When you cook you have greater control over what goes into your body. Micro-zapped frozen dinners and simlar such things excluded in my definition of "cooking". Nearly everything you buy in the grocery store has been altered or had various chemicals/things added and who knows what too much and various combinations do to the body, not to mention the chemicals in cans, etc. Why exercise and not do drugs, drink or smoke and then eat garbage? It doesnt make sense. So, anyone that wants to limit or avoid (as much as one can) those artifical additives, etc, well, you just have to cook it yourself. Which if you take it one step further, why do you garden? Again, greater control over how your food is grown and therefore, what you eat and what goes into your body. Not to mention that a few seeds and regular watering is considerably less expensive than buying retail. Cooking takes on a greater meaning to me when I am in a relationship, I like to please and a good tasting, healthy meal is one way to do that. Edited to add that I grew up on a farm, I was the only one in the family to become a vegetarian (at a very early age). Yes, the rest of my family all thought I was weird. I do eat some meat now but not that much. As a kid I had my own garden too.
