I'm glad I'm an atheist for this reason, better sex, and several others. Better sex is an important reason to be an atheist but there are other reasons which are more important. For example, for me, if or when I believe in God the world doesn't make any sense to me. Innocent people being harmed or killed or sick with diseases - if there is a God that doesn't make any sense to me these things happen. But as an atheist when bad things happen to innocent people it makes sense to me because there is no God to protect or prevent people being harmed.

I wonder if religious people here perceive themselves to have more guilt about sex than atheists. I don't think anyone here that's religious has more guilt than anyone else so I guess I'm disagreeing with their findings.

So, grain of salt aside, a look at what the study -- titled "Sex and Secularism: What Happens When You Leave Religion?" -- actually found: Believers as a whole report being less satisfied with their sex lives and much less willing to share or act out their sexual fantasies with their partners. The less religious the home they grew up in, the less sexual guilt they reported. Interestingly enough, the researchers found that respondents reported "dramatic improvement in sexual satisfaction and a decrease in guilt after people left religion." Roughly 55 percent said sex "greatly improved" after losing their religion, compared to 2.2 percent who said it got worse (note, though, that this is an example of dubious self-reporting).

Why didnt you post the grains?

As a non-believer myself, I responded to the news of my inherent sexual prowess by gloating for a moment. But then I applied the atheist's signature brand of skepticism and discovered that, well, the survey didn't exactly find that the non-religious are better lays. What it actually suggests is that we report having more satisfying and less guilt-ridden sex lives -- which still sounds pretty awesome! But there are a number of caveats here: This is an Internet survey, not a randomized or representative study; and, as others have already pointed out, the poll was promoted on Pharyngula, a very popular atheist-friendly blog. Another limiting factor: The findings are based on self-reporting, which is always tricky when it comes to sex research. It's also true that one of the survey's authors, psychologist Daniel Ray, wrote, "The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture," and these preliminary findings will be published in his upcoming book, "Sex and God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality." He is far from an impartial observer.

I don't know anything about his professional qualifications to analyze or conduct surveys. Also, people find reasons to be critical of surveys all the time. Several times when I have started threads here with information about surveys people have found all sorts of reasons to criticize.

I didnt criticize, the writer of the article did.

You dont have to be religious to feel guilt.

You dont have to be an atheist to have great sex.

Atheists do have the lowest divorce rates.

But, re the study, I would find a lot of uptight people monitoring my sex life to make sure I wasn't having any fun somewhat... annoying.

And as far as I can tell, gettin' into your business is pretty much all they do these days.

For the original question, yes, yes we do. And yes, orgasms are much better once you realise your dead grandfather isn't literally watching, and it's perfectly normal to know a man Lilith-style as well as "My darling put his hand by my hole; and my womb trembled at the touching thereof" [Son 5:4, translated by Wyclife in 1395, before he was threatened by the church for putting the bible in the hands of peasants, convicted after death and by papal decree, his books and body were burnt: crazy, not? Yes.].

I love introducing great sex into the lives of good but so sadly repressed catholic men, who, once released from mental bondage, become wonderful lovers and very, very grateful. I was frankly shocked that catholic girls have so many more abortions than atheists because of fear of birth control: crazy, no? Yes. But at least Mohammed won his red wings by queening: Sunaan Abu Dawud: Book 1, Number 0270, Narrator wife Aisha (not the 9-year old wife): "And he said: Come near me. I said: I am menstruating. He said: Uncover your thighs. I, therefore, uncovered both of my thighs. Then he put his cheek and chest on my thighs and I lent upon him'. Good man! Yet a doctor checking a guy for colon or prostate cancer could get her hand chopped off. Crazy, no? Yes.

So, yes, atheists have less guilt about great sex, and what better way to celebrate humanity on anyone's Sabbath than screamingly good sex and volunteering for a secular, i.e., non-racist, cause?
