I don't know I this qualifies as a "silly" hobby, as we both are pretty serious about our musicianship. But it is an avocation and not our jobs.

I'm sure the word silly was tongue in cheek..sorta.

I've never found any hobby that a female of mine was involved in silly. If it was important to them then I also saw it that way. Whether I personally enjoyed it or not.

TreasureKY -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 3:45:36 PM)

Firm spends a great deal of time collecting and organizing electronic media... to the tune of 52 terabytes worth, so far in the past three years.  It is something that he does by himself, and not really a hobby that I can participate in with him or be an observer.  I'd like to say that I'm fully supportive of this, but I probably don't always come across that way to him.  It does seem to consume him, at times.  But as I told him the other day, at least it is a "hobby" of which I can enjoy the fruits, as well.  I couldn't say the same if he tied lures in his spare time.  [:)]

Unfortunately, this is about the only "hobby" he has right now; our business takes up a great deal of our time and energy.  We do try to share hobbies when we can... in the past couple of years we've taken sailing lessons and ballroom dance together.  He's been very supportive of me when we've done those things together, as I have been of him.  Aside from those things, I personally just don't have the time to have any hobby right now.  When I'm not working on our business, I'm working on household chores.  I've found that some time to sleep is pretty much not optional.  [;)]

I used to have many hobbies that I enjoyed, and I'm hoping to once again some day have the time to engage in them.  Based on the kind of person that Firm is, I fully expect that he'll be completely supportive of my interests... just as I would fully support him having activities that he enjoyed.

NuevaVida -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 4:06:40 PM)

He doesn't play sports but he works for a major league baseball team for a fun 2nd job.  Nothing like hanging out at the ball park, talking to people, watching the games and making some extra cash at the same time!  This means I see less of him during baseball season, but sometimes I'll go to a game, sit in his section, and check him out while he works ::drool, drool::

When I'm not at the games, I do stuff for him at home, and never, ever complain about the time separated.  Why complain about something he enjoys so much, yanno?

During football season we're watching every Raider game.  Ugh, the Raiders.  I watch with him, make snacks, stay quiet and (very important here) don't mock his team. [8D]

His other hobby is a shared one - listening to music and going to see live music.  I probably go to more live shows than he does, but he's totally supportive of that.  We live about an hour & a half apart right now, but last March I had a terrible, horrible, no good very bad day at work, and one of my favorite up & coming bands was playing at a club here in town.  None of my friends were available to go that night, so he drove up after work (a 2 hour drive from his work) and took me, then left at 5:30 in the morning to head back to work the next morning.  Way freakin cool, in my book.

Last year when I rode the Tour de Cure (bicycle), he & his daughter came up to support me.

Even if it's stuff we don't necessarily enjoy doing ourselves, we are very supportive of the other person's interests.

Hmm- I'm not a team sports guy- don't play and don't spectate. I sail, ski, and build and fly model airplanes- and I'm currently single. OK, maybe that has something to do with the dorky hobbies...

I also seem to have learned at an early age that you have to share your toys if you expect someone to play with you. So most of my hobbies I try to expand to include my s.o., but I also pick s.o.s on that basis.

Anyhow, it's been hard to find someone to date who also sails. Watching sailboat racing is like watching paint dry even when you know what's going on, and I wouldn't expect anyone to be shore support. It's nice to have, but it'd get old for that person pretty quick. So I tend to want whoever I'm dating to come sailing with me- which can also involve racing. Hard to find, but great when you succeed.

Skiing- never dated anybody who wanted to sit in the lodge- again, it'd get boring.

Model airplanes? It's hard to interest girls in model airplanes, although one of my friends 9 y.o. daughter seems to have caught the bug more than anybody else (although her younger brother is also into it.) If I attend a contest 90% of the people there are guys, although occasionally some s.o.'s do show up. The last woman I dated I convinced her to take a crack at building one since the modern kits are like puzzles and she seemed to enjoy it well enough. (She was a good girlfriend- I miss her.) She also flew a bit. (Building and flying are really separate activities these days. I'm a dinosaur, I do both.) But when I'm out flying airplanes its really pretty easy to do something else - I fly at a park, so someone could go for a walk, look at the flowers, that kind of stuff- or just hang out and catch rays and read a book. I'm happy with the company, cheerleading would seem odd.

Cooking? Well, a bit more of a response is called for here if somebody expects me to keep cooking for them. But I like to cook, so I'm happy to have somebody to cook for.

Sam

I've never seen his hobbies as silly and yes I'm always supportive of him in anything he does or likes and he's the same with anything I have an interest in even if he doesn't. He finds some of my hobbies a little strange and different but he still supports me in them.

He likes baseball. I don't get it but I still will go to a game with him, watch a game on tv and even watch the scores for him and report them to him but if he was to ask me what was going on in the game....I'd have no clue. lol

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 4:27:00 PM)

i never saw any of his hobbies as being "silly;" i actually found them fun. i like getting into the things the people i care about are into. and if i just absolutely can't, i'll still support them in enjoying it. =p

Lucylastic -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 4:32:27 PM)

Ive always looked at my significant other (several over time) hobbies as a learning experience, fun, and if I dont like, I can get into one of my own.
My hubby and I share several , and others that we keep to ourselves.
my pet got me into hockey, american football,  and more than a few kinks I hadnt heard of
Its an avenue into broadening your mind and experience
some you will want to do , other s wont be,
hubby doesnt enjoy my jewellery making or toy making, but Im not into gardening, so it works out well

I happen to know that there are many many people who wish you would return to your hobbies, darling. I would one hundred percent support that.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 5:13:53 PM)

I have always supported my sweetheart's hobbies as best I can. I've always been afraid of water, and when I was involved with a man who was a swimmer, I went to his swim meets... despite the fear and the panicky feeling I had. I just put those aside, sucked it up, and cheered him on.

My writing (which is I suppose a silly hobby) takes up huge chunks of time, and sometimes people I've been involved with don't understand that I'm going to disappear for days. And I mean DISAPPEAR. No phone, no going out, no talking - merely grunting. I'm lucky if I remember to eat. I tend to be spent after as well. Sometimes it would be nice if someone brought me tea and coffee and a sandwich every now and then, sent me to a masseuse after a few days of typing, hosed me down every now and then, took me out for a beer after the process at last lags, but alas....

Hah no, your writing isnt silly... But I now exactly what you mean about  losing contact with the real world, sometimes I moan like hell at having to take a break to go and take a pee, Im gonna be like that for a few next days on work, my schedule is up, then work,  then bed, maybe eat in there somewhere. I get lost in what Im doing and woe betide anyone who wants me to take a break before its done.
\Now that the kids are grown its very easy to get focussed like never before

I'm not so much supportive as continually amazed by how she seems to be really good at pretty much everything.

Does that ever get on your nerves? I mean like no obviously you're proud and impressed and all that but on some level does it get under your skin?

I used to date this girl who could consistently beat me at table tennis and it drove me NUTS!

Yr profile pic is my all time favorite here btw!

Nope, she has an obscene amount of talents that I don't have at all, so don't feel any need to compete. Things things that I do have a comparable level of talent for, I already know I'm really fucking awesome at so still don't feel any need to compete.

Thank you. I was unsure as the whether I was wearing enough Burberry to pull off the classy look I was going for, but your praise has reassured me.
I like your face, your face suits you (the expression specifically.),

1000 times, this.  I have yet to find something that Max doesn't excel at.  It's irritating and inspiring by turns.

The only "silly hobby" he has, though, is his reenacting.  He does a number of time periods (and makes all his own clthes for each of them) and I do try my best to be supportive.  I've even dressed up and gone out with him a few times*.  But there are times when he's telling me something about history or weapons or reenacting or whatever, and my eyes completely glaze over.  But I guess he feels the same way when I go off on a tangent about one of my interests, so it goes both ways.

*One of the only times I have passed was at a reenactment, actually - someone questioned the group leader about letting such a young boy handle the firearms.  One of my brightest moments.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/13/2011 6:20:43 PM)

I guess so. Hanners really only has two hobbies. Reading and listening to music (not at the same time). When she does either, my job is just to be really quiet and leave her alone. I'm learning to knit, so that's usually what I do at those times. Not exactly the sort of supportiveness you meant, along those lines I sorted all her books by topic and author, so she can find the one she wants easily.

I guess we're kind of dull when it comes to hobbies.

thinking on this more, if my partner felt or told me that my hobbies or interests were/are silly I don't know that I would view him in the same way again. I mean to me I would take that to mean he just doesn't really have an interest in ME since those things are part of me and there are reasons behind why I like what I like.

We both know why we like what we do. It's all part of how we grew up or what we missed in our lives or needed something to fill a void, etc...it wasn't just something silly.

MP pretty much goes from one hobby to another.  If it's something that I'm interested in as well, great.  I'll participate with him.  If it's something that I don't want to do as well, I'll encourage him to venture off on his own and enjoy while I'm doing My own thing.  I'm really not much of a 'sit in the stands and watch' kind of chick.  There's at least half a dozen fun things I could be doing instead that I enjoy that he doesn't.

What she said [:)][:)][:)]

I would not be bothered to watch my partner playing whatever game unless it would be a very important one for him...when I did sports as a kid I also discouraged my parents to come to watch as I actually preferred to have that space for me [>:] When I played in the orchestra it was a different matter as there during concerts of course they were supposed to be there and were very suppportive (actually, my dad received a honouring membership for being a member of that music orchestra (accordeon) since 25 years...which very coincidentially I found out when I googled my dads name for very different reasons (which had to do to check something with his last employer before his retirement)...anyhow, I couldn't believe it, I was dragged to play that thing for 9 years of my life and only managed to get rid off it when school demands went up big time and he gets that fucking acknowledgement and a bottle of wine [8|] yeah, yeah...paying the membership fees obviously matters more than the actual active contribution....[8|]

Anyhow, to get back to the topic, I prefer in a relationship that each party has their own personal space in some areas, such as such sport activities and simply to enjoy the other moments together....there is no need IMO to get that adored to waste my time to watch any games or so....at least not from my side [:)]

Oh... and the love feeling is so mutual!  [:D]

Though I do think I need my snot.  I'm not exactly sure why... it's kinda icky, but I think it serves some sort of purpose.  [;)]

LOL, we discussed that, I grew up near the Alpes, surrounded by a lot of rather large lakes, so skiing and sailing was a pretty common past time. I would suggest that Italy/Switzerland/Austria/Southern Germany might be good hunting grounds, also several Scandinavian countries...

samboct -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/14/2011 6:03:43 AM)

So that's it.... hmmm.... Unfortunately, my name is not Sven, I am not 195 cm tall, I am not blond, and I cannot bench press a tractor. Do Scandinavian girls go for 50 y.o. dark haired, somewhat balding guys who are 170 cm tall, named Sam, who can sit on a bench? (and who have a Jewish sense of humor?)

LadyConstanze -> RE: Are you supportive of your S.O's silly hobbies? (5/14/2011 9:05:20 AM)

My dad's Skandinavian, 5'5, quite stocky (as to not mention that ugly word overweight) almost completely bald but was dark haired (mom said and old pics show she's right) his sense of humor is quite odd (we all cringed when he made a wine fountain for his bday party where the wine was dispensed from the penis of a little boy, he thought it was funny..., he skis, sails and flies gliders, mom is Northern Italian, blonde, green eyed, 5'9 and still rather stunning - I guess she must have a sense of humor as she's still married to him...
