Fukushima 'Full Meltdown' Made Official

That nukes aren`t safe, is also now official.

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2011/05/fukushima-full-meltdown-made-official/37671/

TEPCO officials confirmed today the months-long of suspicion that the Reactor No. 1 at Fukushima suffered a full meltdown. According to the disclosure today, workers discovered earlier this week that No. 1's containment vessel has been leaking water and today discovered a sizeable hole they believe was created by fallen fuel pellets. The water leakage not only indicates that the clean up efforts will take longer than originally expected but also that the worst case scenario was already underway when TEPCO said it had been avoided.

Before anybody panics over the very scary phrase "full meltdown," it's worth pointing out that nuclear scientists don't necessarily agree on what that means. The difference between a "partial meltdown," which is what we were lead to believe had happened, and a "full meltdown," which is the term dominating today's headlines, is unclear and perhaps not even that important. According to Columbia's David Brenner, a "full meltdown" occurs when the exposed fuel melts through the bottom of the containment vessel. That's not the dangerous part, though. When asked in an interview about the danger of meltdowns, Brenner said:

Whatever you want to call it, full meltdown, partial meltdown, it doesn't matter... it is just idiotic to build a nuclear power plant in an area prone to earthquakes....

Isn't it a "Brazil Syndrome" ( or perhaps Uruguay Syndrome )

Do you know that expression...China Syndrome is from an old movie ? They stole it from nuclear physicist Ralph Lapp when in 1971 he used the term China syndrome to describe a possible burn-through.

The concept being that if a nuke reactor full melt-downin the US would 'melt' down...all of the way through the earth to China. No, that could not actually happen.

They're not in the US, they're in Japan.

Look at a globe and tell me what's on the other side of the planet from Japan? That's right. ( nearest land) is Brazil.

So a core melting through the earth from Japan does NOT go to China, but Brazil ( maybe Uruguay... )

Are you suggesting that nearest country to the point opposite the globe from Japan *isn't* Brazil ( or perhaps Uruguay? )

It's hardly a joke and the phrase was born from the speculation of the probability of a melt down in the US.

You are free to create others if you wish but the OP is 'The China Syndrome in Japan.' Which I took to mean a melt down that could go through the earth wherever it might happen, to wherever it might melt.

I always thought the phrase came from the movie and yes it was supposed to be in the US. Fargle pointed out that if it happened in Japan they would have to change the destination from China, since it is not on the other side of the world from Japan. Sorry you missed that. Like I said, it really sucks when you have to explain it like this.

No, the point is that "The China Syndrome" itself is the stuff of cheap comic books, just wild eyed far left hyperbole with absolutely no basis in reality

you mean like the "earth"  there is no place where it is safe.  perhaps "safer" but not safe.

here in Illinois, there has not been an earthquake, well since last year...and they believe ours are "safe" from that kind of damage.  The problem is, it is always those 1 in a 100 or 1000 years things that seems to destroy it and they use that as their excuse
