I teach in a school full of kids with significant social problems. In every class I teach there are at least 2 kids (and often more) who want attention of ANY kind, simply because it means they're being noticed. Now with those kids I'm slowly but surely leading them round to preferring positive rather than negative attention.

But these are children. They don't know any better because the adults in their lives have shown them no better way. They don't yet have the life experiences that enables them to make more appropriate choices.

The people who come onto this site to whine for attention DO know better. They've been around the block a dozen or so times and they KNOW that what they are doing is infantile and inappropriate. If you haven't learned at least the theory of positive social interactions by the time you hit, say, your 40s then you are nothing more than an attention-whore who would benefit from leaving the computer alone and going out there to meet people and learn this stuff.

We have people on this site with all kinds of developmental, social, physical and emotional issues. I have dyspraxia, but I'm not (too much of) a dick. Maxsboy has told us he has autism, although you wouldn't know it because he is a truly warm and empathetic human being.

People who use their disorder as an excuse for their own shitty behaviour make me so fucking angry - either grow the fuck up and behave like a grown-up, or get the fuck off the 'net and get a life!!

I hate to get serious on Saturday, but you are right. No matter what their logical mind tells them, they are at the whim of their petty desires. It's a fucking shame because they don't even know HOW to desire something that is right and good. Everything is negative.
