Brain -> New Polling Says Overwhelming Majority Wants Social Security Left Alone (5/23/2011 8:06:51 PM)

My aunts in New York are going to be very unhappy if they change their Social Security. Democrats would be wise not to mess around with it. Republicans are too brainwashed with right wing ideology to know better. I hope people learn once and for all to Never vote Republican. What nerve Republicans have trying to take away people's Medicare and Social Security.

In order to reduce the national debt, would you support or oppose cutting spending on Social Security, which is the retirement program for the elderly?

Ohio: 16% support, 80% oppose
Missouri: 17% support, 76% oppose
Montana: 20% support, 76% oppose
Minnesota: 23% support, 72% oppose

Brain, I think the majority of Americans, would be up in arms if they change or alter medicare and social security.

I am surprised the polls that you have shown, aren't closer to 90%!

Brain -> RE: New Polling Says Overwhelming Majority Wants Social Security Left Alone (5/24/2011 6:25:00 PM)

I thought people here might be interested in changes to Social Security because they might have family on it or family going on it in the future but I guess I was wrong.

Believe me...there is an interest...Medicare and the Republican wonderboy Ryan, will be fodder for Obama come 2012

LOL Of course people that are on SS now or about to get on it soon dont want it changed. The problem is its gonna run out faster if its left as it is. And that will happen sooner rather than later. Maybe SS can give out IOU's like the California govt had to do. [8|]

I have read that the US SS system will run into trouble about 10 years before Canada's will. I think SS is a joke and dont expect anything from it. I will probably get something I guess but it wont be much and I am fine with that cuz SS was never my "Plan A".

Lucylastic -> RE: New Polling Says Overwhelming Majority Wants Social Security Left Alone (5/24/2011 7:06:28 PM)

By the same record, there are too many of  those who wont get it(for whatever reason) , dont want others to get it, LOL

I'm surprised its not lower. It may have had to do with how the question was asked.

From my perspective- SS needs the following:

1) Means tested.
2) Similar payment as income tax.

Right now- the poor folks pay too much into this program and its stopping them from getting ahead- SS, Medicare, and Medicaid are all programs that largely benefit the elderly (most Medicaid money - I think 2/3rd goes to people over 65) which is the wealthiest demographic in the country. People earning minimum wage see close to 16% of their wages pay for this program- and that starts at $1. And we wonder why the rich have gotten richer and the poor have gotten poorer! Well, look no further than this program- it's a big chunk of the reason why.

Some folks will say that the two changes I proposed convert SS to welfare. My response- I don't care- if somebody doesn't want the money- that' s their choice. But these programs have always robbed Peter to pay Paul. Back in the 50s when it was only a total of $60- it didn't matter. Now, when it's up to over $16k- it does.

Sam

Republicans want to end social security. Republicans want to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood, which is used to provide health screenings like pap smears and mammograms, not abortions (it's illegal to do so, but they tried to lie and got caught). Republicans want to put caps on medicaid so families of alzheimers patients in nursing homes have to worry about what will happen once the cap is reached. Republicans blocked a bill to end tax breaks for outsourcing jobs overseas and provide incentives to bring jobs back to the US. I can't understand why anyone votes for these idiots.

servantforuse -> RE: New Polling Says Overwhelming Majority Wants Social Security Left Alone (5/24/2011 8:34:55 PM)

Republicans will never try to end social security.. They would be out of office in a New York minute. Changes have to be made to fund it in the future though. It will go broke if something isn't done, and done soon. Both parties are to blame for this mess and they better get id fixed very soon.

Neither can I, their behavior is treasonous.

Brain and Defiant, Did you ever take math in high school ? There are fewer people paying into social security and more people taking money from social security. It is running out of money.

Well, then to keep the money coming in, they need more people paying into it.. can you say "immigration"???? [8|]

The large number of people collecting from social security are the same large number of people who paid into it so the money should be there. Oh wait-that's not how social security works. Must be the fault of the next generation for not adding to the population problem.

It's better to do nothing than to adopt the Ryan plan or the Republican plan passed in the House. There is plenty of time to pass legislation to correct the shortfall. I suggest Democrats wait until the next elections when they take back the House and the Senate. At that time they can protect Social Security and Medicare instead of ending Medicare, annihilating Medicaid and making cuts to Social Security almost immediately.

Medicare, Social Security Funds Expiring Sooner, U.S. Says

While Medicare won’t have sufficient funds to pay full benefits starting in 2024, five years earlier than last year’s estimate, Social Security’s cash to pay full benefits runs short in 2036, a year sooner than the 2010 projection, the U.S. government said today in an annual report.

When Medicare and Social Security funds run short, they will pay less in benefits rather than stop paying entirely. Social Security would have to cut payments by 23 percent, while Medicare would reduce by 10 percent what it pays hospitals and other inpatient care providers.

“The current situation does not necessitate rushed or severe action,” said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, Democrat of Montana. “We must continue to protect the Social Security benefits our seniors count on.”

The new projections partly roll back last year’s trustees analysis, which credited the 2010 health care overhaul with expanding the life of the Medicare trust fund by 12 years.

Social Security law requires program spending to match revenue, so a lack of action by lawmakers by that time will mean benefits will have to be cut 23 percent -- or the Social Security payroll tax increased to 16 percent, or a combination, the report said. Congress has never allowed the program’s two trust funds to be depleted.

Medicare, to stay solvent for the next 75 years, would have to immediately raise payroll taxes by 24 percent, or cut current benefit payments by 17 percent, Cori Uccello, a senior health fellow with the American Academy of Actuaries in Washington, said in a phone interview.

You know what?

IF we ever "run out of money" to fund social security, we won't be sending billions and billions of dollars all over the world, because people will make sure the buck stops there.

If we actually do become "broke" every country we assist, support, fund and find money to send to, will have to go broke with us.

Ya know, something about all this makes me think Medicare will be our NHS. Its a built in system, would take just an increase in taxes, would eliminate some of the overhead from having to file so many different forms for different companies.....

Just a thought.

Let's be frank. This mess was created by Franklin D. Roosevelt et al; then made worse by politicians of both parties who believed doing so would get them reelected. SS and it's spinoffs are nothing but a Ponzi scheme to the degree to make "Bernie" Madoff look like a rank amateur. One of the corrective actions that passed sometime back was to increase the age before some folks can collect full benefits denying those who planned to wait the benefits of doing so. The dummies in Washington failed to correlate the beginning of medicare to that modification. The result is you must begin funding medicare part B out of pocket until you can collect full SS or pay a stiff penality for delaying the start of premium payments.

At this point, the ponzi scheme AKA SS is starting to unravel as the influx funds exceed the outgo.
Needed changes that I do support may pass congress in my lifetime, but the current thinking in DC would exempt me because I am over 55 years of age.

Ya know what? Im sick of this complaint. Ponzi scheme... thats all I ever hear. But, as a "scheme" its damn lucrative as hell... or was until our politicians slid their fingers into that pie and drained it dry.

At the end of 2002, the Social Security trust fund had a balance of $1.22 trillion. During 2003, the Treasury received $544 billion in Social Security taxes and paid out $406 billion in Social Security benefits. Therefore, the trust fund received $138 billion in these special-issue Treasury bonds, resulting in a trust fund balance of $1.36 trillion at the end of 2003.

If the government would keep their hands out of the SS cookie jar.... But, as we all know, they cant leave a single penny unspent.
