are very hard to win. Where they usually win (including  porn, the mob, etc) is federal tax issues.
Keep it simple and quiet. Respect your neighbors and their privacy and they will usually respect yours. Advise clients of no loud music when at your residence, no honking horns, no throwing trash out the window, no anything illegal, noisy, bad taste (showing up in a leather thong and a collar etc). Just advise, no demand, that they show up in an adult and mature manner.

While it is a bad idea to use one's own home, because if the police become involved they not only can search it easily but if you are convicted the DA can argue the mortgage was paid from the proceeds of the "crime" and it can be taken by the state.

However, as far as the IRS is concerned, because it is a "primary place of commerce where clients come to do business," a professional dungeon  probably would qualify for a deduction.

I had a separate location and deducted all expenses because no part of it was used for personal use.

As long as it is just you or family who lives there runs the 'business' it is allowed.  You have to watch zoning if you have employees.  Till that moment zoning allows a home based business of any nature

Ah there you are....you pro domme bashers were conspicuously absent from the "Pro Sub" thread as I mentioned there.   Double standards.

If you're going to make sure you jump into every thread regarding prodommes to make sure you educate us all about how dispicable they are, then really - make sure you don't let us have a calm rational discussion about prosubs either.

Thanks!

That may be true in totalservant's community, but it is not true in most, particularly when clients come to the house.   The reason most home businesses stay in business is that they maintain so low a profile that the neighbors are not aware that they exist.  This doesn't mean they are legal.

As soon as there is an influx of strangers, there's a good chance that a neighbor will complain and that's a bad time to find out the specifics of the zoning laws in your town.

I stand by MFM's advice.  Check the law in your community.

Actually , I was hoping this question was going to address those interested in doing professional domination and what the hurdles would be.Really was not getting into the ethical or personal views of this subject. Much like the business publications at the news stands, I was hoping  some could show the pit falls that they experienced and  what you should consder in developing  a home business.. For example , does promoting yourself here on Collar me produce a good result in reaching clients?

Well, you got good advice about checking about zoning laws.  Because you specifically phrased it as a "home business" issue, I think that's why you haven't gotten much else.  Also there have been other, more general notestreams about working as a prodom.  I'd recommend you look them up.

One thing I do strongly advise is you contact a lawyer who knows about sexual law and enforcement in your area.  It can vary widely just between towns.  A good source is to go to your local strip club or adult bookstore and ask who they use as their lawyer.  No such businesses around?  That tells you a lot!

I am with the advice on low profile. The lower the better. never raise flags and interview your clients by phone or other. In fact when advertising yourself online put your state but not your city. They can find this out when they are serious about booking an appointment.

Theres much more but I am reluctant to post it in public. Today professional domination requires jumping through many hoops. It can be done but there are far better ways to enjoy this lifestyle and be self supporting. No one knows this better then I. :)

Email me if you like. I'm just a little slow to replies these days but promise to try.

For goodness sake check the zoning laws of the community.

The last thing any of us need is another person starting a prodom or adult anything business in a location where it is illegal then trying to argue it isn't illegal. It takes away focus from other issues like privacy and consent between adults that each of us must deal with.

In my hometown, it's pretty much a given that it has to be an "under the table" endeavor. This is for one main reason.... the way the prostitution laws on the books are written.
Something as simple as charging money for a spanking here, is prostitution. If money is exchanged and there's any kind of touching going on, bet your ass our local ordinance will cover it as prostitution. Our statute even goes so far as to include if a paid client is sexually aroused, it's prostitution.
All the local zoning laws, taxes, business contracts, etc... don't matter in the least around here. You could do everything "by the book", but the first time you accept a dollar and touch a client's ass, you're engaging in an illegal activity.
This may very well explain why there are no legal Pro-Dommes in my home town.

Now, as for reality...
There are tons of girls here (and many other places) who call themselves Pro-Dommes. All that takes is a few toys and someone willing to pay. That really is all it takes to get started. Nothing more.

Check the zoning laws, yes, ok but depending on where she lives it may not matter. I'm sorry I just don't think I'd go running out and get a business license to run a home based business. When it comes to community standards it honestly doesn't matter if it's legal or not. You're life will change and even though you may not go to jail you'll have a hard road.

Openminded reconsider the prodom biz. Cultivate yourself a few good slave and create a family. If you really must work in professional domination go work at a pro dungeon or with another professional as you learn the ropes.

Most of it depends on the State,County and Town you live in.
Unfortunately there is no set Universal guidelines.

My town for instance, you can hang signs as long as they 25 feet away from the road, they can be lighted as long as the lights dont hinder drivers. You can pretty much do anything with exception of food stuff without a health inspector.Buildings under certain sizes have exemptions...again this all depends on where you live.

A lot of times you have to go to the planning board get okayed, then there is a town meeting to see if you neighbors object. Most states also require a permit, sellers permit is an example of one.

It can be very tedious and time consumming but worth it.
And to answer the other question...yes you can get things itemized,if one room is dediacted you can get a write off on it as your business office.

Of course you can always fly under the radar and get paid cash, conceal your dungeon, pay for items with cash.and a slew of other things to keep it low key.
