Ensign, his family and staff were surprisingly clumsy in handling this, to the point of probably getting some people indicted.

I like this part.  They guy who denied he had anything to do with creating the settlement amount....when the truth comes out seems he was a major player in the settlement amount..

I wonder how all those Right Wing Praise Jesus types feel when one of their own is caught attempting to cover up a dare I say it GASP.... a commandment...Senator Colburn..why lie...

In July 2009, Coburn said he was consulting with Ensign “as a physician and as an ordained deacon” and he considered it a “privileged communication that I will never reveal to anybody.” Asked about the claim from Doug Hampton, the husband of Ensign’s mistress, that he “urged Ensign to pay the Hamptons millions of dollars,” Coburn said, “I categorically deny everything he said.”
Coburn was similarly blunt in a November 22, 2009 interview with George Stephanopoulos: Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., told me flatly that he did not offer to broker a million-dollar deal between his Senate colleague, John Ensign, R-Nev., and the family of Ensign’s mistress.
Then the truth comes out......

Mr. Albregts tried to get a ballpark estimate from Senator Coburn as to the amount he would be comfortable with. Mr. Albregts proposed $8 million based on a document Doug Hampton prepared. According to Mr. Albregts, Senator Coburn said that the figure was absolutely ridiculous. Senator Coburn then stated that the Ensigns should buy the Hamptons home because it is so close to the Ensigns, and the Hamptons should receive an amount of money above and beyond that to start over, buy a new home, have some living money while they were looking for new employment, and possibly some seed money to send the children off to college. Senator Coburn stated that that’s what I’ve thought from day one would be fair, but said that $8 million was nowhere close to a reasonable figure. Senator Coburn told Mr. Albregts

I just think it's hilarious.

This was the self-righteous jackass who called for Clinton and Craig to resign.

Karma's a bitch.

He thought by resigning he could avoid any sanctions. Guess he thought wrong.

Per the report, by resigning, he avoided being depositioned under oath, which was scheduled for the day after his surprise resignation.  He wrung every last penny of salary from his job before resignation.  POS.

I'm reading the report now. The guy was a total dummy, and committed all kinds of illegal acts, leaving all kinds of evidence around about it.  He's toast.

Yet another reason I favor a constitutional amendment on term limits. AND along with that, make these idiots live under the same laws that we live under. No more lifetime pensions at their salary for serving one term. No opt out of social security.

He didnt get away scott free ... yet. From the CSpan report on TV, this is all being turned over to prosecutors.

The Senate investigation was thorough and well done.  Numerous violations of numerous laws, backed up with both sworn testimony and records, and clear evidence that Ensign tried to break the laws to shield what he was doing.  It might be surmised that the affair constituted rape because the woman objected to it and went along because she was afraid that she and her husband could be out of jobs otherwise (yeah, there is a name for that).

I never intended to imply that he's getting off.  The prosecutor will get an ironclad high-profile case with no work on his or her part.  As I said, he's toast.
