The term is being overused and mis-used. A "deal breaker" is actually something that happens after you have made an agreement. Height cannot be a deal breaker because if you don't like someone's height you know it before you get in a relationship with them.

If they lie about their height, and you met them thinking they were a different height, then it could be a deal breaker.

However the term is commonly used to mean things we cannot tolerate. As opposed to things we must have.

exactly ^^^^^

i used the term the same as NS' 'let's talk about' has been taken up by others in the off topic section.

blimey, it was just a conversation in general at work that got me thinking about it again. thought i'd throw it in the forum to see what others think.

as for Harry Potter.....huge fans here too. those books are what got my son reading for fun. we can't wait for the last film!

I would say in your scenario that LYING was the real deal breaker. Which many in this lifestyle cannot tolerate.

I would like it to be known that I am too young to really know any Barry Manilow songs. Feel old, people. Feel old.

Depends on what you're lying about and why. Christmas presents come to mind here or do you really want to know?

However for The Man, smoking is a deal breaker. I quit in my early 20's but if  I ever picked it back up (and yes 30 years later I still have the occasional craving) that would be a deal breaker for him. He loathes it with a passion.

I have lots of deal breakers...

abusers, smokers, druggers, alcoholics, people with anger management issues, rude people, born again christians, Zealot Muslims, racists, sports fanatics (except Keith Olbermann), and I could think up more if you gave me a while
Well there go all my fantasies about you.

Most of those are just common sense

which would be fine, if common sense would be as common as it should be...[8|]

Geesh, I was a wee lass when he was popular. His music was insidious and pervasive. I cannot forget it even though I was like between 5 and 7 years old when he was on the radio constantly. My mom would listen to him, and I remember it well because she would have him on in the car and take me with her to sell Avon. They played him over and over and over again. Like water torture. I think it may have warped my psyche[:(]

On the other hand, drug use, physical abuse and singing barry manilow songs in the shower could be deal breakers because you may not know the other party was into such deviant behavior beforehand.

[sm=rofl.gif]
Now I have it stuck in my head...Angel singing Manilow songs to Lorne whenever he wanted a reading about his future.

I think singing Manilow in the shower would be cute.  Singing rap music in the shower (or at any time) would be the deal breaker, lol.

Btw...lots of jingles from commercials were written by Manilow.  Anyone remember 'Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there...' and the Jack in the Box song about 'come as you like, come as you are', and a soda pop song...I think it was for Dr. Pepper.

What?  Do I look like I have a giant stack of Manilow records and some CDs?  [:D]  Does anyone know the name of one of his songs that was about the Bermuda Triangle making people disappear?  I lost that one when I moved from CA to WV and cannot remember the name of the song nor the album.  (I flunked Google.)

...is this a trick question?

Google seems to be under the impression that it's called:

(wait for it)
(drumroll)

'Bermuda Triangle'.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=barry+manilow+bermuda+triangle+lyrics

And Julia, I hope you've recovered and that this thread hasn't brought back too many horrible memories. :p

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: Deal Breakers a Deal Breaker? (5/19/2011 3:50:36 AM)

[sm=ofcourse.gif]  No, it was not a trick question.

I cannot believe the name of the song REALLY WAS Bermuda Triangle.  You found the right one.  (The one about fathers, dogs and beaches ended up being called Ships, so go figure.)

Half a dozen years ago I spent months looking at eBay auctions trying to snap up every Manilow album I could find, as I had lost my entire old collection and I wanted to replace them.  I have at least a dozen records now, but not one has that song on it, lol.  I even bought several CDs that showed up over the years at Sams and that song isn't on it.  I know I am missing an album, but dangit I tried.

I also kept looking at the mall and at Walmart for the past 7 plus years, and flea markets and garage sales and second hand stores, lol.

Probably I looked up Barry Manilow on Google years back to try to find a list of albums he made but got lost after the first dozen of millions of possible places to look.  Yes, I know it's just me, but looking at Google for something makes me think of trying to find one specific apple core at the town dump.  (Is having flashbacks of the planet sized dump from the movie Wall-E.)

When I was in school, I learned to type on one of those manual typewriters that can be seen in black and white movies.  Not electric, no ball things called "elements", and not on computers.  Gawd I feel old. [:D]

So you just went to Google and typed in Barry Manilow Bermuda Triangle Lyrics?  It was that easy?  I will bookmark it and try to find other lyrics, as my ex-husband wanted me to find some that were playing on the radio in the 1980s.  (No, he doesn't know the names of the songs, lol, but I think he would like to see everything that was on America's Top Forty.)  Some people listen to music on the web and watch movies...but I am too much of a dinosaur to be able to do that.  I think my old computer would have a heart attack and croak if I even tried. [;)]

Thanks, VC.  [sm=cute.gif]

(Yay!  I know how to find music lyrics now, as long as I know the title or can make guesses.)

Any time [:)]

Yup, that's all I did - and it'll work if you know a line but not the title as well - so if you'd known the first line of the song you could have typed:

barry manilow "we decide to get away" lyrics

and you get this:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=%22we+decide+to+get+away%22+barry+manilow+lyrics

which is much the same thing.

Happy hunting! :p

(And btw, the internet also says that the song's from the album 'Barry', but Amazon seems to only have that on vinyl.)

Actually I always sneak my gifts from under the tree, open them, look at them and rewrap. Then I spend the days before Christmas practicing my look of happy surprise. ex- "Oh my God... you shouldn't have!"

Whiplashsmile4 -> RE: Deal Breakers a Deal Breaker? (5/19/2011 8:59:06 AM)

Deal Breakers being a Deal Breaker is one big hypocritical manipulative sham of a guilt trip! This type of rubbish sounds like the kind of bullshit you'd expect to hear from some over inflated puffed up Uber-Dom. The kind of shit they'd pull out upon discovering that a sub/slave had deal breakers. A petty attempt at making them feel not submissive enough for having deal breakers. I mean come on here, let's cut to the chase of what this is really all about. Manipulative guilt tripping deflective Bullshit. LOL

I disagree. A deal breaker can be something that prevents you from making the deal. Hence, no agreement was ever reached. Something you learn in the discovery process after you meet but before you decide to get involved. Height could be a deal breaker. During some online communications it is not always immediately known.

ebonywarqueen -> RE: Deal Breakers a Deal Breaker? (5/19/2011 9:27:56 AM)

I see your point......But to break means to destroy or desolve. A deal is an agreement between two or more people. You can only destroy something that exists. so if there was never a deal in the first place, someone else's behavior can cause you to reject them but there is no deal to break if you never made a deal with them.

xssve -> RE: Deal Breakers a Deal Breaker? (5/19/2011 9:42:10 AM)

It's sarcasm whiplash.

Realistically, I have kids, it's a dealbreaker for a lot of women around my age even the Vannila ones, their kids are raised and gone and they want to have a good time, not step into a ready-made family thing - it's a dealbreaker for me if you expect me to drop my kids for you, can't do that.

Otherwise, I wouldn't know what a dealbreaker might be until I saw it - racist attitudes aren't going to endear you to me, violent drunkeness or a serious drug addiction are going lead me to reassess the situation, anything that might negatively impact my kids, or lead to police involvement, etc.

Hair color, height, weight, the rest of that aren't issues for me, the body is a vessel.
