In Germany they introduced charges already 20 years ago or even longer (it was during my childhood) and I can only agree to the woman in this article who says:

quote:

"In Germany, plastic bags are getting a lot rarer," says Sonja Klug, a native German. "In supermarkets you have to buy the sturdy reusable ones or the lovely linen bags." Sonja is shocked by the profligacy of British retailers. "I say about 20 times a week: 'No bag, please.' I find it maddening that people get a whole bag just to carry a sandwich over the road to the office."

Countless times I said in the stores over here "I don't need a bag" and almost always receive the answer "are you sure???" ffs, no, give me 3 hours to think about what I said

At home also the use of tin cans got reduced when they introduced the rule that you had to bring them back to the store if you want the refund...

whilst bottles you can bring back in almost any store at home for the refund, the cans you had to bring back to the store where you bought them from, if you want the refund and the hassle to keep their receipt of those cans to get the refund at the end, lead to people simply buying more likely bottles in the first place...as it was much easier to return them wherever you wanted to return them...with no hassle to keep the receipt...

It didn't take long that the number of cans were reduced significantly, in the stores...

In regards to reusing bags, I do reuse mine as bin bags for the small bins, but do know others views, such as the guy I visited in america, who preferred to buy his bin bags for those bins (instead of reusing his shopping bags for that) as they had such a lovely vanilla (or whatever flavour it was) smell

recycling in the US seems to be hit or miss, sadly..

here in FL, you can recycle the plastic bags.

When I first moved into the current house, there were recycling bins.  They were rarely picked up, and disappeared at some point.

Now, when I clean the litter boxes, I use the plastic bags, and they go into the regular garbage.  There is plenty I'd love to recycle but the local garbage pick up folks seem to have different ideas.  Bastards.

I do re-use them. I would prefer to not have them but I also don't have the foresight to carry around a half a dozen or more cloth bags for a last minute stop at the grocery store or Walmart/Kmart.

I take 99.9% of them to the recycling facility with all my other recyclables.I am lucky in that the recycle facility is on my way to work.

I have seen patio stones or garden stepping stones, whatever they're called, made out of recycled plastic bags. They are pretty cool, actually.

And yes, I do reuse them, as do a lot of my neighbors, since we have pooper scooper laws here, they're handy for picking up. They do get thrown away then, obviously, but at least they had a second use, and we didn't go to Petco and buy "special" bags.

I almost never get them, I have a tote full of totes in my car, those I use for shopping. And for the big haul, IKEA bags.

that reminds me that my parents newest tenant (she lives in the same house where my parents are living in a basement flat) was irritated about our small black bin....she could (and probably still can't as she just recently moved in) not imagine how such a small black bin should be sufficient for 3 adults in that house (my parents and herself)...so my mum showed her the compost....where every uncooked food ends up (I think it is uncooked food my mum said, personally I am out of touch at present, in that respect...according to mum uncooked food such as potatoe skins, are fine on there, whereas cooked food attracts rats) and explained to her what gets on there and that therefore they don't need a bigger black bin.

When I did the weekly shopping for my jobs in childrens homes we usually used laundry baskets in our vans to store the bought food in there

They go into the small wastebaskets in the bathrooms and bedrooms.  A lot of stores also have recycle bins for them.  We try to use the fabric shopping bags as much as possible, but the plastic ones sure come in handy if someone has stomach flu.  I'd rather not ban them, tyvm.

The problem with using re-usable bags for groceries is that they need to be washed every time. If you have a package of chicken, the blood will get into the bag and then the following week, you'll have e coli contamination of the new food. I double bag chicken in plastic because it always drips. Beef and pork aren't nearly as likely to.

I use them for wastepaper baskets. I use them instead of bubble wrap for shipping things. I keep a couple in the car so if I'm waiting I can collect all the garbage that accumulates.

We keep a couple of the plastic bags here for trash (bathroom) and next to mom's chair (mucus trouble).

Bo is big on the reusable bags.  I know he 'stole' some from me *I left some behind*.

We do have one bag for the library, though this town is not known for recycling.  There is a couple of the plastic baggie bins at Walmart.

The majestic plastic bag

i use them because they seem to collect, to breed, i don't consciously search them out to use.  Usually, they're around because of forgetfulness or laziness on my part to remember my canvas tote when i go shopping.

Man, bag nazis who drive SUVs to the grocery store get my goat. I also hate when people don't bleach their reuseable bags after every use, and then put them laden with week-old salmonella chicken and E.coli strawberry smut on the checkout conveyer belt which gets all over everyone else's food.
Hooray for clean plastic bags!

I use them to line the bathroom trash can and for kitty litter trash, and to put recycling in (then the bag gets recycled, too). I  also use them to cart stuff around in - my lunches to work, food items that I bring to Daddy's house, stuff like that.  I'm always finding uses for them, and if they rip or I accumulate too many, they go into the recycling bin.
