It's not surprising people want change when they are frustrated with politicians and politics these days. I wonder if there have been any surveys done about how many Democrats want a third party.

52% of Republicans Want a Third Party

By Elspeth Reeve 05:54 PM ET

Fifty-two percent of Republicans want a major third party to compete with Democrats and the GOP, according to a Gallup poll released Monday. An even larger percentage of Tea Partiers, 60 percent, want a new party. The portion of Americans who want a third party has been at or above 50 percent since mid-2006, but this is the first time a majority of Republicans have felt that way since Gallup began asking the question in 2003. This is news Donald Trump can seize on--he's flirted with running as an independent once he's done flirting with running as a Republican in 2012.

The recent Gallup poll shows the clear distinction between ideological groupings and partisan groupings, providing data on where each group stands. Ratings for a third party appear higher based on ideology than they do based on party. There is fairly consistent support for a third party alternative across ideological fault lines, with 61% of liberals and 54% of conservatives expressing an open mind to the third party alternative. 60% of moderates support third parties as do 74% of Independents. But, the lower percentages amongst partisans – 47% among Republicans and 45% among Democrats – suggests both major parties are, perhaps, not too keen on offering any leverage to the competition.

The Heretic posted a great article I thought on revising the political party.  I think we need more than 3.  Like the tea party movement being a radical extension of republicans, having more than 3 parties, with the premise of distinct values to all of them, broadens our range for option.

If you vote Democrat or Republican you're throwing your vote away.

If there were a 3rd party, would it follow the lines and thinking of the Tea Party followers and if it did would there then become a 4th made up of the more extreme to the left?
Just wondering...

I wish that were true, but it isn't.  If you mean the tea party people, well....most of the tea party people voted into governors office are on the recall block right now (at least the one in florida has a petition being passed around and I signed it, for our tea party governor), for reasons like this...

I have yet, in my lifetime seen anyone other than a repub or dem elected into offices, with exception of tea partiers....and sorry, those tea party folks just don't cut it for me.

I was wondering the same thing. Along those lines, who would defect from the reigning parties to make up the new one? Im not talking about voters, but rather politicians.

I couldn't imagine just 3 parties, if ithe 3rd was the Tea Party people, I would think a 4th more liberal party might emerge in time and if not, the Democrats would dominate the national elections.
A splintered Republican party would pretty much insure both of their defeats for at least some time.

Which just goes to show what nonsense most polls are.

How people respond on political surveys is not how they respond in the voting booth.

We have had plenty of third party candidates.  How many have had any success?

We just need to all vote for the candidate who calls himself an Independent but is actually a conservative Republican.

Then the sun will shine and the birds will sing in the land of Popeye.

Our 3rd Party candidates have never really been a 3rd Party.

The Libertarians will run candidates of convenience, the Green Party ran Ralph Nader but neither have never really had a core constituency of any size.

If somehow you could equally divide the cores or the middle of both national parties perhaps they could generate enough money and people to be successful. The fringe of either party might be able to compete in certain areas or in state elections but, I doubt not nationally.

No, I think the problem is our third party candidates have generally been nutcases.

Perot, LaRouche, Nader?

I'm waiting for Alex Jones to announce his candidacy for 2012.

Why break with tradition?

I think their is a difference between fiscal conservative social moderates indicating they want a party of their own, feeling they have no place in either the Democratic or Republican party since the GOP has gone insane, and people on the fringes running for office.

Personally I think the upcoming crash and burn of the national GOP in 2012 the big money supporting them may very well decide the social warriors are simply not worth spending money on and will start backing traditional "Main Street" Republicans even if that means starting a new party. I actually was expecting it to happen before the 2012 primary but I guess I was being too optimistic.

If you are right Ken they could draw from both parties and really become a centrist political party. If that is the case they could become very viable.

What a weird article.  The huge unanswered question is, what KIND of third party is favored?  Would it be similar to a Libertarian Party?  Genuine fiscal conservatives?  Or far-right wingnuts? As is, the article simply states that 52% of the GOP is unhappy, and then omits to tell us why.

People bust on Perot, but I'd like to remind everyone that he was right about NAFTA and the "giant sucking sound"....
