Funny cause I remember that being proof that Bush was owned by the oil companies.  You also have to remember that it was only up there for a few days.  Until this time
I never paid over $4 a gallon ( had a stroke that week and wasn't able to drive for several days.

Who are you posting too and what does my stats have to do with the discussion?

But, as far as prices...

After nearing the all-time record, gas prices in the United States are sliding downward, with another drop possible in the next few days, according to a survey published Sunday.

The Lundberg Survey found the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline nationwide was $3.91 as of Friday, publisher Trilby Lundberg said. The price represents a drop of just over 9 cents from May 6, when prices hit the $4 mark.

The all-time high for U.S. gas prices was $4.11 on July 11, 2008, she said.

Corn feeds a hell of a lot of the worlds poor

A significant portion of the worlds rice crop is being diverted into ethanol production as well

Corn used for food and for feed + for ethanol  increased demand  =  increased cost use of ethanol can not help but raise the price of corn.

rulemylife -> RE: Gasoline prices drop in California, nationwide (5/24/2011 11:07:19 AM)

It seems we are overlooking some significant events impacting food prices.

The southern states were hit with several hard freezes during the winter that destroyed a lot of crops.

I apologize

You wrote

"The single most signigicant thing that has effected food prices in the past few years has been the price of corn"

I read

"The single most signigicant thing that has effected GAS prices in the past few years has been the price of corn"

Massive migraine and I have been taking fioricet with codeine.

Apparently codeine and posting don't mix.  [8|]

And just how much rice is that, or, approximately what proportion of the world's rice are we talking here?

You got something to back that up?

How about just the name of one producer of Ethanol using rice.

mnottertail -> RE: Gasoline prices drop in California, nationwide (5/24/2011 11:25:53 AM)

Suzuki?  Ain't that why they call them ricegrinders?

flcouple2009 -> RE: Gasoline prices drop in California, nationwide (5/24/2011 11:34:04 AM)

lol,  Ron could we just make the gas tank a rice cooker?  When it dings your ready to drive.

They are not using rice for ethanol production.  The work there is in using the rice straw for ethanol production.

No, it doesn't.

Wheat, rice, potatoes, yes.

Rice ethanol is in fact in its beginning stages. Amazing how at this beginning stage, already a "significant portion is being diverted" to the cause already, no? Just wait till they get to 1,000 gallons produced; world starvation, count on it ...

OK, silly time is over now.

The rice of choice in this venture is a non-edible so-called 'super-harvest' rice . It is starting to be grown in Japan where rice consumption has gradually diminished to the point where more and more former rice fields lie fallow.

http://inventorspot.com/articles/rice_ethanol_replaces_oil_saves__10099

"The problem is, Japanese as a whole are eating less and less rice each year and many rice farmers are abandoning their fields."

http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news2.22a.html

" ... the project aims to use non-food rice planted in abandoned farmlands. A fall in domestic consumption of rice every year results in the Japanese government's plan to reduce planting for food rice by some 100,000 ha in 2008 from 2007.

Aside from that, it's not necessary to use the grain itself at all. Numerous technologies are coming online that use husks, hulls, stalks, and other waste biomass.

The reason for using corn is because the beneficiaries like it that way.

Aside from Monsanto, guess who is getting the tax dollars here?  - hint: it wasn't Greenpeace screaming for this one -

http://www.ewg.org/press/Will-the-Real-Ethanol-Beneficiaries-Please-Stand-Up

"Designed to make the fuel more cost competitive, the tax credit pays refiners, including BP, Shell and Exxon, 45 cents a gallon to blend ethanol with gasoline. Oil and gas companies get this tax subsidy regardless of the price of ethanol or how large their profits are."

What a surprise ...

Right.

The price of gas has only "dropped" about 8 cents a gallon, in my area, so excuse me for not doing a jig just yet.

I am still not convinced that it won't rise over the summer.

Now, if/when it goes down at least $1 a gallon, that will make more of a difference, to me.

I am wondering if I will ever see $2-$3 a gallon gas again!

For some reason, I think the NEW low price will settle around $3.50 a gallon and people will just be glad it's not $4 a gallon.

thats what was the common belief in 2008...just before they dropped by more than 50% to under $2.00.

Dont count on that.

I was under the impression it was commodities gambling... um er... trading, and speculating that caused the higher food prices

As usual, your impression is wrong.

Yes, it does.

Mexicans stage tortilla protest

[image]http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42520000/jpg/_42520299_protest_afp203b.jpg[/image] Mexicans are angry at the rise in price of their staple food Tens of thousands of people have marched through Mexico City in a protest against the rising price of tortillas.

The price of the flat corn bread, the main source of calories for many poor Mexicans, recently rose by over 400%.

President Felipe Calderon has said the government will clamp down on hoarding and speculation to ease the problem.

But some blame the rise on demand for corn to make environmentally-friendly biofuels in the United States.

Edwyn,

What they have been working on here is using the rice straw to make ethanol.  Finding a way to make use of the waste after the rice has been separated out.

So Mexico makes up the majority of the world?

Still waiting for you to show where the "significant potion" of the worlds rice is being diverted into ethanol.

I suspect it will be a long wait.

Lucylastic -> RE: Gasoline prices drop in California, nationwide (5/24/2011 5:42:43 PM)

Its gone down 16 cents a litre from 140 to 124
Thanks Mr President
oh nope hang on...

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Gasoline prices drop in California, nationwide (5/24/2011 5:46:32 PM)

Interesting. Since many things can be used to produce ethanol.

Does not support the claim made, but promising for the possibilities.

The House Republican leadership has a new demand for the Obama administration: Raise gas taxes in the Midwest by 30 cents a gallon. Whoops, not quite. They only insist that the Administration raise gas prices in the Midwest by 30 cents. Raising taxes is a big Republican no-no.But the oil industry knows exactly how to raise prices without a tax hike. And the GOP is supporting these industry maneuvers to make fuel more expensive. In fact, this week, House Republicans started demanding that the Obama administration rush regulatory approval of the biggest energy scam in the country -- the Keystone XL Pipeline. This country has no shortage of controversial energy projects but the Keystone XL Scamline is in a class by itself. It has been and continues to be sold as a project that will increase supplies of Canadian tar sands oil in the United States. In fact, it is designed to reduce supplies of tar sands oil to Midwest customers. That's because the Koch Brothers and others who profit from tar sands oil are tired of the fact that gasoline in Missouri costs only $3.67 a gallon, while it is $4.07 in New York and $4.09 in California.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/carl-pope/drain-baby-drain_b_866298.html

How many people could be fed with the corn, wheat, grains that goes make steaks, compared to the number of people that could be fed with the meat those animal feeds produced?

Answer, you don`t want to defend a ten to one(or higher) ratio.

How many folks could be fed with the grains, corn and fruit that is used to make booze?

Enough with the morality of corn to fuel arguments.
