quote:

“I have sought further information from the staff of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and they confirm for me that, in fact, the best intelligence gained from a CIA detainee — information describing Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti’s real role in Al-Qaeda and his true relationship to Osama bin Laden — was obtained through standard, non-coercive means, not through any ‘enhanced interrogation technique.’

“In short, it was not torture or cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of detainees that got us the major leads that ultimately enabled our intelligence community to find Osama bin Laden. I hope former Attorney General Mukasey will correct his misstatement. It’s important that he do so because we are again engaged in this important debate, with much at stake for America’s security and reputation. Each side should make its own case, but do so without making up its own facts.

The silence from the right is tortuously deafening.

Perhaps staying on topic would be useful?

Yes this is the "useful" information we got from the torture.      [8|]

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/05/02/11-mastermind-warns-nuclear-hellstorm-bin-laden-killed/

The self-proclaimed mastermind of the 9/11 terror plot told interrogators at Guantanamo Bay that Al Qaeda has a nuclear bomb somewhere in Europe and would detonate it if Usama bin Laden was ever captured or killed, The Daily Telegraph reported, citing WikiLeaks’ cables.

Khalid Sheikh Mohamed, one of the top prisoners at the facility, called the plan a “nuclear hellstorm.” The report, which was first published late last month, said some detainees had comprehensive knowledge of Western countries’ nuclear defense.

I'm glad McCain is showing he's got some guts after all. As a candidate for Pres he was gutless, but this is going out with a bang and on a high note. Kudos to him- and he's right as well, that this is a debate we need to have to shut down Gitmo once and for all as well as restricting the activities of the CIA.

One observation is that had we not decided to torture people, we might have gotten this information sooner, rather than later. By torturing people, we scare off the people who want to come forward.

As a country- we always do better when we stick to our ideals- and this flirtation with dictatorship has been a disaster on so many levels: to our standing in the world, our economy, and our self respect.

I want a no dictator dividend: get rid of Homeland Security, the Patriot Act, and TSA and let's pay down the deficit and stimulate our economy.

He waffled around on the issue quite a lot during his POTUS campaign. It's one of the reasons I stopped supporting him.

The godfather of torture is Dick Cheney. I am waiting breathless and waterlogged for his eloquent defense against McCain's remarks. [8|]
