Macs cost 4 times the  the normal price of an item to make.
They pre-load all of their software on their computers then sue Microsoft for doing the same
They use pretty advertising because they cannot stand by their product with its own merit.
They lie directly to consumers about the ability of their product.
And finally when they are trapped, and ONLY when they are trapped do they admit that something is their problem then take 6 months to fix it properly.

In general For all the shit windows gets, they own up to what they have thats broken and fix it. They dont pretend it doesnt exist. They know with their market share they are going to have issues and hire thousands of people to fix those issues.

To this day I have no idea what "RAM" is.  Last year when getting a new laptop for school I had these people tell me about all these "specs" for individual computers and I was thinking to myself, "I don't know what the fuck this guy is talking about.  Smirk and nod approvingly."

I'm no good at this dorkchop stuff.

Ram is Random access memory... Its short term memory, IE when you open up say an internet browser it writes to the Ram... If you click Save it writes it to the hard drive...

If your computer ever crashes whats ever loaded in your Ram is lost where as your hard drive usually isnt.

And to the op

Most of the Slowness when running any system is because the user doesnt have enough Ram

The slowness comes because when a user is using more then what the Ram allows it pages to the hard drive through the ram making the process take a lot more time then it normally would if the user had adequate memory for their browsing needs.

I would be delighted to do that if I could find the dang thing... Where is it on my computer? I've uninstalled several updates from Windows thinking maybe it was on them, but I can't find the program to uninstall it. I didn't instaill it purposely. I've never even heard of the thing!

ETA: has evidently lost her geek card.... :(

If you do use DOS again I have a copy of Xtree Gold.

Also, I might just be able to get my hands on Desqview. Nothing sepcial about it except it had almost all the fuctionality and feature of Windows 95, about ten years earlier. The problem would be finding a 5¼" floppy drive. Well, that and a couple hundred worth of RAM, which is probably worth about fifty cents now.

T^T

You make me remember things I'd hoped I'd never think of again.

My boyfriend in college built me my own version of DOS. It had an ascii picture of my likeness, a sexy startup quote, and lots of secret commands that regular DOS didn't have. I'd sometimes take the boot disk to my internship and start the PC with that instead of whatever they were using.

Were you one of those that played Moria? It, Hack, and other ascii-dungeons came pretty late in the DOS reign (2d graphics games were starting up at the same time but they were mostly lame--except for "Jill of the Jungle" ), but I found Moria very entertaining--even though I couldn't win it. I loved to walk into a "room" and find packed to the brim with @'s and %'s and &'s. Eeek! My master won it, though, by learning a cheat from someone else that gave him unlimited object wealth. He refused to stop playing it until he defeated the "Balhog."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XTree

XTree was the 'killer app' for DOS machines. It exposed the whole harddrive as a navigable tree, and you could drill down in to any directory or file, or launch the app for the file... At the time it was revolutionary, and it appears that everyone seems to have pretty much copied its look and feel.

That said, there's a few XTree programs available for Unix platforms still.

Windows is a ROYAL PIA..and updating everything caused my cd/dvd drive to malfunction & it no longer sees removable media. Yet still, mechanically, it works. Now I have to buy an external cd/dvd drive and then I'm gonna put all of my music into flash drives. I hope Bill Gates gets stuck in an elevator full of flatulent people.

Because you need updated drivers...

Go to the site who manufactures your cd/dvd drive and download the updated drivers and

LIKE MAGIC it works again

{above is not a windows or Microsoft error above is a user error that is blamed falsely on Microsoft as per usual because the user cant figure it out and assumes its something to do with the os instead of something unrelated.}

And OP the same can be said about craple computers as well.

Why the hell would you ever need an updated driver for a IDE or SATA Optical Drive? It's a standard interface which hasn't changed in how many years?

Because when you update things and dont install ANY driver it doesnt tend to work properly...

And since most people who upgrade their computers dont think about drivers until its half past your fucked already.... it explains why its broken..... its an extremely common mistake....

Regarding the missing CD/DVD Its more than likely an issue with the registry
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
I had this issue a few days ago after an update, this page helps to fix it.
It happened with me on XP too now im running Win7
I have no issue with editing my registry, but you may wanna back yours up before you edit yours. Losing ones registry is a huge pain in the arse and most non consensual
