Hi.

I need some help. Or, more to the point, someone I'm acquainted with needs help. He lives in the Tampa area. I hesitate to say this, but I feel I should...I don't know him face to face, but only online and on the phone. We "met" over a year ago. At that time, he was in a somewhat depressed state, unemployed, but receiving unemployment insurance. I encouraged him to get a job because the unemployment benefits weren't going to last forever. But he was resistant to getting a job that paid less than his benefits. To add to the situation, he received a head injury from a car accident when he fell asleep behind the wheel. Based on everything he has told me, I would say he's made some very poor choices in his life...many that were impulsive...and I believe that many of these decisions have led him to where he is today...unemployed with no money (the unemployment benefits ended earlier this year) and no health care and being extremely depressed, along with other mental health issues.

My question here is, does anyone know what options he may have for health care given his financial situation? The most concerning thing right now is his depression.

Thanks to any and all who offer helpful information.

DeviantlyD,

Your friend should have had the ball rolling quite some time ago. Depression coupled with a head injury? Poor life choices?

It takes a while for disability to kick in if you can actually prove you are disabled. I would have taken the job and screwed the unemployment benefits for the sheer fact of the benefits can and will run out ( but the employment won't).

His current option (and one that I have reluctantly taken) is to go to a crisis center. The Tampa Bay Area? There are quite a few in that area.

I went there after I had an incident. They are very nice people and will assist in any way possible, crisis or not.

Hopefully everything works out for him.

In Florida there are county health care clinics that operate sliding scale.

Usually there are mental health options that run the same way (but my guess is there have been cuts to those programs).

http://www.mhcinc.org/     This would be a good place to start also

http://www.metromin.org/  would be a good place for resources and someone to talk with.

I don't know exactly where he is but here is a place in Pinellas County which has several programs.

http://www.ethep.org/    They have some housing and programs where they help people find treatment and get their disability started if needed.
