I love watching tourists! They're always so confused and adorable and loud and dazed and bedazzled by baubles and if you watch a gaggle from a discreet distance it's a great way to kill 10 or 15 minutes. Which nation do you think produces the most lovably dimwitted, accidentally quite wonderful tourists?

For my money, the US (USA! USA! USA!), England and Australia have to run a very close one, two, and three in terms of loud, belligerent slapstick. Americans will go to Paris to complain about the McNuggets, Aussies will tromp around a large zoo in California just to gawk at the kangaroos and complain "Those aren't good 'roos at all we got better 'roos right outside our door!" And the Brits...don t get me started on the Brits I KNOW YOU KNOW WE CALL IT AN ELEVATOR OVER HERE GODDAMNIT!!!!

Who are YOUR favorite obnoxious tourists????

That's what happens when you come from a strange and exotic land in which you're legally prohibited from pumping your own gas. Strange days, my friend, strange days.

In my experience in thehotel industry,, yeah, Americans.   Entitlement, bitch about the stupidest thing (which as a hotelier I have no control over -i.e. "the hotel is too far from downtown, you need to move it" -  yes, that is an actual \guest complaint), "there's too much traffic on the street", shit like that.   I have never gotten those complaints from anyone who lives outside of the USA.

When I travel outside the US, I try VERY HARD not to be an UGLY AMERICAN.

Oddly enough the folks from NY, and CT were less trouble.    I really did enjoy that job.

Middle eastern folks were hard to deal with-  they were sure they were being screwed and wanted to negotiate the price and service....  lol

Americans.

In Korea, one could hardly sleep for all the drunken US soldiers playing paintball in the ally-ways.

I love watching Japanese tourists. They like to take funny pictures.

Irritating because they don't seem to notice when they're in the way of traffic.

my Grandfather said to me, AGES ago, and I have since found it to be true: " learn how to say AT LEAST: please, thank you, and hello in the language of whatever country you visit... it makes all KINDS of difference in how you are perceived.. and the more you learn the better off you will be"

This is interesting. I spent two extended visits in Amsterdam a few years back and tried really hard to use the language. But whenever I did, the Dutch people (even my friends that I stayed with) would either roll their eyes or mock me, saying the Dutch phrase back to me while exaggerating my mispronounciation instead of trying to help me. Then they would just use their heavily-accented English. One girl said, 'I wish they would just use English, we do speak it, you know!'

And what was that one phrase they taught me? Oh yes, "As a finishing touch, God created the Dutch!"

Oh well, it was a beautiful country. I'd love to go back someday.

I spent more time in Antwerp than in the Netherlands. Flemish is not a language I ever acquired any knowledge of but everyone did speak some English.

In Yugoslavia, I did know a few phrases in SerboCroatian but most people wanted to practice their English with me.

But I vote for Japanese since I rarely encounter just a couple or a family, it's always a bus load coming in and all wanting service at exactly the same moment without acknowledging the fact that if the store or restaurant didn't know 40 people were going to descend at 10:10 and have to be out at exactly 12:05, they aren't going to be able to cope. Plus with those 40, there is one translator max, who also wants to shop, eat, use the ladies.

Maybe the Americans make more of an effort here, but they're no problem at all: always polite and courteous. Loud, yes, but not obnoxious - there's a difference.

No one in particular really.

Our rivals are generally seen as the Jocks and Aussies, so these are the two we tend to take most notice of.

Americans. I can't tell you how many times I've encountered mainland Americans who say "back in the states...". Hello! Where do they think they are? Hawai`i became a state in 1959! Oh! And here is a choice bit that had me almost on the floor laughing. I was on one of those shuttle bus things at the airport after I had gotten back from a visit home. A couple had gotten on and the wife says to the husband "I hope the driver speaks English". Seriously?

Japanese tourists can be entertaining, although I haven't (so far) encountered irritating other than giggling school girls, who, to be fair, are frickin' annoying no matter where they are and where they come from.

As a former New Yorker, I have to say Japan or Germany.  Neither seem to have much concept of traffic flow on crowded sidewalks/subways.

As for Jersey and the gas thing - I'm totally down with paying some of the lowest gas prices in the country to not have to get out of my car in the rain.
