I don't know the reason, basically I am at the mercy of forecasters, but has anyone else experienced crazy weather this year?

We watched the start of a funnel cloud last evening, swirling and mixing, with lightening, rain and thunder until it formed a funnel, not quite reaching the ground.   No mention of this on the news, no warning that this storm system could produce anything, but there it was.   Tornado's are not common in the PNW, but after last night, I'm thinking a root cellar might not be a bad thing.   Auntie Em!

Are we witness to a shift and change in climate?   Global warming?  Or, just the planet doing what it does...change and evolve?

Our weather is acting different this year, certain plants are still in hibernation, nights still dipping close to freezing and here it is mid May, and we are concerned with the crops.   Just wondered if anyone else is experiencing changes to their normal weather pattern.

I do believe that changes are constant, that it is our own hubris to believe that the long physical history of this planet no longer applies...
Ice Age anyone?

Much colder winter than normal followed by a very early frost free spring with crazy storms. Rainfall is well over normal and tornadoes in the mountains whicch is totally unheard of.

A few years ago, I was driving the semi around the country & mentioned to a "friend" that the weather seemed harsher than the year before. He told me it was because the Feds created Katrina & it messed up all the weather patterns.

The only weather pattern that isnt normal is weather patterns that DONT change. Due to La Nina conditions the Georgia and the Carolinas were predicted to have as high as a 30% probablity of precipitation in the wettest one third of historical totals (with low to normal probability of being in the one third driest). More interesting, along the Mississippi there was as high as a 75% probablity of precipitation in the wettest one third of its historical totals and almost no probablility of being in the driest one third.

The climate is definitely changing, but everyone looks for sudden and dramatic changes.   Sudden and dramatic events have always been a part of the weather and what we've seen this year isn't new.  This said, snow falls in my state (Tennessee) haven't happen in Fall for the last 20 years and I grew up with them every year.   Odd and extreme weather is normal, look to other changes for climate change.

It's definitely an abnormal year, weather-wise, but I wouldn't go so far as to jump on "The climate is totally changing!" bandwagon at this point.  Today we're experiencing thunder, lightening and hail, in the middle of May - definitely not "normal," but who's to say the complete climate is changing?

Then again I haven't read studies or reviewed trends.  I just know this year is a little funky.

The climate is changing a lot, I mean there is the crowd in denial who will claim that the weather always changed and it's the planet, has nothing to do with pollution blah blah... Oddly enough a lot of scientists disagree and as a layman, if you consider that we are creating more heat than ever before (electric appliances our grandparents or great grandparents wouldn't dream about but who are now standard, cars, factories, you name it...) the heat/released energy just doesn't disappear...

Well lets see. Thursday was sunny and around 70 degrees. Friday about the same. Saturday it dropped into the 40's. A month ago it was 60 one day and snowing the next.

Nope, weather is normal for Michigan.

Yeah. It's called "spring." If you don't like the weather, wait 20 minutes, and it will change.

Tornadoes that don't touch down are standard here, every couple of years. It's more common than if they do. The weather forecast calls them squall lines. I've lost patio furniture a couple of times because of this. High winds but not a true funnel cloud.

However you know what they say, if you don't like the weather just wait five minutes.

The only way to determine if there are actual climate change trends is to look at history. When I lived in San Francisco, it actually snowed one day. It melted soon after it touched down, but it was snow. In the city of San Francisco. I thought this was a total freak & indicative of global warming trends, until I found a photograph of Golden Gate Park covered in snow. The photograph was taken around the turn of the last century. So it was unusual, but by no means unheard of.

I only moved to Chicagoland a couple of months ago & the people here are complaining about the weather, but saying it's still not that unusual. Every few years they have Spring weather like this: cold for weeks, then hot for a day or two & back to cold. I'm not used to it being this cold in May, but apparently it's kind of normal.

I think that lots of people think that the weather we're experiencing is weird because they're relying on their own memory of weather patterns & events.

I've thought of this, I mean even before coming to CM. One thing I seemed to notice was more drastic changes in short periods of time. I said " Remember the days when it got a little warmer every day in the spring and a little cooler every day in the fall ? ". Maybe I'm wrong but it certainly seemed that way. It seems now one day you can have a cookout and even get a tan or burn, then the next day you are shoveling snow.

It's not so much that it never happened before, it just seems like it happens more. I remembr as a kid, it was warm and raining on Christmas eve. This was a very long time ago, and being the exception it was something noteworthy. Then on Jan. 3rd 1995 it was extremely cold. My supplemental heater (a gas ventless infrared space heater) was cranked up and I went to work. Then the call came in. I come home to find about a fifth of the house missing. Well, I rode herd on the contractor during the repairs, but in the beginning it was a bunch of carpentry to rebuild the roof etc., and then the new roof. During that time the insurance would've gladly paid for me to get a motel room or whatever, but I didn't really want that. So I went to Florida for a week or so, maybe like nine days ? Not sure. But it was mid January and it was about 60F out. The neighbors were out, it was like spring. I joked with the neighbors that I had brought that fair weather with me and they owed me. It was also noteworthy. Now again in the middle of May it's cold again (now). It's not frigid, it's running around 40F. but remember in a couple of weeks it will be June.

Now the hard part is determining how much of this is subjective. Do I notice it more because of age ? I suppose it's possible, but now that you mention it........

Now comes that I seem to have noticed that sunlight is more intense. Is it ? In the past we never even considered sunscreen, we got a burn a couple times a year and then it wasn't a problem anymore. Now they're saying that a sunscreen is very important to prevent skin cancer. What ? It wasn't like that before. I never even considered sunglasses either back then.

Now the conclusions of myself and quite a few others is that there never was an ozone "layer". It is an ozone belt. The UV protection is not as important near the poles, never was because of the angle of incidence of sunlight. It means a whole lot more nearer to the equator, so that kinda makes sense. But is the ozone depleted ? I would tend to think so. And if what I read about CFCs is true, it's too late because the destruction of the ozone does not deplete the CFCs, they are like a catalyst, or a reagent. They come out of the reaction to operate in another similar reaction, again and again. If this is true, it's no wonder that they do not publicize it. Why bother ? If true it simply means that future generations will always need sunscreen and sunglasses, things like that. If they keep quiet, it will happen so gradually nobody will take notice.

However, if the sun's rays are not as effectively filtered and diffused as they were in the past, this should most likely result in more uneven heting of the ecosphere. If anything can make drastic changes in the weather more common, that certainly seems to be one of those factors.

I still say though, that this is something that is going to be hard to discern whether it is due to reality, or our perception. This is not a gradual global cooling or warming to which I refer, I mean the almost "bipolar" behavior of the local weather. Now that you mention it that is..........
