That is great, and your new pic is very nice, too. What kind of fighting sport does he do?

the way it is written, Tae Kwon Do would be a good guess.

Mine too, however, the lingo in several of them is very similar.
If it is Taekwon-Do, that would be funny. Middle child and youngest do that, too.

TKD is such a useless fighting style to know.  You're better off doing Judo.

Kata is usually used to refer to the forms practiced in Japanese martial arts so its probably not TKD. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art, its forms are called Poomse or Poomsae

Judo is more practical (as are all soft styles) if the fight isn't over instantly. Ignoring grappling is a glaring weakness with Tae Kwon Do but good schools teach Hap Ki Do techniques as well.

At more advanced levels TKD practicioners learn some really nasty tricks that are practical and effective. Tae Kwon Do is a hard style and has too much reliance on strikes. Its not even remotely useless but its not a good first choice for MMA or self defense without adding a soft or grappling style.

or Hyung, but also Kata.

Hapkido is not alot of ground work, really.  Judo sucks, it is 99.99 percent a timing deal, which is gonna put nearly everyone on the planet out of it in real world stuff.

I disagree. Timing is important in competitive Judo where people have a good idea of what's coming and know how to resist, but the average yokel is so unaware of their own balance that it doesn't matter a whole lot. The exception is if you are seriously outmatched in size, but in that case you are facing a major disadvantage regardless of which style you use.

TKD is too incomplete. Many TKD moves will leave you open and then any reality-based fight is over.  A class that teaches Muay Thai is more "practical" if you're into that stuff.  Being clinched by someone that knows MT is a hospital/dentist trip waiting to happen.  Savate is also a fun one.

Then again there is the possibility that where you learn your martial art is simply just a "McDojo."  Most of them will show you how to do some flashy stuff and make you think you can be a real badass but in the end you're learning nothing for self-defense and more doing a very physical exercise routine with silly outfits on.

I used to being schooled in Akidio one time in college and it is merely using the attacker's motion against him/her.  I used it against my brothers when they thought that they can scare me...Landing on their butts and backs taught them better.

TKD can be one dimensional. On the other hand the people that are really good are very dangerous. In a street fight they will basically take the lowest blow that's open and if the opponent falls take a quick shot to the head. If that doesn't work, hopefully they learned some grappling somewhere.

They won't try high kicks or flashy stuff in a real fight, the last thing they want is to lose balance or end up in a clinch. The school and instructors can make a huge difference. In general TKD has become a sport but if taught properly it can be a formidable Martial Art, it should be augmented with Hap Ki Do, Jiu Jitsu, or Judo.

I've always thought Aikido was beautiful - both in form and in philosophy...

Oh, and TFTB - congrats to your honey.

Or Hyeong

However, I have heard Kata used for TWD forms too, mostly by people new to the sport or only marginally involved, like TfB is.
It is simply the better known term.

My son studied aikido for years, saw some of the instructors give demonstrations when the dojo had people from all over the country and Japan come through, it was fascinating.

Watched one who could roll from shoulder to shoulder while barely touching the parking lot surface, sometimes, I swear he didn't actually touch.

I appreciated both the art and the philosophy behind it, I wish he had continued, he might have maintained more balance in life.

But getting back to the post...you are correct to be proud of him, that is great!!!

Kata is also part of Karate-Do...

However,

Congratulations to your daddy, Tfb
