"there must be a massive full moon coming up on us "

That came a couple of months ago.

Of course there is the issue of when you work, and go to the store and see someone use food stamps to get a bunch of junk food, and then spend $40 on lottery tickets.

Nonetheless, I'd like to see them try to enforce this, especially since it is a form of law against stupidity. I don't know about there, but here the lottery is such a sucker bet that I wouldn't play it for free. With the odds set the way they are, it's not worth five minutes of my time.

T^T

From the way I read it, it's not a law against buying a lottery ticket, it's a law against people betting heavily on horses and such sports bets...

People who live near casinos in Germany are also not allowed to go there and gamble, to avoid temptation when it's right outside your door...

I can't say I am against the law, I just don't see a way how they can enforce it, do you have to show your latest pay check if you're betting on a horse?

I am afraid...then read this one...

http://www.lawblog.de/index.php/archives/2011/03/09/keine-lottoscheine-fr-hartz-iv-empfnger/

or this one is a bit more direct:

so they try to include lottery tickets [8|]

Yeah, but what some might use on alcohol and cigarettes, someone else might use in lottery tickets...after all its up to the person how to spend the money they have available...jeeeeesh...[8|]

It's up to them if it's their money, it's not up to them if it's social security or unemployment benefits, sorry, but why should we finance the gambling habit of somebody? We work, we pay taxes, we do with the rest of our money what we like, if they want to do the same, they might start earning some money, easy as that. I recently had the conversation with somebody who was upset that she couldn't use the vouchers she got for kid stuff to buy booze, she made a huge stink about how the state was being unfair to her, I couldn't resist but saying "By giving you a free ride that doesn't include booze? I don't think so, why should I pay for your drink? It's OK if we pay for housing and food, but booze and tobacco are luxuries!" I think so are lottery tickets, sorry but that's fucked up. Maybe their allowance is too generous if they can afford to bet?

Phoenixpower -> RE: German Unemployed Barred from Gambling (5/23/2011 5:14:30 AM)

Well, if it would be controllable I could see the point, but as it states clearly, how is that supposed to be implemented...unless you start handing out food vouchers...thats why it just makes me shake my head...

LadyConstanze -> RE: German Unemployed Barred from Gambling (5/23/2011 5:35:46 AM)

A couple of government offices here have started doing so, when the social workers found that the mothers spent the money on everything else but diapers and stuff for the kids, there is talk about tracking the purchases of people getting benefits. I honestly don't grouch the kids the money at all, but if the mother spends the money on cigs and booze and the child is not getting any good out of it, where's the point? If it is intended for child support, it should be used as such.

I agree and I don't have a problem with it when all sorts of "luxury" is banned...but it just puzzled me today when I read about the gambling aspect (coincidentially stumbled over it as in a different thread someone mentioned LG Koeln and lottery and so I googled it).

Well, I will see how that continues [:)]

Nevertheless I just can't see how that should work...unless they start providing food boxes to families instead of cash...and even that might then end up on ebay *joking*.

Much more often I see people who look one step away from living under a bridge with a foodstamp card buying the junk food, after all, it is hard to cook if you do not have access to a kitchen..

Or I see parents with kids using them...

I can honestly say i have never seen someone do what you describe, and I question whether or not you have either.

LadyConstanze -> RE: German Unemployed Barred from Gambling (5/24/2011 4:39:01 AM)

I've never seen anybody buy lottery tickets and used food stamps, but in several countries I have seen people who live of social security spend money on booze (for some odd reason Bacardi seems to be the drink of choice) and then complain about how little they are getting... Also there are people having gambling problems, especially among long term unemployed people... Quite a few communities offer free or greatly reduced activities to avoid that and keep the spirits of people who are unemployed up...

I have to say, in that respect they are even looking for social workers in Germany to provide counselling to people with gambling problems...but as this is not really something I consider myself competent to do I did not apply for those posts, but they do have such posts nationwide at present.
