I am not sure how our parents managed to raise us without all the government help people seem to think they need today. Maybe we should just hand over the kids when they are born, then a government nanny can raise them and give them back when they are 18.

I can't quite see it that way. It is something they offer, they are not required to offer anything. So we want the help educating the kids but not feeding them ? Well maybe.

Is a fast food joint fascist because they put sea salt on their fries ? Personally I don't eat the shit, I have my own sea salt and I have a nice knife with which to cut potatoes. What about NYC and their ban on certain kinds of frying oil ? I think the gov would be justified in requiring a warning that they say this shit is no good for you, but there the idea was to take the choice away from full grown persons.

Full grown people act like children. They get treated like children. How is it then logical to treat children as adults ?

Don't think I disagree too much. But in perspective, what would you like to see on the school cafeteria menu ? Soda and potato chips ? How about some of that new chip dip which doesn't have to be refrigerated because the sour cream has been replaced by hydrogenated oils ? Some squatki(sp)* for the main course and then a whole cake smothered with denatured whipped topping all over it, like about a pound each. It would be the most popular dish in school.

This shit could kill them faster than the crack dealers out in the parking lot. Not that I care all that much.

* squatki; not sure of the spelling but it is ham fat completely rendered in a pan in it's own grease until crisp. Probably can be considered poison for heart patients, and I think could be capable of producing heart patients if ingested too often. That's if you believe what "they" say.

I tend to approve of any policy that helps to improve childrens' diets in this country. I am more or less a junk food nazi, and believe all the "juice" with corn syrup additives and other crap, all the sugary cereals, in fact all the empty calorie foods marketed towards children should be banned.

I see families with children at the grocery store, their carts loaded up with high fat, high sugar and processed foods and it makes me shudder. I do not, however, follow the parents through the grocery store berating them about their bad food choices, I have mellowed in my old age.

Nothing Big Brotherish about it. nobody is saying your kid can't have chocolate or strawberry milk, the schools just aren't going to provide it. If you want to have control of what your kid has for lunch, then do it yourself.

A true sign of Big Brother...

Walmart not having a fabric/craft section.

As, since I am on the anti-Walmart pissy mood...the mobile shopping carts needs to have the batteries charged up and more carts in each store.

Pissy mood ended.

When did schools start offering chocolate milk? Not when I was in public school. Now, at prep school, a basket of drinks was brought to every classroom about 10:00. It contained one chocolate milk and one orange juice and the rest was plain milk. This meant that each of us got a chocolate milk about every two weeks. And because it was a special treat, not an everyday thing, we appreciated it more.

I rarely get in the non-BDSM discussions here due to a lack of time, but here in Wisconsin we had a vending machine selling milk in the high school cafeteria by 1961. This machine dispensed the little 1/2 pint waxed containers of whole milk, skim milk, orange drink (not real OJ) and chocolate milk for .02 cents each.

I know the price was due to a government subsidy, but I do not remember if that was state or federal. Since Wis. claims to be "the dairy state" I'm pretty sure part of that was state funded.

My memory is that there were 2 slots for chocolate milk and often one or both sold out before anything else did.

They had chocolate lowfat milk when I was in elementary school some ~30 years ago.  I am far from health-conscious in many ways, but I agree with Arpig as well.  You want to feed you child chocolate milk?  Send him to school with it.  Now, as far as ShaharThorne's comment about WalMart goes--oh Gods yes!    The local-ish one to me used to carry a decent crafting section, now even some of the 'super WalMarts' no longer have one!  *sigh*  I can live with that, as I still frequent Jo-Ann's and Michael's.  :)  But it did sadden me when it was removed.

My Walmart only has yarn, sewing machines and other things you can find in Micheals', Hobby Lobby, and Joanns'.

If I need a specialized yarn, I have to order from a catalog like Mary Maxim, Herrnscher's, Lion, Peaches and creme and Bernat (Lily Sugar and cream).  Ebay is a good source.

I went to a Walmart in Austin last week and they had fabric and tulle in stock.  I got 2 yards of white and 2 yards of purple.  They had more yarn then my home store so I got my closet filled up.  I am afraid that if Mom opens the closet door...she will be buried.

I am ranting about schools trying to control how we feed our kids. Sorry, but from time to time, I get sick of the health food fanatics who don't understand you don't have to ban something, you can teach moderation.

Interesting, perhaps but I am not sure how useful it would be. I don't have school age kids at the moment and I am not a teacher. But thanks for it anyway.

Actually chocolate milk is the #1 recommended drink after a workout.
Get your kid's to exercise more then this wouldn't happen.

Doesn't the fact that the children are drinking MILK outweight the sugar concerns? My daughter will NOT drink white milk - so I mix it 3:1 with chocolate so that she gets her dairy products. Lets think about what is really important here. As for our school - milk is not "provided" as much as it is "sold". No subsidies.

That is rather tame.
I read about some schools in eastern US someplace that was banning homemade lunches, the kids were told they had to eat what the school served.

And then last year there was the cop raid (at gunpoint) of a health food co-op in Venice, CA cuz they carry raw unpasturized milk... yes, that really did happen, there are videos of the raid online.

There is a website called MyLunchMoney.com. I discovered it while cruising around on the net.  It is a program where the parent controls the money for lunch.  I have used it for 2 grades and it insured that Lizard had a decent mail.  You put it on your credit card and pay a small fee (1.95) each month.

A new program started in schools today, at least in San Antonio.  They take pictures of the contents of the lunch tray.  They say it is to count the calories, but to me, it is pushing the unhealthy foods.
